LESSON XVIII.

From the 6th Chapter of Saint Matthew.

WHEN ye pray, use not vain repetitions,' as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Be not ye therefore like unto them for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him.

NOTES.

1 Vain repetitions are the repeating the same thing over and over again.

2 The Heathen are those who do not worship the one true God.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father, which art in heaven, &c.

NOTES ON THE LORD'S PRAYER.

Jesus Christ might have said Our King, or Our Master, which art in heaven: but he said, Our Father, to shew that God loves and protects mankind as a father does his children.

To hallow is to honor, and consider sacred. Hallowed be thy name, means, May thy name, O God, be honored and considered sacred by all men !

It was said in the twelfth Lesson that the

Kingdom of Heaven means the Kingdom of Jesus Christ: that Christians are Jesus Christ's subjects, and he is their King. In the words, Thy kingdom come, we pray for the increase and prosperity of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ on earth, and for its

final establishment in heaven, which will take place at the end of the world. Remember that when you say, Forgive us

our trespasses, it follows, as we forgive them that trespass against us: you must therefore forgive others, or God will not forgive you.

Temptation means anything which is likely to make us do wrong.

LESSON XVIII. QUESTIONS.

DID Jesus Christ command men to make long prayers, or short ones?

Who are the Heathen?

Does God know what is good for us, before we ask him?

Who taught men to say the Lord's Prayer? What do we learn from the words, Our

Father, in the Lord's Prayer?

What is the meaning of to hallow? What is the meaning of Hallowed be thy name?

What is the Kingdom of Heaven?

Are all men now Christians?

Is the Kingdom of Jesus Christ therefore established all over the earth?

When will it be established in Heaven? What is the meaning of, Thy Kingdom come? What is temptation?

LESSON XIX.

From the 18th Chapter of Saint Matthew's Gospel.

THEN came Peter1 unto Jesus, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?

Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times but, Until seventy times seven.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king

NOTES.

1 Peter was one of the twelve Apostles. 2 My brother does not mean the relation, called a brother; but any man. In this sense all men are brothers.
