It is agreed that the Delaware chiefs, Kelefor certain lamand or lieutenant-colonel Henry, Hengue Pufhees or the Big Cat, Wicocalind or Captain White Eyes, who took up the hatchet for the United States, and their families, shall be received into the Delaware nation, in the fame fituation and rank as before the war, and enjoy their due portions of the lands given to the Wiandot and Delaware nations in this treaty, as fully as if they had not taken part with America, or as any other perfon or perfons in the faid nations.

TREATY of AMITY and COMMERCE, between his Majesty the King of Pruffia and the United States of America.

IS Majefty the King of Pruffia, and the United States of America, defiring to fix, in a permanent and equitable manner, the rules to be obferved in the intercourse and commerce they defire to establish between their refpective countries; His Majefty and the United States have judged that the faid end cannot be better obtained than by taking the most perfect equality and reciprocity for the bafis of their agreement. ¡

With this view, His Majefty the King of Pruffia has nominated and conftituted as his Plenipotentiary, the Baron Frederick William de Thulemeier, his Privy Counsellor of Embaffy, and Envoy Extraordinary with their High Mightineffes the States General of the United Netherlands; and the United States have, on their part, given full powers to John Adams, Efquire, late one of their Ministers Plenipotentiary for negociating a peace, heretofore a Delegate in Congress from the state of Maffachusetts, and Chief Juftice of the fame, and now Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States with His Britannic Majefty; Doctor Benjamin Franklin, late Minifter Plenipotentiary at the court of Verfailles, and another of their Minifters Plenipotentiary for negociating a peace; and Thomas Jefferfon, heretofore a Delegate in Congrefs from the ftate of Virginia, and Governor of the faid ftate, and now Minifter Plenipotentiary of the United States at the court of His Moft Chriftian Majefty, which

Etats Unis de l'Amerique, défirant de fixer d'une manière permanente et équitable les régles qui doivent être obfervées relativement à la correfpondance et au commerce à établir entre les Etats refpectifs des deux parties; fa Majefté et les Etats Unis ont cru ne pouvoir mieux remplir ce but, qu'en pofant pour base de leurs engagemens la plus parfaite égalité et reciprocité.

Dans cette vue fa Majefté le Roi de Pruffe a nommé et conftitué pour fon Plénipotentiaire le Baron Frédéric Guillaume de Thulemeier, fon Confeiller Privé d'Ambaffade et Envoyé Extraordinaire auprès de leurs Hautes Puiffances les Etats Généraux des Provinces Unies; et les Etats Unis ont de leur côté pourvu de leurs pleinpouvoirs le Sieur John Adams ci-devant l'un de leurs Miniftres Plénipotentiaires pour traiter de la paix, Delegué au Congrès de la part de l'état de Maffachusetts et Chef de Juftice du dit état, actuellement Miniftre Plenipotentiaire des Etats Unis près fa Majefté le Roi de la Grand Brétagne, le Docteur Benjamin Franklin en dernier lieu leur Miniftre Plénipotentiaire à la cour de fa Majefté trés Chrêtienne et auffi l'un de leurs Miniftres Plénipotentiaires pour traiter de la paix; et le Sieur Thomas Jefferfon, ci-devant délegué au Congrès de la part de l'état de Virginie et gouverneur du dit état, actuellement Miniftre Plenipotentiaire à la cour de fa Majefté

refpective Plenipotentiaries, after having exchanged their full powers, and on mature deliberation, have concluded, fettled and figned the following articles.

ARTICLE I.

There shall be a firm, inviolable and univerfriendship fal peace and fincere friendship between His Majefty the King of Prussia, his heirs, fucceffors and subjects, on the one part, and the United States of America, and their citizens, on the other, without exception of persons or places.

ARTICLE II.

The fubjects of His Majefty the King of Pruffia may frequent all the coasts and countries of the United States of America, and refide and trade there in all forts of produce, manufactures and merchandize; and fhall pay the most fa- within the faid United States no other or greater duties, charges or fees whatsoever, than the most favoured nations are or fhall be obliged to pay; and they fhall enjoy all the rights, privileges and exemptions in navigation and commerce, which the most favoured nation does or fhall enjoy; fubmitting themselves nevertheless to the laws and ufages there establifhed, and to which are fubmitted the citizens of the United States, and the citizens and fubjects of the most favoured nations.
