born in Egypt: all the persons of Jacob's family, that came to Egypt, were seventy.

28. And he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to direct him to Goshen, whither they came. 29. Then Joseph prepared his chariot, and went to meet Israel his father, at Goshen; and when he presented himself to him, he fell on his neck, and wept on it long. 30. Then Israel said to Joseph, I would now die satisfied, since I have seen thee alive.

31. Then Joseph said to his brethren and his father's family, I will go and intimate to Pharaoh, that my brethren and my father's house, which were in Canaan, are come to me; 32. And that the men are shepherds, for their business hath been to feed cattle; and that they have brought their flocks, herds, and all that they have. 23. And when Pharaoh shall ask you what is your occupation? 34. Ye shall say, Thy servants have been occupied about cattle from our youth, like our fathers, that ye may dwell in Goshen, for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.

CHAP. XLVII.

JOSEPH SHEWS PHARAOH HIS BROTHERS.

THEN Joseph came and told Pharaoh, saying, My father and my brethren, and their sheep, and oxen, and all that they have, are come from Canaan, and are in Goshen. 2. And he took five of his brethren, and presented them to Pharaoh.

3. Then Pharaoh said to them, What is your occupation? And they replied, Thy servants are shepherds, like our fathers. 4. Moreover they said to Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come, as thy servants have no pasture for their flocks, in Canaan, the famine is so grievous; therefore we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in Goshen.

5. Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, As thy father

and thy brethren are come to thee, 6. And the land of Egypt is before thee, in the best of the land let them dwell, even in Goshen; and if thou knowest any of ability among them, make these rulers over my cattle.

7. Then Joseph introduced his father to Pharaoh, and he blessed Pharaoh. 8. Then Pharaoh said to Jacob, How old art thou? 9. And he replied, The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty. 10. Few and evil have the years of my life been; I have not attained to the age of my fathers in their pilgrimage. So he blessed him, and left him.

11. Then Joseph gave his father and brethren a possession in the land of Rameses, the best of Egypt, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12. He also nourished them, and all that household, with bread, with all their numbers.

13. Now there was a great scarcity of bread in all the land, for the famine was very grievous in Egypt and in Canaan, so they were sore distressed. 14. And Joseph amassed all the money of Egypt and in Canaan for the corn they bought; and he brought it into Pharaoh's house.

15. ¶ But when money failed in Egypt, and in Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, Give us bread; for why should we die in thy presence for want of money? 16. But Joseph said, Give your cattle, if you have no money. 17. So they brought them to him; and he gave them corn in exchange for every kind of cattle, as horses, sheep, herds, and asses. So he fed them for all their cattle that year.

18. When it was ended, they came the second year, and said, We will not conceal from my lord that our money is spent; my lord hath also our cattle, and we have nothing left but our bodies and our lands, 19. Why should we die before thee, and our land lie desolate? bu, us and our land for

bread, and with it we will be subject to Pharaoh, and give us corn, that we may live, and sow our land.

20. Thus Joseph acquired all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man delivered his field, because the famine prevailed.

21. So he removed the people to cities from one end of Egypt to the other: 22. Only the land of the priests he bought not, as they had a portion given them by Pharaoh to eat; they sold not their lands.

23. Then Joseph said to the people, I have this day purchased you and your land for Pharaoh, here is seed for you, sow the land: 24. And ye shall give the fifth part of the increase to Pharaoh, and the rest shall be for seed and for food to you and your families. 25. Then they replied, Thou hast saved our lives; let us obtain the continuance of my lord's favour, and we will be Pharaoh's ser

vants.

26. So Joseph established it for a law over Egypt, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except of the priests land, which being held sacred, none of it became Pharaoh's.

27. Now the Israelites dwelt in Egypt, having their possessions in Goshen, and they encreased and multiplied exceedingly. 28. Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years; and his whole age was one hundred and forty-seven years.

29. The time of his death was now at hand. So he called his son Joseph, and said to him, If I have now obtained thy favour, certify me in the manner of our fathers, kindly and truly, that thou wilt not bury me in Egypt: 30. But carry me out of Egypt, that I may rest with my fathers. Bury me in their burying place. Then he said, I will do as thou hast said. 31. So he said, Swear to me; and he sware to him. Then Israel worshipped on his bed..

CHAP. XLVIII.

JACOB IS SICK UNTO DEATH.

AFTER Some time Joseph was informed that his father was sick: So he went to see him; and took with him his two sons, Manessah and Ephraim.

2. Now, Israel was told that Joseph was coming. Then he revived with joy, and sat on the bed. 3. And said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in Canaan, and blessed me; 4. And said, I will greatly multiply thy seed, and they shall possess this land for a perpetual possession. 5. Now the two sons which thou hadst in Egypt before I came into it, I adopt as fellow-heirs with Reuben and Simeon; 6. And tho' the children which thou shalt have after this shall be thine, they shall share of their brothers inheritance, and denominations, all being Ephramites and Manassites. 7. When I came from Syria, thy mother died by the way, not far from Ephratah, now Bethlehem, in Canaan, and I buried her there.

8. Then he beheld Joseph's sons, and enquired concerning them. 9. And Joseph said, They are the sons whom God hath given me in this place, Then Israel said, Bring them to me, I pray thee, that I may bless them.

10. His eyes were now dim with age. So Joseph brought his sons near him, and he saluted, and embraced them: 11. And said to Joseph, I had no thoughts of ever seeing thee, and yet God hath

shewn me thy seed.

12. Now Joseph brought them out from between his father's knees, and they bowed themselves b fore him; 13. Having the oldest in his left hand toward his father's right hand, and the youngest in his right hand toward his father's left hand. 14. Then Israel stretching his right hand laid it on Ephraim's head; and his left he laid on Manasseh's; pre

N

saging by his hands that the youngest should be the greatest.

15. Then he blessed him with his offspring, saying, May the God of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, who preserved me, and provided for me, 16. The angel of the covenant (Messiah), who redeemed me from all evil, bless the youths; let them be called by my name, and let my name be perpetuated by them, and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and may they multiply into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

17. But Joseph seeing his father lay his right hand on Ephraim's head, he endeavoured to remove it to Manasseh's, being displeased; 18. And saying, Do not so, my father; put thy right hand on the head of the oldest. 19. But his father refused, saying, I know it very well, my son; he also shall become a multitude, and be great, but his younger brother shall be greater, and the father of multitudes. 20. And thus he blessed them, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, May God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

21. Then he said to Joseph, I am dying; but God shall be with my posterity, and bring them again to the land of their fathers. 22. I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I procured from the Amorite myself.

CHAP. XLIX.

JACOB'S LAST WORDS, AND death.

Now Jacob assembled his sons, and addressed them, saying, I will tell you what will befal you in the times to come; 2. Hearken, therefore, to Israel your father.

3. Reuben, my oldest, the son of my flourishing age and vigour, having by birthright the excel
