94 NIGHTINGALE (J. E.) THE CHURCH PLATE OF THE COUNTY OF WILTS, Diocese of Salisbury, including that part of the County now in the Diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. From returns made by J. E. Nightingale and the Rev. E. H. Goddard. Royal 8vo., 22 plates, and 33 woodcut illustrations; cloth Salisbury, 1891

This contains descriptions of the Church's silver vessels now in existence in 360 parishes of the County of Wilts. This was the labour of several years. The preReformation pieces are fifteen in number, mostly from the vicinity of Salisbury. One of them is of thirteenth-century work.

"It is much to be desired that all writers and compilers of books on ecclesiastical and ecclesiological matters should be induced to go about their work as systematically as Mr. Nightingale."-Saturday Review, May 17th, 1890.

In the Merry Wives of Windsor (Act IV) there are references to the visit of a Duke of Jarmany, to three cousins German or Garmumbles, and the requisitioning of horses by Germans at inns. Garmumbles is evidently Mümpelgart, and the value of the allusions lies in the circumstance that they fix the date of the play as very soon after the Duke's visit to Queen Elizabeth in 1592. His account of the country is a curious and interesting one, and he was the first Duke of Teck known in England. 123 SHIRLEY (Henry) the Martyred Souldier: As it was sundry times. Acted.
