THE

COMIC HISTORY.

now all Wen, by these
en, by these Presents,

That we, the undersigned, feeling deeply our grave misfortune in
having no just, faithful, and correct portraiture of the most thril-
ling scenes in American History, and that the efforts of Bancroft,
Prescott, and Hildreth, although well intended, are, in our hum-
ble opinion melancholy failures, do propose, and hereby promul
gate our intention to the world in general, and VANITY FAIR in
particular, to bring forth, and publicly distribute, for an appro-
priate compensation, a work which shall present those particu-
lars which we think other historians have failed to embody in
their lucubrations.

This work will bear the following title:

SCENES

FROM THE

Comic History of America,

IN VERY BLANK VERSE,

And will take a comic view of those incidents which have become of importance in the past, as

LESSONS FOR THE FUTURE.

Psychologically speaking, the world has two sides,

The Comic and the Pathetic,

and although our countrymen have become polysided in their opinions upon political economy, politics, and polygamy, they will not perhaps fail to look with interest upon one of their original divisions possessing so much and such varied interest, and heretofore so greatly neglected.

Let us, then, look from Columbus crushed with the callousness of his countrymen, to his picture painted in the pigments of pungent portraiture; from the Puritans panting under the pinchings of painful poverty, to the funny fancies of their farcical famishings; from Franklin the philosopher to Franklin the funny fellow;-an accurate accompaniment of amusing anecdote, bringing us bodily back to the curious customs of our distinguished and energetic forefathers. Follow us! gravely yet humorously interpreting Indian massacres, and the joyous release of John Smith. Kindly listen, while we minutely narrate the origin of the odoriferous pipe, with quaint Raleigh smoking; then turn to the union of vanity and wisdom in the ancient Yankee, zealous & indefatigable in the cause of his country.

Discreetly daring dangerous discussion,

And secretly seeing surly sages coldly criticising correct conviction,
We sign ourselves soberly,
B. FLAT.

BIBLIA PAUPERUM.”

(THE POOR MAN'S BIBLE.) One of the Earliest and most Curious BLOCK-BOOKS, reproduced in fac-simile from a Copy in the British Museum. By J. Pп. BERJEAU.

The Biblia Pauperum, known also by the title of Historia Veteris et Novi Testamenti, is a set of woodcuts, in which the Old and New Testament are both brought to memory by pictures, and some lines of text in Latin. This name Biblia Pauperum is derived from its use by Monks of the poorer orders, commonly called Pauperes Christi.

As a specimen of the earliest woodcuts and of printed block-books, destined to supersede the manuscripts, anterior to the valuable invention of Guttenberg, the Biblia Pauperum is well worthy the attention of the Amateur of Fine Arts as well as of the Bibliographer. It consists of forty engravings, printed on one side only of the leaves, and disposed so as to have the figures opposite each other;-the blank pages are still, or were, pasted together in most of the copies.

The engravings were printed by friction, with a substance of a brownish yellow color, instead of printing ink, which was unknown at this early period. To imitate, as near as possible, the original, the plates in this fac-simile are disposed opposite each other, and printed in a brownish color. Various Editions of this Block-book have been discovered, without any writer being able to say which is the first one. A review of them is given in the printed Introduction of the book. Besides the Rhymed Latin Poetry-of which part was given by Heinecken, and after him by Ottley-the Introduction gives, for the first time, the whole of the Text printed on both sides in the upper compartment, as well as an English Explanation of the Subjects.

ONLY 250 COPIES HAVE BEEN PRINTED, UNIFORMLY with Mr. S. Leigh Sotheby's "Principia Typographica."

In 4to., pp. 184, with 23 curious woodcuts, half morocco, Roxburgh style, $6; or in antique calf, carmine edges, $8.

"THE GAME OF THE CHESSE,"

The first Book printed in England by WILLIAM CAXTON, reproduced in fac-simile, from a copy in the British Museum, with a few Remarks on Caxton's Typographical Productions, by VINCENT FIGGINS.

Frequently as we read of the Works of Caxton and the early English Printers, and of their Black-Letter Books, very few persons ever had the opportunity of seeing any of these productions, and forming a proper estimate of the ingenuity and skill of those who first practiced the "Noble Art of Printing."

THE TYPE HAS BEEN CAREFULLY IMITATED, AND THE WOODCUTS FAC-SIMILIED BY MISS BYFIELD. The Paper and Watermarks have also been made expressly, as near as possible, like the original; and the Book is accompanied by a few remarks of a practical nature, which have been suggested during the progress of the fount, and the necessary study and comparison of Caxton's Works with those of his contemporaries in Germany, by Mr. V. FIGGINS, who spent two years' "labor of love" in cutting the matrixes for the type.

On January 10th, one vol. 8vo., 600 pages, half morocco, 75 cts.

OF

ANCIENT WINDSOR,

CONNECTICUT,

INCLUDING

EAST WINDSOR, SOUTH WINDSOR, AND ELLINGTON,
PRIOR TO 1768,.

(THE DATE OF THEIR SEPARATION FROM THE OLD TOWN,)

AND

WINDSOR, BLOOMFIELD, AND WINDSOR LOCKS,

TO THE PRESENT TIME.

BY

HENRY R. STILES, M. D.

This work is the result of a long and careful examination of everything relating to Ancient Windsor, which can be found in the State Archives; Town, Church, and Parish Records; the MS. Col lections of various Societies, Families, and Private Individuals; Newspapers, Graveyards, etc., etc.

The GENEALOGICAL portion (332 pages) comprises the genealogies of all the families within the limits of Ancient Windsor, prior to 1800. These are, as far as possible, arranged and elaborated, and in each case every item is preserved which is found upon the ancient record. Carefully prepared biographies also add to the interest of this department of the work. It thus forms an invaluable magazine of reference to the historian and genealogist.

This work forms a volume of over 900 octavo pages, well printed and strongly bound in cloth, and illustrated with two maps, portraits, autographs, and several illustrations. Price $5.

From the New York Observer.

"This splendid octavo volume is a work that must have cost immense labor, patience, and perseverance, and we are glad there are some men left who are willing to attempt such things as this. The amount of information is wonderful, curious, and valuable, and having been rescued from the stream of oblivion on which it was floating to destruction, it possesses great interest."

From the New York Independent.

"We commend Dr. Stiles's work to the inhabitants of Old Windsor, and to the widely-scattered descendants of the venerable town, as well as generally to the lovers of our early annals, and the patrons of such laborious and deserving explorers. We believe that he will be found an intelligent and faithful analyst, and the results he has reached, after years of conscientious study, are presented in a lively and pleasing style."

As a limited edition of the above valuable work has been printed, it is important that all parties desirous of obtaining should apply at once.
