7. Then the Eternal said to Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee before all Israel, that they may know, that as I was with Moses so will I be with thee. 8. And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark to stand still when they come to the brink of Jordan.

9. Then Joshua said to the Israelites, Come hither, and hear the words of the Eternal your God. 10 Now he said, Hereby shall ye know that the living God is among you, and that he will not fail to drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites, before you. 11. Behold the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over Jordan before you. 12. Take twelve men, one out of every tribe of Israel; 13. And as soon as the feet of the priests, that bear the ark of the Eternal, the Lord of all the earth, shall go into the waters of Jordan, they shall be devided, those above ceasing to run down, and standing as a heap.

14. And it came to pass as he had said, 15. Though Jordan overflows its banks all the time of harvest, which was at that season. 16.Then the people passed over opposite to Jericho, the waters standing as if congealed, afar up to the city of Adam, beside Zaretan, (at the lake of Tiberias, or Genesareth, or sea of Galilee); and those below ran wholly down to the lake of Sodom. 17. And the priests that bare the ark walked on dry ground across the rivver's channel, and all the people did likewise.

CHAP. IV.

STONES SET UP FOR A MEMORIAL.

WHEN all the people were quite passed over, the Eternal said to Joshua, 2. Take twelve men, one of each tribe, 3. And command them to take out of the midst of Jordan, where the priests feet stand firm, twelve stones, and carry them over, aux and

leave them in the place where you shall lodge this night.

4. Then Joshua chose twelve men, 5. And said to them, Go past before the ark of the Eternal your God, into the midst of Jordan, and take up each of you a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel, 6. That this may be a memorial for future times; and when the children shall ask their fathers what is meant by these stones,

7. They shall tell them, that these are for a perpetual memorial, that the river Jordan dried up before the ark and the Israelites, till they passed over on the dry channel.

8.So the twelve men did as the Eternal commanded by Joshua; 9. Who also set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, where the priests stood that bare the ark, and they are there still. 18. The priests stood in the midst of Jordan, till all was done which the Eternal commanded the people by Joshua to do. 11. Then the priests, in the peoples' sight, passed over after them with the ark. 12. And the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the rest, as Moses spake to them. 18. About forty thousand ready armed passed over before the ark of the Eternal, to the plains of Jericho.

14. On that day the Eternal magnified Joshua before all Israel; and they feared him as they feared Moses all the days of his life. 15.Then the Eternal said to Joshua, 16. Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony to come up out of the midst of Jordan. 17. And he did so. 18. And when they were come out of its channel to the dry land, it overflowed all its banks as before. 19. They passed over on the tenth day of the first month (our third month), and encamped in Gilgal.

20. And Joshua pitched the twelve stones, which they took up out of the midst of the river in Gil gal; 21. And he said to the Israelites, When your

posterity shall ask their fathers in future times, what these stones mean? 22. They shall say, These are a memorial that their fathers came over the channel of Jordan as on dry ground, the river being divided to let them pass over, and the waters above standing as an heap: 23. For the Eternal your God dried up the waters upon the channel of Jordan before them, till they passed over, as he did those of the Red Sea, 24. That all the people on earth might hear and know that the Eternal is almighty in power, and that ye might fear the Eternal your God for ever,

CHAP. V.

CIRCUMCISION AND THE PASSOVER RENEWED. Now when all the Amorite kings, on the west side of Jordan, and all those of the Canaanites, towards the (western) sea, heard that the Eternal had dried up the waters of Jordan before the Israelites, till they passed over, their hearts fainted because of the Israelites, and they lost all courage.

2. Then the Eternal said to Joshua, Make thee sharp flints, to circumcise at this time the uncircumcised Israelites.

3. And it was done accordingly: 4. For none that were born in the wilderness were circumcised, 5.And all the men that came out of Egypt died during forty years, in the wilderness, but Caleb and Joshua. 6. Because they obeyed not the Eternal's voice, they perished, and did not enter into the land flowing with milk and honey; 7. And these their children that entered into it were then circumcised. 8. And when they had done, they staid in the camp there till they were whole.

9. Then the Eternal said to Joshua, This day I have removed from you the reproach of Egypt, therefore the name of the place was called Gilgal (removing).

10. Now the Israelites being circumcised in Gilgal, kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first

month at even.

11. And on the morrow after the passover, they áte unleavened cakes, and the new parched ears of corn of the land; 12. After which the manna ceased.

Now when Joshua was by Jericho, he beheld a man standing opposite to him, with a drawn sword in his hand; then he went to him, and said, Art thou for us or for our adversaries? 14. But he replied, I am come as a captain of the Eternal's host: 'Then Joshua fell prostrate to the earth, worshipping him, and said, What would my Lort say to his servant? 15. Then he said to Joshua, Put off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place where thou standest is consecrated; and he did so.

CHAP. VI.

THE MIRACULOUS TAKING OF JERICHO.

Now Jericho was closely shut up, because of the Israelites; none went out nor came in.

2. Now the Eternal said to Joshua, I have given Jericho into thy power, with its king and mighty courageous men; 3. And all your men of war shall go round the city, once every day, during six days. 4. And seven priests shall blow before the ark seven trumpets of the Jubilee; and the seventh day ye shall encompass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

5. And when the trumpet sounds long (for alarm) all the people hearing it shall give a great shout, and the city wall shall fall, and every man shall go straight forward over it.

6. Then Joshua called the priests, and bade them take up the ark, and let seven priests sound seven Jubilee trumpets before it. 7. And he bade the people go round the city, with the armed men aFound the ark. 8. Then the people did as he bade

them; and the armed men did likewise. 9. And the promiscuous crowd followed the ark. 10. And Joshua commanded them neither to shout with their voice, nor speak, till he gave them orders.

14.

11. And when the priests had encompassed the city once with the ark, they went into the camp, and lodged there. 12. But Joshua rose carly, and the priests took up the Eternal's ark. 13. And seven priests, bearing seven trumpets of Jubilee, before the ark, went on, blowing them continually, the armed men going before, and the mixt multitude (of seniors, females, and children) following. Thus they went round it, and returned to the camp daily, six days. 15. And on the seventh day they rose at the dawning of the day, and went seven times round the city in the same order. 16. And the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said, Shout, for the Eternal hath given you the city; 17. And it is devoted to destruction, with all that is in it, except Rahab the hostess, with all that are in her house, because she concealed the missionaries. 18. Now take care to keep yourselves from what is devoted to destruction, because it is accursed, lest you bring a curse upon yourselves, and the camp of Israel, to trouble it. 19. But all the silver and gold, utensils of brass and iron, shall be brought into the Eternal's treasury, being devoted to him.

20. Now when the priests blew the trumpets on the seventh day, the people shouted aloud, and the wall fell, so that they went into the city, straight forward, every one; and took it; 21. And destroyed every creature in it, except Raliab the hostess, and those that were in her house; 22. Whom Joshua ordered the missionaries to bring out and save, as they promised to her. 23. And they did so; and left her with her kindred, and all that she had, at the outside of the camp. 24. And having slain every creature, they burnt the city, and all therein, except the sil
