them. 18. For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was son-in-law to Shechaniah, son of Arah; and his son Johanan, married the daughter of Meshullam, son of Berechiah. 19. They also reported his good deeds before me, and utter ed my words to him, who sent letters to terrify me.

CHAP. VII.

GENEALOGICAL REGISTER.

Now the wall being built, I set up the doors; and door-keepers, and singers, and Levites, were appointed. 2. I also ordered my brother Hanani, with Hananiah the ruler of the palace, to be over Jerusalem; (for he was a faithful mán, and feared God above many); 3. Then I said to them, Let not Jerusalem's gates be opened till the sun be hot; and, while these stand by, let some shut the doors, and bar them; and appoint guards of Jerusalem's inhabitants, every one in his watch, before their own houses. 4. Now the city was large and great; but the people therein were few, and the houses were not builded.

5. Then my God put it into mine heart to gather the nobles, rulers, and people, to be reckoned by genealogy: and I found a register of them, who came up at first, wherein was written, 6. These and their race are the captives, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, carried away, who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his city; 7. The num. ber of these Israelites who came with Zerubbabel; Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Digvai, Nehum, and Baanah; were 8. The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred and seventy-two. 9. The children of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two. 10. The children of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two. 11. The children of Pahath-moab, of Jeshua's and Joab's race, two thousand eight hundred and eigh

teen. 12. The children of Elam, a thousand two hundred and fifty-four. 13. The children of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five. 14. The children of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty. 15. The children of Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight. 16. The children of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight. 17. The children of Azgad, two thousand three hundred and twenty-two, 18. The children of Adonikam, six hundred and sixty-seven. 19. The children of Bigvai, two thousand and sixty-seven. 20. The children of Adin, six hundred and fifty-five. 21 The children of Ater of Hezekiah, ninety-eight. 22. The children of Hashum, three hundred and twenty-eight. 23. The children of Bezai three hundred and twenty-four. 24. The children of Hariph, an hundred and twelve. 25. The children of Gibeon, ninety-five. 26. The men of Beth-lehem and Netophah, an hundred and eighty-eight. 27. The men of Anathoh, an hundred and twenty-eight. 28. The men of Beth-azmaveth, forty-two. 29. The men of Kirjath-jearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred and forty-three. 30. The men of Ramah and Gaba, six hundred and twenty-one. 31. The men of Michmas, an hundred and twentytwo. 32. The men of Beth-el and Ai, an hundred and twenty-three. 33. The men of the other Nebo, fifty-two. 34. The children of the other Elam, a thousand two hundred and fifty-four. 35. The children of Harim, three hundred and twenty. 36. The children of Jericho, three hundred and fortyfive. 37. The children of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred and twenty-one. 38. The children of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.

39. The priests; the children of Jedaiah, of Jeshua's house, nine hundred and seventy-three. 40. The children of Immer, a thousand and fifty-two. 41. The children of Pashur, a thousand two hundred and forty-seven. 42. The children of Harim, a thousand and seventeen.

43. The Levites; the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and of Hodevah's race, seventy-four.

44. The singers; the children of Asaph, an hun dred and forty-eight.

45. The porters; the children of Shallum, Ater, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita, and Shobai, an hundred and thirty-eight.

46. The Nethinims: the children of Ziha, Hashupha, Tabbaoth. 47. Keros, Sia, Pedan, 48. Lebanah, Hagaba, Shalmai, 49. Hanan, Giddel, Gahar, 50. Reaiah, Rezin, Nekoda, 51. Gazzam, Uzza, Phaseah, 52. All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon's servants, were three hundred and ninety-two. 61. The children of Delaiah, Tobiah, Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two.

63. And of the priests; the children of Habaiah, Koz, and Barzillai, (who married one of Barzillai the Gileadite's daughters, and was called by their name). 64. These sought their register among those reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore they were, as polluted, deprived of the priesthood. 65. And the governor told them, they should not eat of the most holy things till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

66. The whole congregation was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty. 67. Besides their men servants and maid servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five sing

ing-men and singing-women. 68. Their horses, seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules, two hundred and forty-five; 69. Their camels, four hundred and thirty-five; six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.

70. And some of the chief fathers gave liberally for the work; the governor gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests' garments. 71. Others gave twenty thousand drams of gold, two thousand and two hundred pound of silver. 72. And the rest of the people gave twenty thousand drams of gold, two thousand pound of silver, and sixty-seven priests garments. 73. So the priests, Levites, door-keepers, and singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities, where they were when the seventh month came.

CHAP. VIII.

THE MANNER OF READING THE LAW.

THEN all the people assembled as one man to the street before the water-gate, and spake to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law which the Eternal gave in command by Moses to Israel. 2. Then Ezra the priest brought it before the congregation of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month. 3. Wherein he read from the morning until mid-day; and all the people were attentive.

4. Now Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchiah, Hashum, Hashbadna, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5. Then Ezra opened the book before all the people (being above them all); at which they all stood up. 6. Then he blessed the Eternal, the great God; and all the people answered, Amen,

amen, with uplifted hands; they also bowed their heads, and worshipped the Eternal. 7. Also Je shua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Ha nan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; who stood still. 8. So they read the book of God's law distinctly, and gave the sense, causing them understand what was read.

9. And Nehemiah the governor, and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said to them all, This day is holy to the Eternal your God; mourn not nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law

10. Then he said to them, Go away, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them who have nothing, for this day is holy to our God: be not sorry, for the joy of the Eternal is your strength. 11. So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Be silent, for the day is holy; be not grieved. 12. Then all the people went away to eat and drink, and send portions, and to make great rejoicing, because they understood the words explained to them.

13. And on the second day were gathered the chief fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law. 14. Wherein they found written, that the Eternal commanded by Moses, that the Israelites should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month; 15. And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, as in Jerusalem, say. ing, Go to the mount, and fetch branches of olive and pine, and myrtle, and palm, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16. So the people went, and brought them, and made themselves booths, each on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of God's house, and in the street of the water-gate, and of the gate of Ephraim. 17. So all the congregation who returned from the captivity made
