F these Papers be of any Ufe to the Public, they cannot be unacceptable to a public Spirit. I therefore infcribe them to your Lordship. In writing them, in pubblishing them, in dedicating them, I had, I have, no View but to the Public; no perfonal Purposes, no narrow Self-intereft to ferve; unless it be accounted a felfifh Ambition to aim at standing well in the Efteem of one, whom all Men efteem; a Subject of great Rank, great Talents, with fuitable Zeal and Application. What will not fuch Parts and fuch Activity accomplish? I wish your Lordship Joy A 2

IF in fo many Occupations, and under fo much Fatigue, your Lordship has any Leifure to look into the following Sheets, you will find in them a hearty Concern for Truth and Liberty : If you please to read this fhort Addrefs, you will find in it a fincere Regard for your Lordship.

You will not therefore, I hope, be furprised to perceive your Patronage requefted, for thefe Reafons only, without your Permiffion, even without your Knowledge, to a Work compofed by one, who, not having the Honour of your Acquaintance, affumes that of publicly fubfcribing himself,
