the south side of Entappuah. 8. Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, except the border of it, which belonged to Ephraim, 9.Thence the border extended to the brook of reeds: on the south side of which the cities of Ephraim there mingled among those of Manasseh, and was bounded by the great sea. 10.Southward, it was Ephraim's, and northward, Manasseh's;' and they joined Asher on the north, and Issachar on the east, 11. Manasseh had in Issachar and Asher's confines Bethshean with its towns, and Ibleam with its towns, Dor, and the fountain of Dor, with their towns and inhabitants, Taanach and Megiddo, with her towns and inhabitants, three territories. 12. Manasseh's posterity could not expel the inhabitants of these cities, but these Canaanites would dwell therein. 13. But when the Israelites became stronger, they laid them under tribute, but did not expel them.

14. Then Joseph's posterity said to Joshua, Why hast thou given me but one lot, and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, as the Eternal hath prospered me hitherto? 15. And he answered them, If thou be a great people, go up to the woody country, in the land of the Perizzites, and of the giants, and cut it down for thyself, if mount Ephraim be too small for thee. 16. But they replied, The hill region is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the valley have chariots of iron, both those of Bethshean and its towns, and those of the valley of Jezreel.

17. Then Joshua said to Ephraim and Manasseh, Joseph's posterity, Since thou art a great people, and hast great power, thou needst not have only one lot; 18. But the mountain may be thine, for it is a wood; and thou mayst cut it down, and possess its boundaries; for thou mayst drive out the Canaanites, tho' they have iron chariots, and be strong.

3. Then Joshua said to the Israelites, How long you delay to go and possess the land which the Eternal the God of your fathers hath given you; 4. Choose three men for each tribe: and I will send them thro' to describe it, as it is to be possessed, and then shall they return to me. 5. They shall dividé it into seven parts; let Judah possess their own southern abode, and Joseph their more northern one. 6. But delineate the rest into, seven parts; and bring that to me, I will cast lots for you before the Eternal your God. 7. But the Levites have no portion among you, for the Eternal's priesthood is their portion; and Gad, and Reuben, and the half of Manasselt's tribe, have received their inheritance on the east side of Jordan, which Moses the Eterhal's servant gave thein.

3. Then the men went away: and Joshua charged them to walk thro' it, and survey it, and return to him, that he might cast lots for them before the Eternal in Shiloh. 9. So they went and described it into seven parts, in a book, and returned to Joshua and the host at Shiloh. 10. Where Joshua cast lots for them before the Eternal's tabernacle, and divid ed the land to them, according to their families. 11. And the border of Benjainin's portion, was between Judah and Benjamin's. 12. Their north border began at Jordan; it extended to the north of Jericho, and over the westward mountains, the wilderness of Beth-wen. 13. And extended from thence to the south of Luz, called Bethel, and to Ataroth-adar,

by the hill on the south side of the nether Bethho14. And the boundary was at Kirjath-baal, called Kirjath-jearim, a city of Judah.

ron,

15. This was the westmost quarter. And the south quarter was from the end of Kirjath-jearim, and to the well of Nephtoah, 16. And to the end of the mountain opposite the valley of the son of Hinom, which is the giants northward valley, and extended by the valley of Hinom, and the south side of Jebusi, to En-rogel, 17. Taking then a turn from the north, it went on to Enshemesh, and to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adumim, and to the stone of Bohan, the Reubenite, 18. And passing the south side, of the plain, 19. And to the north side of Beth-hoglah; and its extremity was the north bay of the Dead Sea, at the south end of Jordan. 20. And Jordan was the east border; this was the inheritance of Benjamin's tribe. 21. Whose cities were Jericho, Beth-hoglah, (and the valley of Kenaz produced balm), 22. And Betharabah, Zemaraim, Bethel, 23. Avim, Parah, Ophrah, 24. Chephar, Kaamonai, Ophni, and Gaba, twelve cities with their villages, 25. Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth, 26. Mizpeh, Chephirah, Mozah, 27. Rekem, Irpeel, Tarlah, 28. Zelah, Eleph, and Jebusi, called Jerusa lem, Gibeath, and Kirjath: fourteen cities with their villages. This was Benjamin's inheritance.

CHAP. XIX.

All the

10. The third lot was Zebulun's, whose border was Sarid. 11. And extended toward the Mediteranean sea, to Maralah, Dabbasheth, and the river, that is opposite to Joknean, 12. And turned back eastward, from Sarid to the border of Chizloth-tabor, and thence to Daberath, and to Japhia. 13. And thence along the east to Gittah-hepher, to Ittahkazin, and Rimmon, and reacheth to Neah. 14. Round which it went on the north-side to Aannathon; and the valley of Jiphtha-el is the boundary thereof. 15. And Kattah, Nahallal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem; twelve cities with their villages. 16.This is the inheritance of Zebulun.

17. The fourth lot was Issachar's. 18. Whose border was towards Jezreel, Chesuloth, Shunem, 19. Hapharaim, Sihon, Anaharath, 20. Rabbith, Kishon, Abez, 21. Remeth, En-gannim, En-haddah, 22. 24. The fifth lot was Asher's. 25. Their border was Helkah, Hali, Beten, Achanshaph, 26. Alammelech, Amad, and Misheal-extending to Carmel, Shihor, and Libnah, westward, 27. And goeth eastward to Bethdagon, and extended to Zebulon, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el, toward the north side of Beth-emek and Neiel, and is bounded by Cabul, northward, 28. And Hebron, Rehoh, Hammon, Kanah, even to Zidon, which was a great city. 29. And then the border turneth to Ramah and Tyre, a strong city, and to Hosah, and its boundaries are at the sea, from the coast to Achzib; 30. And Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob; twenty two cities with

their villages. 31. This is the inheritance of Asher.

32. The next lot was Naphtali's; whose border was from Helaph, and Alon, in Zaananim, and Adimi, 33. Nekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakum. 33. Jordan was the boundary, which turned back westward, to Asnoth-tabor, and proceeding to Hukkok, and reaching to Zebulun, on the south, and to Asher, on the west, and to Judah, by Jordan, westward. 35. The fenced cities are Ziddim, Zer, Hamath, 36. Rakkath, Cinnereth, Adamah, Ramalı, Hazor, 37. Kedesh, Edrei, Enhazor, 38. Iron, Migdal-el, Horem, Bethanah, and Bethshemesh; nineteen cities with their villages. 39. This was Naphtali's inheritance.

10. And the seventh lot was Dan's; 41. And the border of their inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-Shemesh, 42. Shalabin, Ajalon, Jethlah, 43. Elon, Thimnathah, Ekron, 44. Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45. Jehud, Beneberak, Gathrimmon, Mejarkon, 46. Rakkon, with the tract opposite to Joppa. (Acts ix. 36.) 47. And their limits being too small for them, some of them went and attacked Leshem, and took and possessed it, and called it Dan, after their father. 48. This is Dan's inheritance. But the Amorites still continued, until the Danites became stronger, and made them tributaries.

49. And when the Israelites had fiinshed divid ing the land for possessions to them, they gave Joshua the son of Nun a possession among them. 50. Timnath-serah, in mount Ephraim, which he asked, according to the Eternal's word, and he rebuilt the city, and dwelt in it.

51. These are the inheritances which Eleazer the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chieť fathers among the tribes of Israel, divided by lot, in Shiloh, before the Eternal, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
