(e) Lease Rentals The rental data in Table 13 indicate that rentals received, on a world-wide basis, represent 42.0 percent of the amount paid in rentals shown in Table 12. The total world-wide annual rental bill paid for properties used by the Department of Defense increased from $28 million on 30 June 1958 to $31 million on 30 June 1959. Rentals received from properties leased to others also increased from $9.0 million to $13.2 million.

(f) Acreage Controlled

The Department of Defense through the

three military departments controlled a total of 31.3 million acres of land throughout the world on 30 June 1959 (Table 14), a decrease of 1.2 million acres or 3.7 percent from that reported a year earlier. This drop, together with the 2.5 million acre reduction during the preceding year, reflects current policy of releasing those lands no longer required.

During the year, Air Force acreage holdings decreased about 987 thousand, most of which (849 thousand) was the result of release of
