HORE. Officium B.V.M. etc. Small 4to. A VERY FINE ILLUMINATED MS. ON VELLUM, 155 leaves, 15 lines to the page; with 15 MINIATURES and as many floral borders; in an old gilt calf binding Rouen, About 1440 63 0 0 A work of great delicacy and beauty, but some of the pictures a little rubbed. The miniatures are-1 the Annunciation, an interior; 2 the Visitation, on a chequered ground; 3 St George and the Dragon, landscape ground; 4 three female saints over a dying dragon; 5 St. Barbara, on a chequered ground; 6 the Crucifixion, many figures, landscape ground; 7 the Nativity, interior of the stable; 8 Warning of the Shepherds, landscape ground; 9 Adoration of the Magi; 10 Presentation in the Temple; 11 Flight to Egypt, landscape ground; 12 Coronation of the Virgin, background of camaien angels; 13 David worshipping, landscape ground; 14 Office of the Dead; 15 Virgin and Child with angels. The Rouen origin of the book is evident. The calendar contains Andoenus, Romanus, and Evodius, all Archbishops of Rouen, besides the Translation of the Relics of Rouen Church on 3 December. In the Litany Andoenus and Romanus are invoked. There is an escutcheon on the last page of the Calendar: three fleurs-de-lis argent on sable, a passant lion sable on argent in chief. This bearing is of undoubtedly English creation, and may serve to indicate the first owner. IX. GREEK AND LATIN I. Ancient Greek and Latin Writers 220 ÆLIANUS, Editio Princeps.
