CIVIL AERONAUTICS AUTHORITY STATEMENTS OF CLINTON M. HESTER, ADMINISTRATOR; PAUL J. FRIZZELL, COORDINATOR AND SECRETARY; AND CHARLES I. STANTON, DIRECTOR, BUREAU OF FEDERAL AIRWAYS. Mr. WOODRUM. Mr. Hester, we have before us an item of $175,000 for the Civil Aeronautics Authority for the fiscal year 1941. you tell us about that? SAFETY RECORD OF COMMERCIAL AIR LINES Will Mr. HESTER. This is a great day in the history of civil aviation, because at 3:50 o'clock this morning the scheduled air lines of this country completed an entire year of operation without an accident involving a fatality or serious injury either to a passenger, a member of the crew, or any other person. Mr. CANNON. That is on the commercial lines? Mr. HESTER. That is right, on all the air lines of this country. For that 12-month period they carried over 3 million passengers for the first time, and they flew 87 million airplane miles and 814 million passenger miles, both of which are all-time records. Mr. CANNON. That is a magnificent record and it ought to be widely publicized, because a great many people who would otherwise take advantage of this splendid service are prevented by a fear which would be removed entirely by this record. Mr. HESTER. In 1937 the air lines carried 1,000,000 passengers; in 1938 they carried 1,300,000 passengers, and in the year ending December 31, 1939, they carried 1,800,000.
