March 30.

SIN.

GOD of all holiness and purity, I humbly pray for a holy zeal and indignation against all sin, a fear of falling into it, and an earnest desire to be delivered from it. Enable me daily, by the Holy Spirit's assistance, to "abhor that which is evil, and cleave to that which is good." Do for me, O God, exceeding abundantly above all that I ask or think, for Christ Jesus' sake. Amen.

March 31.

SIN.

Most gracious and merciful Father, I entreat thee to hide thy face not from me, but from my sins and shortcomings. Keep me from the commission of all sin. Lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil, and the evil one. I know and feel that I am weak to contend with my spiritual foes. I come to thee, the Omnipotent One, for inward power; and I beseech thee withhold it not from thy unworthy servant, for the sake of thy dear Son. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

GRACIOUS Father, give me grace to cut off a

sin, although it be as dear to me as a right hand; and pluck out a sin, although it be as dear to me as a right eye. Enable me to keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, that I may have the mastery over my lusts, and overcome my sins, which have so often overcome me. May I take up my cross daily, and follow Christ, in sorrow and in joy, for his dear name's sake. Amen,

[blocks in formation]

GOD of all mercy, I pray that I may reckon myself to be dead unto sin, but alive unto thee, through Jesus Christ. I earnestly pray that sin may not reign in my mortal body, that I should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither may I yield my members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin, but yield myself unto God, as one who is alive from the dead, and my members as instruments of righteousness unto God. I crave acceptance to my prayers for the merits of my Redeemer. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

ALMIGHTY God, grant that I may be able, with the Holy Spirit's assistance, to mortify the deeds of the body; then shall I live. Teach me to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to "live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world." Give me grace to "abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." Make me dead to the world, and may my life be hid with Christ, in God. Help me to crucify the flesh, with its affections and lusts, for Christ Jesus' sake. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

I BESEECH thee, O Lord, to grant that my carnal nature may be crucified with Christ. Make me willing to forsake all, and follow Christ. Help me against the power of my prevailing iniquities. Preserve me from those sinful pleasures, that would rob

me of the pleasures which are at thy right hand for evermore. I trust alone for acceptance to the saving merits of my great High Priest. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

Most gracious Father, grant that I may not lead a sensual life, minding the things of the flesh, as if they were worthy of my esteem. Enable me to follow the bright example set me by my Saviour, who "pleased not himself." May I not be a selfish Christian, and seek my own profit only, but that of others, that their souls may be edified and saved. I present these, and all my prayers, in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

O LORD, my heavenly Father, I pray that I may not do anything whereby I may offend another, or cause him to stumble, and fall into sin. Let not my sinful appetites, but thy heavenly grace, take possession of my soul. Grant that I may not yield myself a miserable slave to my lusts, but show myself to be a wise and faithful follower of my Saviour; in whose all-prevailing name I offer up my petitions. Amen.

SELF-DENIAL.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast all power at thy disposal, enable me to fight not only against flesh and blood, but against those mighty foes who are too strong for me to deal with. May I go forth conquering and

to conquer, till Satan be for ever bruised beneath my feet. Accept my feeble supplications, for the sake of my Advocate, who is seated at thy right hand in glory. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

"HOLY, holy, holy, Lord, God Almighty," help me to renounce every idol, to keep my anger under subjection, to hate deceit, avoid dishonesty, and detest falsehood. Grant that I may withdraw from an ungodly connection, and give up my most easily besetting sins. I look to thee, O God, for assistance, through Christ Jesus, the eternal son of thy love. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

GOD of all power and might, enable me to give up all sinful habits, variance, strife, malice, covetousness, and worldliness. I pray for grace to avoid foolish language, and all indolence and slothfulness. May I deny myself in anything that brings discredit upon true religion, that proves a stumbling-block in another's way, in anything displeasing in thy sight, that hinders my public and private prayers, and prevents my benefiting by the reading of thy holy word. Hear me for Christ Jesus' sake. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

Most gracious Lord, if I am engaged in any unlawful calling, grant me grace and courage to give

it up. May I deny my will, affections, appetites, and desires. Help me to mortify my flesh and subdue it to the spirit. Give me wisdom never to give way to momentary gratification for future discomfort. I offer up my imperfect petitions in the name of my Redeemer. Amen.

April 11.

SELF-DENIAL.

HEAVENLY Father, grant that I may endure, if necessary, present loss for future gain. May I sow and toil now that I may reap a glorious, abundant, and eternal harvest hereafter. Give me faith to believe that I shall be amply rewarded for every act of self-denial; that I shall receive a hundred-fold more in this world, and in the world to come everlasting life; that thou wilt provide for me new comforts, new pleasures, and new friends, in the place of those I give up; and wilt grant me "durable riches and righteousness," for my Saviour's sake. Amen.

April 12.

SELF-DENIAL.

MERCIFUL Jehovah, make me dead to the world, and alive to thee. Grant that I may endure hardness as a good soldier of the cross of Christ. Never may I crucify the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Let me be crucified to the world, and the world crucified to me. I ask every blessing for the sake of him who died, and rose again; Christ Jesus, my Lord. Amen.
