This Guide is for Naval personnel transferring to the Fleet Reserve, those about to retire and for those already retired. The information given herein concems your rights, privileges and benefits which have been granted by Congress in recognition of your loyal service to your country. You are urged to read this book with your family and acquaint them with the parts which particularly affect them such as Chapters 4, 5 and 9. The latter Chapter describes what you should do to protect them and what they should do in the event that they survive you.

This book is based on current regulations and laws and is generalized to cover the common situations. Therefore, it should not be cited as authority in specific actions. Official determinations in specific cases will be based on appropriate law or regulation.
