Mr. STEED. The committee will be in order. The committee is i session this afternoon to take up the budget request for the Council o Economic Advisers. The 1973 appropriation was $1,369,000. Th budget request for 1974 is $1,376,000, an increase of $7,000.

We are pleased to have with us this afternoon Chairman Stein o the Council, and Mrs. Whitman.

Mr. Chairman, we welcome you to the committee and we are please to have you. We are sorry that we have had some scheduling difficul ties, but you know how it is these days with so many things to b taken care of. We do appreciate very much your patience and co operation. If you would like to identify any other people with you then we will be happy to have whatever statement you would like to make.

Mr. Stein. Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman and members o the committee.

In addition to Mrs. Whitman and myself, we have here Mr. Gary Seevers, who is the special assistant to the chairman of the Council Mr. James Ayres, who is our administrative officer; and Mrs. Nancy Skidmore, who is our budget officer.

We have a very short statement, as befits a very small budget, and I should say that we also have a scheduling problem as a result of the fact that a meeting which had previously been scheduled at the Treasury at 4:30, has been moved up to 3:30. We would hope that we might finish in time to get up there.

In any case, let me insert the biographical sketches in the record and read this brief statement.
