The author sees nothing terribly new or strange
in present economic conditions. He thinks they dif.
fer in degree, but not in kind. He recommends as
solution Christian sociology, which in its broad sense
he takes to mean a recognition of the rights of
others and obedience to existing laws, with just
punishment of each individual offender. He is not
afraid of corporations and trusts, but thinks every
individual concerned should be conscientious and do
his duty in making others so. The indifference and
laziness of individuals he arraigns with force.

The author has brought together in one connected presentation the chief results of his investigations concerning the factors of organic evolution. tions of his theory of divergence which were pub lished in the Linnean Society's Journal are reproduced in the appendix, with careful revision: but the fullest exposition of the fact that all evolution, as we now observe it, is divergent, and that other factors besides natural selection are absolutely necessary both for the origin and the continuance of this divergence, is given in the new chapters constituting the body of the volume. These chapters were written while the author was considering the most recent biological investigations bearing on the general theory of segregation. Gulick, Sidney Lewis, D.D. The present work, as its title indicates, is a supplementary volume to "The riddle of the universe." While the latter undertook to make a comprehensive survey of the general questions of science-as cosmological problems-in the light of the monistic philosophy, the present volume is confined to the realm of organic science, or the science of life. It seeks to deal connectedly with the general problems of biology, in strict accord with the monistic and mechanical principles which the author laid down in 1866 in his "General morphology."
