Excessively rare, especially the second and third volumes of the Reliquia.
It is supposed that no province of the Roman Empire contained a greater number
of richly decorated Roman villas than did England, so much at least may be inferred
from the splendid vestiges of Roman edifices and pavements. This work was the result
of twenty years' elaborate research. The plates exhibit most interesting and curious
examples of art and magnificence.

64 MACCULLOCH (John). Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland. 4 vols.,
8vo., calf gilt, with the Arms of the Hon. Geo. Agar Ellis on sides 1824
Containing descriptions of their scenery and antiquities, with an account of the
political history and ancient manners, and of the origin, language, agriculture, and
condition of the people, etc. These descriptions were founded on a series of letters
addressed to Sir Walter Scott in 1811 and 1821.

The eight volumes are common enough, but the two volumes of additions are extremely rare. The two added volumes contain: A Tour through the Isle of Thanet, 1793-Monuments and Painted Glass of upwards of 100 Churches in Kent by P. Parsons, 1794-Nelson (J.), History of St. Mary Islington, 1811-Gough (R.), On the Beauchamp Chapel, Warwick, and the Bedford Missal, 1794-1809-West (T.), Antiquities of Furness, 1774; and Martin's History of Thetford, 1779. Owing to the difficulty of collating, the set is sold not subject to return; but it is believed to be quite perfect. The stock of the two rare supplementary vols. (vols. IX-X) was partly destroyed by fire, hence their scarcity.

written in a contemporary hand, "a Delineation of ye Roman Highwaies in
Britain, according to Mr. Camden's interpretation of Antoninus his Itinerarie."

Christopher Saxton, an engraver during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, lived at
Tingley near Leeds, Yorkshire, and was servant to Thomas Sekeford, Esq., Master of
Requests, and of the Court of Wards. By the encouragement and at the expense of
this gentleman, Saxton undertook and published in 1579, a complete set of maps of the
counties of England and Wales, dedicated to the Queen, and adorned with the Royal
Arms, and those of the promoter, Master Sekeford; the dates on the plates varying
from 1573 to 1579. Saxton is commended by Camden and Thoresby, the latter of
whom calls his map of Yorkshire the best that ever was made of that county.

UNIQUE. One of the finest and most splendid volumes of heraldic Blazonry ever produced in this country.

Sir Beville Skelton was Lieutenant of the Tower towards the end of Charles II's reign. He has added some scraps of information here and there down to 1683.

A CATALOGUE of the NOBILITY of ENGLAND, With their Armes, Wiues and Issue . . 1694. Large folio, ORIGINAL MS. ON VELLUM, with 173 SPLENDIDLY ILLUMINATED ESCUTCHEONS, and five full-length page-size figures (portraits?) of a Duke, a Marquis, an Earl, a Viscount, and a Baron, in their magnificent robes of state; in the contemporary English red morocco, with the author's arms on the sides

1687-95 30 0 0

UNIQUE. A superbly emblazoned Peerage of the time, evidently begun before the death of Charles II, and continued down to 1695. Skelton was a loyal follower of James II, and adds, between the King of Poland and the first English Duke, an article to the new-born Pretender James Prince of Wales. The various members of the nobility who were true to the King are treated with praise, but the opposite method is followed in dealing with those who chose the side of the "Prince of Orange," or "The Usurper," as William III is termed even down to 1695.-At the end there are three pages of Extinct Nobility, and a Catalogue of Scottish Nobility 1691.
