This program consists of preparation and display of exhibits at the major East European Trade Fairs, and exhibits developed primarily for showing in the Soviet Union under the Cultural Exchange Agreement. These are also shown under solo arrangements in East European countries. Wherever possible, exhibits, or portions thereof, prepared for the East-West Cultural Exchange program are being utilized in the International Trade Fair program. Exhibits prepared originally for International Fairs are being designed to permit use either in whole or in part at other fairs and for showings in the U.S.S.R. and other East European countries, thus effecting economies in research and fabrication.

The Eighth Series Cultural Exchange traveling exhibit is composed of two exhibits: "Technology for the American Home-USA" which began its six showings in February 1975 and will be completed in March 1976, and "Photography-USA" scheduled for three showings between July and December 1976. The Ninth Series Cultural Exchange Exhibit also encompasses two exhibits: three additional showings of "Photography-USA" between January and June 1977 and "Food-USA" planned for six showings between January and December 1978.

A program of exhibits on American art and the American scene is also included in this budget. The art exhibits are acquired on loan from U.S. institutions, museums, and private companies. They are shown in Eastern Europe at American Embassies and in host country museums. U.S. funding for the most part is limited to costs for packing, transportation and insurance.

SPECIAL INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS

A number of special exhibits are being developed and shown overseas to celebrate America's Bicentennial. In 1976,
the principal Bicentennial exhibitions are "Reflections: Images of America"; "America-The Land, the People, the
Idea"; "200 Years of American Art"; and "Contemporary American Art". These exhibits will be shown eight times.

The 1977 request of $4,572,000, together with available balances, provides funds for the last three showings in the
USSR of the "Photography-USA" exhibit and advance funding for "Food-USA"; for eight solo showings of "Reflections:
Images of America" in Eastern Europe; for two showings of American Bicentennial exhibits; and for packing, shipping,
and insurance costs for 21 showings of exhibits on American Art and the American scene.

The 1977 estimate also requests funds for participation at five International Trade Fairs in Berlin and Eastern Europe (compared to seven in 1976). In addition, since the Department of Commerce is discontinuing the funding of participation in certain smaller trade fairs outside Eastern Europe (Commercial Presence Fairs), funds are requested for thematic centerpiece exhibits to be used in four fairs where there is a need for some U.S. presence. The Agency has in the past supported participation in some fairs of this nature under a reimbursable arrangement with the Department of Commerce.

A total of $5,750 in dollars is requested for representation in 1977. Of this amount $3,500 would be used for
exhibits under the East-West Cultural Exchange program, $800 for Bicentennial exhibits and $1,450 for International
Fairs. The total level represents no change from 1976.
