how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold? 9. With whomsoever of thy servants it is found, let him die, and let us also be my lord's bondmen. 10. Then he said, Be it thus far,-he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

11. Then every one speedily took down his sack to the ground, and opened them. 12. And he searched from the oldest to the youngest; and found the cup in Benjamin's sack. 13. Then they rent their clothes, and laded their asses, and returned to the city.

14. When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, (for he was yet there), they fell be fore him on the ground. 15. Joseph said to them, What have ye done? Wot ye not that such a man as I can divine with certainty, and discover the matter. 16. Then Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath discovered thy servants iniquity. Behold, both we and he with whom the cup is found are thy servants. 17. But he said, God forbid that I should do so; he only with whom the cup is found shall be my servant; and let the rest of you go in peace to your father.

18. Then Judah came near to him, and said, O my lord, I pray thee, let thy servant speak a word, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant, for thou art even as Pharaoh. 19.My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or a brother? 20. We said, We have an aged father, and' a younger brother, a child of his old age, whose brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loveth him tenderly.

21. Then thou saidst to thy servants, Bring him to me that I may see him. 22. But we said to my lord, He cannot leave his father; for then he would die. 23. But thou saidst to thy servants, Except your youngest brother be with you, ye shall

not see my face. 24. So when we returned to thy servant our father, we told him my lord's words. 25. And when he said, Go again, and buy some food, 26. We replied, We cannot return except our youngest brother be with us; for we may not see the man's face without him. 27. Then thy servant my father said to us, Ye know my youngest wife had two sons, 28. And the one went out from me; and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces, and I saw him not since: 29. And if ye take this one also from me, and mischief befal him, ye shall bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to the grave. 30. Therefore, when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us, (seeing his life is bound up in the lad's), 31. He will die; and thy servant shall bring down the grey hairs of thy servant my father with sorrow to the grave; 32, For thy servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, If I bring him not to thee let me bear the blame to my father for ever. 33. Now, therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide in stead of the lad a bondman to my lord, and let the lad return with his brethren: 34. For how shall I return to my father, if the lad be not with me? lest perhaps I see evil come on my father.

CHAP. XLV.

JOSEPH OWNS HIS BROTHERS.

THEN Joseph could not refrain himself before all that were with him. So he cried, Let every man go out from me: and there was no man with him, whilst he made himself known to his brethren. 2. And he wept so loud, that the Egyptians and Pharaoh's house heard. 3. Then Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? But his brethren could not answer him, they were so much troubled at his presence. 4. Then he said to them, Come near me, I pray you. Then they

did so. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt: 5. Now, therefore, be not grieved nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither; for God sent me before you, to preserve your lives. 6. For these two years hath famine been in the land, and there are yet five years to come, in which there shall scarcely be any sowing or reaping. 7. And God sent me before you to save your lives by a great deliverance, and to preserve you a remnant on the earth. 8. Therefore, it was not you, but God, that sent me hither; and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord over all his house, and ruler over all Egypt. 9. Go speedily to my father; and say to him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me ruler over all Egypt: Come to me without delay: 10. With thy children, and thy sheep, and oxen, and all that thou hast, ye shall dwell in the land of Goshen, that you may be near me. 11. There will I nourish thee, (for there are yet five years of famine to come); lest -thou and thy household, and all thou hast, suffer want. 12. Now behold, your eyes, and my brother Benjamin's eyes, see it is my mouth which speaketh to you. 13. Thus you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen: and make haste to bring my father hither. 14. Then he fell on his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept, and Benjamin wept also on his neck. 15. Moreover, he kissed all his brethren, and wept on them, and after that they talked with him.

16. Now it was told in Pharaoh's house, that Joseph's brethren were come. And it pleased Pharaoh well and his servants.

17. Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, Say to your brethren, Lade your beasts, and return to Canaan, 18. And bring your father, and your households, to me, and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt; ye shall eat the fat of it. 19. Do now as you are commanded: take waggons out of Egypt, for

your wives and children, and bring your father hith er. 20, And regard not your stuff, for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.

21. Then Israel's sons did so; for Joseph gave them waggons, and provision for the way, as Pha raoh commanded, 22. To each of them he gave two suits of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels of silver, and five suits of raiment, 23. And to his father, he sent ten asses, laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses, laden with corn, and bread, and meat, to him, by the way. 24. Thus he dismissed his brethren, And as they departed, he said to them, See that ye fall not out by the way,

25, ¶ So they returned from Egypt to Canaan to their father; 26, And said to him, Joseph is yet a live, and he is governor of all Egypt. Then Ja cob's heart fainted, for he believed them not, 27. But they told him all that Joseph said to them. And when he saw the waggons, that Joseph had sent, to carry him, his spirit revived. 28. He said, It is e nough, that Joseph my son is yet alive; I will go and see him before I die,
