and the house of which I said, My name shall be there. 28. Now the rest of Josiah's acts, all that he did, are written in the Chronicles of the kings of Judah.

29. In his days Pharaoh-necho, king of Egypt, came against the king of Assyria to Euphrates; and Josiah opposed him, and was slain by him at Megiddo. 30. So his servants carried him in a chariot dying to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre; and the people anointed (19) Jehoahaz his 'son, king in his stead.

31. Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and reigned three months in Jerusalem; his mother's name was' Hamutal, Jeremiah of Libnah's daughter. 32. And he did evil before the Eternal, like all that his forefathers had done. 33. And Pharaoh-necho bound him with chains at RibJah, in the land of Hamath, and carried him to Egypt, where he died; and put on the land a tribute of an hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold. 34. And made Eliakim king, instead of Josiah his father, and turned his name to (20) Jehoiakim. 35. Jehoiakim gave the silver and gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land as Pharaoh commanded; he exacted of each of the people according to his means.

36. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. 37. And he did evil before the Eternal, like all that his forefathers had done.

CHAP. XXIV.

JERUSALEM IS TAKEN.

In his days Nebuchadnezzar came up, and Jehoiakim served him three years; then he rebelled against him. 2. Now the Eternal sent bands of the Chaldees, and Syrians, and Moabites, and Ammo

nites, against Judah, to destroy it, as he spake by his servants the prophets. 3. This came upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight for all Manasseh's sins; 4. Especially for the innocent blood he shed, wherewith he filled Jerusalem, which the Eternal would not pardon.

5. Now the rest of Jehoiakim's acts, all that he did, are written in the Chronicles of the kings of Judah. 6. So he slept with his fathers; and (21) Jehoiachin his són reigned in his stead. 7. The king of Egypt came no more out of his land, for the king of Babylon took from the river of Egypt (Sichor), to the river Euphrates, all that tained to him. 8. Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months; and his mother's name was Nehushta, daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. 9. And he did evil before the Eternal, according to all that his father had done.

10. At that time Nebuchadnezzar's servants came and besieged Jerusalem. 11. He himself also came against the city. 12. Then Jehoiachin went out to him, with his mother, his servants, and his chiefs, and his officers; and he took him in the eighth year of his reign. 13. And carried thence all the treasures of the Eternal's house, and of the king's house, and cut in pieces all the vessels, of gold which Solomon made for the temple, as the Eternal had foretold. 14. And he carried away all Jerusalem's principal men, and all the valiant men, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths; none remained but the poorer sort of people of the land. 15. And he carried Jehoiachin to Babylon, with his mother, his wives, his officers, chamberlains, and the chiefs of the land; they were forcibly taken captive to Babylon. 16. All the wealthy and mighty men, even seven thousand, and a thousand smiths and craftsmen; all the brave men fit for war.

17.And he made Mattaniah, his father's brother,

king in his stead, and changed his name to (22) Zedekiah. 18. He was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Hamutal, daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 19. He did evil before the Eternal, according to all that Jehoiakim had done. 20. The Eternal was now so provoked as to cast Jerusalem and Judah from his presence, when Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

CHAP XXV.

JERUSALEM DESTROYED.

NEBUCHADNEZZAR, in the tenth day of the tenth month, in the ninth year of his reign, came with all his host to Jerusalem, and encamped against it, and raised a rampart around. 2. So the city was besieged to the eleventh year of Zedekiah. 3. When on the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.

4. Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night, by a gate which was between two walls by the king's garden; (for the Chaldees surrounded the city) and the king went the way toward the plain. 5. But the Chaldees' army pursued him, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho, where all his army were scattered. 6. And they brought him to the king of Babylon at Riblah, and gave judgement upon him. 7. And they slew his sons before his eyes, and put out his eyes, and bound him with brass fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

8. And on the seventh day of the fifth month, (being the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign), his servant Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, came to Jerusalem, 9. And burnt the temple, and the king's house, and every great house, and all the houses of Jerusalem. 10. And all the army of the Chaldees, with the captain of the guard, brake

13. And the brass pillars in the Eternal's house, with the bases, and the brasen sea, the Chaldees broke in pieces, and carried the brass to Babylon. 14. The pans, the shovels, the snuffers, the spoons, and all the brass vessels of the temple, they took away. 15. The censers also, and the sprinkling bowls, whether of gold or silver, te captain of the guard took away; 16. With the brass of the two pillars, ! the sea and the bases, and of the other utensils which Solomon made for the Eternal's house; it was without weight. 17. The two pillars height were each eighteen cubits; their capitals were brass, and three cubits high with the network, and the pomegranates around the capitals were of brass.

18. The captain of the guard took also Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three door-keepers. 19. And out of the city he took an officer, that was over the men of war,and five of the king's ministers, that were found in the city, and the principal scribe of the host, who mustered the people of the land, and sixty men of them found in the city. 20. Nebuzar-adan brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21. And slew them there in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.

22. Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, governor over the remnant left in the land. 23. Which all the captains of the armies and their men hearing, they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, son of Careah, and Seraiah, son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah, son of a Maachathite, with their men. 24. And

Gedaliah sware thus to them and their men: Fear not to serve the Chaldees; dwell in the land, and you shall be well. 25. But in the seventh month, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of the seed-royal, came with ten men, and slew Gedaliah, with the Jews and Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah. 26. Then all the people, both small and great, with the captains of the armies, went to Egypt, being afraid of the Chaldees.

27. In the thirty-seventh year of king Jehoiachin's captivity, on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month, Evil-merodash, king of Babylon, in the year he began to reign, brought Jehoiachin out of prison; 28. And spake kindly to him, and set his seat above those of the kings that were with him in Babylon; 29. And changing his prison-garments, he ate before him at his table, all his days. 30. His allowance was given him of the king, daily, all his life.
