Q. Mr. Langston, on the 20th of December, the date on which the cablegram was sent to Mrs. Powell advising her to appear on the 29th, did you make any efforts to contact her by telephone?

A. Yes, sir; I did.
Q. Will you describe those efforts?

A. Shortly after the Western Union message was sent I even endeavored to reach Mrs. Powell by long-distance telephone. I placed the call and asked the operator, told her it was an urgent message, and to make every effort to get the message through. The report back was that there was no telephone number listed. There was no way that a message could be sent to Mrs. Powell, or contact could be made with Mrs. Powell by telephone.

Q. Did there come a time, Mr. Langston, when you received a communication from any attorneys representing Mrs. Powell?

A. Yes, sir. There was a communication received from two attorneys who represented Mrs. Powell. The message was dated December 27 and received on December 28.

Q. Will you read the telegram, please?

A. The message is addressed to Congressman Wayne Hays, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.

Through the press we have heard of the hearings set for December 29, but we have no other information. Kindly clarify and please reply to our offices at First National City Bank Building, Seventh Floor, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

Q. Will you spell that word?

A. H-a-t-o R-e-y. It is signed "Reinaldo Paniagua Diez and Gonzalo Diago Betancourt.”

Mr. TAYLER. Mark the letter "Langston No. 12," the letter from Mrs. Powell on December 19, and mark the cablegram from her attorneys "No. 13."

A. Yes, sir. There was a second telegram received that day.

A. The message is dated December 28, 4:33 p.m. It is addressed to Congressman Wayne Hays, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.

No answer received to my telegram of yesterday's date at 3:40 p.m. U.S. Marshal from San Juan informed me one ticket available for Mrs. Powell at 6:35 p.m. today, Eastern flight. Impossible to make arrangements for child and other necessary things to travel. Request you wire direct future date to appear, stop, Mrs. Powell willing to cooperate.

^. It was made through Eastern Airlines. We had some trouble getting a reservation on Eastern but Eastern Airlines reservation desk arranged for the ticket and the flight on Pan American Airline.

Q. Did there come a time on the 28th when you prepared and sent a cablegram to Mrs. Powell's attorneys replying to the ones you have already read that you received from them?

A. Yes, sir. There is a cablegram in response to those messages.

By Mr. TAYLER: Q. Mr. Langston, did you make any further contact with the U.S. marshal on the 28th or 29th relative to locating Mrs. Powell and notifying her to appear on the 30th?

A. Yes, sir, I did.” On December 28, I again telephoned the marshal to request that he renew or continue his efforts to locate Mrs. Powell and to advise her that two tickets were available and I gave him the flight information to pass on to her.

A. At that time he reiterated that he had been unable to locate Mrs. Powell.

Q. Have you heard anything further from the marshal regarding that matter?

A. No, sir; I have not.
