seat of the scornful. 2 Pet. iii. 3. Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts.

i 1 Peter iv. 4. Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you.

k Acts xiii. 45, 46, 50. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. Acts iv. 18. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus. Acts xix. 9. But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. 1 Thess. ii. 16. Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles, that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. Heb. x. 29. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

72 Tim. iii. 5. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof; from such turn away. Mat. xxiii. 14. Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: therefore, ye shall receive the greater damnation. Mat. vi. 1, 2, 5, 16. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore, when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily, I say unto you, they have their reward. Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

m Mark viii. 38. Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

n Psal. lxxiii. 14, 15. For, all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning. If I say, I will speak thus: behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.

o 1 Cor. vi. 5, 6. I speak to your shame. Is it so that there is not a wise man amongst you? no not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? but brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Eph. v. 15, 16, 17. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because

Q. 114. What reasons are annexed to the third commandment?

A. The reasons annexed to the third commandment, in these words, [The Lord, thy God,] and [For the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain,s] are, because he is the Lord and our God, therefore, his name is not to be profaned, nor any way abused by us ;t especially because he will be so far from acquitting and sparing the transgressors of this commandment, as that he will not suffer them to escape his righteous judgment, albeit many such escape the censures and punishments of men.w

p Isa. v. 4. What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? 2 Peter i. 8, 9. For, if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren, nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things, is blind, and cannot see far off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

q Rom. ii. 23, 24. Thou that maketh thy boast of the law, through breaking the law, dishonourest thou God? For, the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles, through you, as it is written.

r Gal. iii. 1, 3. O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hatit Been evidently set forth, crucified among you? v Ezek. xxxvi. 21, 22, 23. But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went. Therefore, say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord. God, I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went. And I will sanctify my great name, which was pro faned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them, and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you, before their eyes. Deut. xxviii. 58, 59. If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD, THY GOD; then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. Zech. v. 2, 3, 4. And he said unto me, What seest thou? and I answered, I see a flying roll, the length thereof is twenty cu bits, and the breath thereof ten cubits. Then said he unto me, This. is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for

Q. 115. Which is the fourth commandment ?

A. The fourth commandment is, Remember the Sabbathday to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord, thy God in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath-day, and hallowed it.x

Q. 116. What is required in the fourth commandment?

A. The fourth commandment requireth of all men the sanctifying or keeping holy to God such set times as he hath appointed in his word, expressly one whole day in seven ; which was the seventh from the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, and the first day of the week ever since, and so to continue to the end of the world; which is the Christian Sabbath,y and in the New Testament, called the Lord's day.z

w 1 Sam. ii. 12, 17, 22, 24. Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial, they knew not the Lord. Wherefore, the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord. Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel, and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. Nay, my sons: for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the Lord's people to transgress. Compared with 1 Sam. iii. 13. For, I have told him, that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knoweth : because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

Now concerning the collection for the saints; as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there

Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For, verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one title shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Isa. lvi. 2, 4, 6, 7. Blessed is the man that doth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. For, thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my Sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant. Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant: even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

b Exod. xvi. 25 to 28. And Moses said, Eat that to-day; for to-day is a Sabbath unto the Lord: to-day ye shall not find it in the field. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? Neh. xiii. 15 to 22. In those days saw I in Judah, some treading wine-presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath-day and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the Sabbath, unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the Sabbath-day? Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel, by profaning the Sabbath. And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the Sabbath and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the Sabbath-day. Thus saith the Lord, take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath-day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem.
