Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men,' him shall the Son of man confess before the angels of God:

But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

NOTES.

1 To confess Jesus Christ before men is to acknowledge our belief in him: to deny him is to be ashamed of our belief, and try to conceal it.

2 The Son of man is Jesus Christ. The

angels of God will attend him, when he shall return to judge the world.

LESSON XX.

QUESTIONS.

MEN can kill our body: Can they do anything more to hurt us?

Who can kill us, and then cast us into hell? How did Jesus Christ teach men that they are always under God's protection? How did Jesus Christ encourage men to own that they believed in him?

What did he say of those who denied him? Who is the Son of man?

When will the Son of man confess or deny men before the angels of God?

LESSON XXI.

From the 12th Chapter of Saint Luke.

And Jesus said unto them, Beware of covetousness.

NOTE.

1 One brother complained of another that he refused to give him his proper share of their inheritance, or the property they inherited. Jesus Christ took this opportunity of shewing the danger of covetousness.

certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

NOTE.

There was no harm in the rich man building larger barns to hold his fruits and goods. The harm was in his thinking of nothing but a long life, and much pleasure: while he was not sure of living even a single day, and ought to have thought how he could make the best use of his

riches, instead of keeping them all to himself.

And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much good laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.

NOTE.

? When men die they must leave all their riches behind them: but good men will be made happy for ever. Eternal happiness is the true riches, which all men ought to seek. They who do seek it are said in the Bible to be Rich towards God. Rich in good works.
