this glorious work: we ought to set the example, and lead the way, because we are looked upon as guides and leaders of the flock. What sight can be more pleasing, than to see them looking up to us with earnestness, and listening with attention to the words of our lips? can we treat those with cold indifference or neglect, who were regarded with so much tenderness and love by Christ himself when on earth? If we are actively employed in this work, we shall then be able to call to our assistance, those who would, if invited and animated by our own example, become the warmest advocates in such a glorious cause. Each child we teach has an immortal soul, capable of glorifying and enjoying God, capable of being happy or miserable forever. It is not the will of our heavenly Father that one of these little ones should perish. And whosoever shall receive one such little child in my name, saith Christ, receiveth me.

Christian friends, ye who are eminent in the church of Christ for knowledge and judgment, for zeal and love, has God bestowed upon you talents or riches; impart them to others, according to that abitity which he hath given.

For the soul to be without knowledge is not good; experience and observation has taught us, that this is true, "one sinner destroyeth much good." Exert yourselves for the instruction of the ignorant, and depend on. Christ for his blessing. While you are watering and feeding the lambs of his flock, he will water and

Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. O, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

III. As this is the last time, I will remind you of some duties which you ought to perform.

Obedience to parents-Children obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Love your brothers and sisters; be kind to them all; do all you can to assist them; teach them, and pray for them. Pay the greatest respect to the aged; take heed of mocking and despising grey hairs; thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and shalt honour the old man, saith the Lord. Remember the punishment of those children that mocked Elisha.

"When children in their wanton play,

Served old Elisha so;

And bade the prophet go his way,

'Go up thou bald head go :'

God quickly stop'd their wicked breath,

And sent two raging bears,

That tore them limb from limb to death,
With blood and groans and tears."

Read good books, but above all, read the holy scriptures read them every day: O, love the Bible, it is the best of all books; follow its directions, make it your guide in every difficul

ty, make it your companion in all your travels, never make a voyage on the water or a journey on land without that precious book, remember, that the Bible is full of truth, it is excellent in all its parts.

"Precious Book, of books the best,
Dearest gift of God but one,
That surpasses all the rest,

Gift of God's beloved Son."

Read it for instruction; it contains heavenly wisdom; the Bible will impress your minds, renew your hearts, enlighten your understandings, regulate your conduct, guide your actions, influence the choice of all your companions in life; and it will encrease your happiness here and hereafter; the more you read it, the more you will love it; it will be your support at death. O then, my dear children, do not forget to search the scriptures, for they show the way to eternal life through Jesus Christ, and bear witness that he is the only Saviour of sinners.

IV. As this is the last time, I will mention some blessings which I hope you will enjoy. The best of all blessings, is a new heart. This God will give you if you ask him; without this blessing you cannot be happy; without a new heart you cannot enter Heaven.

The next blessing, which I hope you will enjoy, is the teaching of the Holy Spirit; if you have him for your Teacher, you will be happy indeed.

nourish your souls with the rich blessings of his grace and love. Here is a noble object for your zeal, a cause in which it may be displayed in a most extensive manner. Here are plans to be formed, and means to be devised for the religious instruction of the young, the downfall of wickedness, the conversion of the soul, and the destruction of Satan's empire in the world. Behold the torrent of iniquity which runneth down your streets; stretch out your hand and preserve these young immortal souls from the rapid stream of dissipation and ruin, from that flowing tide of iniquity which is hurrying them down to the bottomless pit. Behold the streets of the city, behold the roads, fields, towns and villages around you, in which there are thousands of poor, ignorant, neglected, helpless orphans, orphans indeed they are in this respect, because they have neither father nor mother to teach them the knowledge of God or a Saviour; no man careth for their souls; they ask for the bread of life and no man breaketh it unto them; they cry for pity-shall they cry in vain? O shut not up your bowels of compassion from them; pluck these brands from the everlasting burning, and save their souls from perishing in the flames of hell.

But above all, the words are addressed to those who are parents. The future happiness or misery of your children, both in this world and in that which is to come, depends much upon you. God will require a strict account

of your stewardship, at the last day. He hath commanded you to bring up your children in his fear. Let the command of God and the worth of your children's souls, both unite to represent the extent and importance of the duty to which you are called. The work of instruction should commence as soon as the infant mind is cabable of receiving it; the mind should be daily fed with knowledge, as well as the body with food. This must be a constant work; and to precept, you must add that which is of great importance, a good example. You may teach your children their duty to God and man, but while you neglect to perform it yourselves, your labour will be in vain. Let parents remember, that with children in general, example is far beyond precept. But alas! how many families there are, that are only nurseries, for hell; and how many parents there are who only bring up their children for the devil! awful thought! that those who are the authors of their children's being, should be the authors of their eternal misery! How will you answer for this neglect? how will you bear to hear your own children accuse you at the bar of God! can you hear them reproach you as setting a bad example before them! O cruel parents; if you are careless about your own souls, do not become the destroyers of the souls of your children; if you despise a Saviour, let him embrace and bless your children; if you will not U
