Richard Hakluyt gave Erondelle his original in three books; so that it remains uncertain whether the suppression of Lescarbot's name was due to the English clergyman or the French Huguenot. Erondelle calls himself a stranger, but his English is perfect. The work is translated from Books 4, 5, 6 of the French text.

This is the actual first edition of the account of the famous Voyage which was the first Circumnavigation of the Globe. A second edition was printed two months later in Cologne, and was dated in old fashion January 1523 (meaning January, 1523-4). Many people erroneously suppose that it was the first, taking "January 1523" to be actually of the year 1523; but the Pope's prohibition of any pirated reprints of this, or any other first edition printed by Calvus, ought to be sufficient to prove that here was the first publication of Magellan's Voyage.

COLLATION: A eight leaves; B six; A, B in eights; C-G in fours; H-K in eights; L, six leaves.-Chap. XI is "De America qvarta orbis parte cum aliis nouis insulis oppositis," and in it he gives the appellation America or Amerige as derived from the name of the discoverer Americus Vesputius who found that fourth part of the world in 1497.

Inserted is a woodcut map printed at Zürich in 1546, in which the figure of the New World is given. The author dedicates his work to the Bishop of Bamberg, with the date 9th Kal. of April, 1515. A second dedication is made, also from Bamberg, to Bilibald Pirkheymer by Judocus Ruchomer; in which the latter dwells upon the important addition of the American part (which they called the New World).

The dedication to James Earl of Perth and two other lords, is signed by George Scot, who says that the collection of papers was first made for his own information regarding the new colony. It is now so rare that there are probably not more than six or seven copies in existence.

COLLATION: A four leaves (of which the first leaf precedes the title and is blank except for the signature A which it bears); A—O in eights; P-U in fours = 140 leaves. The quantity of correspondence from and about New Jersey which is collected in these pages renders the book one of the highest intrinsic value as well as one of the earliest on the subject of that part of the United States.
