6. Then Judah's posterity came to Joshua iu Gilgal; and Caleb the son of Jephuneth, or Kenez, said to him, Thou knowest what the Eternal said to Moses the man of God, concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea, 7. When Moses the Eternal's servant sent me from thence to view the land, I was forty years old, and I brought him a faithful account; 8. For I was wholly upright before the Eternal my God, though my brethren who accompani ed me made the people faint-hearted. 9. Then Moses solemnly declared, saying, The land which thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy posterity's perpetually, because thou hast been upright before the Eternal thy God. 10. Now behold the Eternal hath preserved my life, as he said, these forty-five years, even since he spake thus to Moses, of which the Israelites sojourned in the wilderness forty-years, and now I am eighty-five years old. 11. I am as strong and vigorous this day, as when Moses sent me to view the land. 12. Now therefore give me this mountain-tract whereof the Eternal spake in that day, as thou heardest that the Anakims were there, and that the cities were strong and fenced; if the Eternal be with me, I shall be able to expel them as he said.

13. So Joshua gave to Caleb Jephuneh's son, Hebron for an inheritance, and prayed for his prosperity and happiness. 14. And it remained with his posterity, because he was upright with God. 15. Hebron was formerly called the city of Arba, who was the great man among the Anakims. Now the land rested from war for a time.

MACHER Gilead's father, Manasseh's first born, Joseph's first born, had his lot with his brethren; the half of Manasseh's tribe, having received their inheritance on the east side of Jordan, with the Reubenites, and Gadites; because he was a valiant man, he had his inheritance in Gilead and Bashan. 2. "The other half received theirs in Canaan, with the other nine tribes, even Abiezer's posterity, and Heleck's, and Asriel's, -and Shechem's, and Hepher's, and Shemida's, these being Manasseh's male offspring, Joseph's son.

3. But Zelophehad, Hepher's son, Gilead's son, Machir's son, Manasseh's son, had no sons, but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noe, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4. They approached Eleazer the priest, and Joshua, and the chiefs, saying, The Eternal commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren; which accordingly was given them. 5. So there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, on the other side of Jordan. 6.
