DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,

Hon. WILLIAM L. DAWSON,

OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY, Washington, D.C., December 8, 1959.

Chairman, Committee on Government Operations,
House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.

DEAR MR. DAWSON: By letter of February 25, 1959, you requested this Department to furnish the House Committee on Government Operations certain data pertaining to the value of public domain lands, with the improvements thereon, which are under the control of this Department. You also requested that we again assume responsibility for reporting the estimated value of all public domain mineral resources which are under the jurisdiction of all Federal departments and agencies. Further, you requested a report on public domain acreage or properties including transfers to other departments and

agencies.

Pursuant to this request and our understanding of your requirements as expressed in our letter to you of March 10, 1959, there are enclosed:

Table I. Estimated market value of public domain lands administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, June 30, 1959.

Table II. Cost of buildings on public domain lands (administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior) as of June 30, 1959.

Table III. Cost of structures and facilities on public domain lands (administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior) as of June 30, 1959.

Table IV. Mineral resource value of the public domain (under the jurisdiction of all Federal departments and agencies) including the Outer Continental Shelf.

Table V. Changes in public domain withdrawals and restorations by Federal agencies, fiscal year 1959.

You asked that a further report be made on properties presently being carried at no value. As we indicated in our reply of March 10, 1959, to your letter of February 25, 1959, properties in this Department are listed in the GSA Annual Inventory of Owned Real Property at no value only under three conditions; namely, the land was public domain, the full market value at time of acquisition was less than $500, or else the lands were obtained for historical site purposes. Only the last category is subject to this special reporting requirement, and all of these lands are held by the National Park Service of this Department. There is enclosed also this special report, consisting of a summary sheet showing the required data for the entire United States, and then detailed sheets showing such data by States. The usage of the subject facilities is shown in block 26 of each report. All cost figures are in thousands of dollars, with the value of land shown in block 16 and the cost of buildings and structures shown in blocks 22 and 24.
