In terms of acreage, 51.3 percent of the Navy United States total was California land. The next largest amount was in Nevada, which represents 22.5 percent of Navy U.S. total. About 86.4 percent of the Navy public domain acreage was in California and Nevada. The ten real property categories representing the greatest cost to Navy are shown in Table 25 and are illustrated in Chart 6. In total, they constituted 59.5 percent of the over-all Navy real property costs in the United States. The broad diversification of Navy activities in the country is illustrated by the data in Table 25. While shipbuilding is one of the Navy's leading peacetime activities and accounts for a large part of its industrial activity, the Navy has numerous other activities of importance within the industrial field, namely, ordnance plants, various test stations (underwater laboratories, torpedo, radar, electronics, ballistics, etc.), powder factories, ammunition depots, and other munitions type production facilities. Within the United States the largest Navy amount is invested in the maintenance facility category. Covered storage and production facilities are the next two largest categories in order of investment. Of the Navy real property total, 5.9 percent ($546 million) was in foreign countries as of 30 June 1960. Acreage controlled by the Navy in foreign countries as of 30 June 1960 amounted to 373 thousand. |
