thirst, and nakedness, aud want of all things; and he shall put a yoke of iron on thy neck, till he hath destroyed thee. 49. The Eternal shall bring a nation against thee fromafar (the Romans), even from the end of the earth, whose ensign is the eagle, a nation whose tongue thou understandest not; 50. A nation of a fierce countenance, which will not respect the old, nor pity the young; 51.Which shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and of thy land, till thou be destroyed, leaving thee neither corn, wine, nor oil: 52. Which shall besiege thee in all thy cities, until thy high and fenced walls, throughout all thy land, wherein thou trustedst, be overthrown. And thou shalt eat thy children, even the flesh of thy sons and daughters, in the siege, by reason of the straits wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee. 54. The man of a refined and very delicate taste shall be invidious towards his brother, and even his own wife, and the remainder of his children, 55. So as to grudge to give to any of them the flesh of his children whereof he eats, as there is nothing left in the siege, by reason of the straits wherewith the enemies shall distress thee in all the cities. 56. The refined and delicate woman, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground, shall grudge her husband, and her son and daughter, her own secundines, 57. And her new born babe; for she shall eat them secretly for want of all things, in the siege and distress wherewith thine enemies shall straiten thee in all thy cities, 58. If thou wilt not observe all the words of the law written in this book, thy duty to God and man, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE E

TERNAL THY GOD.

59. Then he will inflict extraordinary plagues on thee and thy seed, wonderful and great diseases, and of long continuance. 60. He will also bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt which thou fearest, and they shall cleave to thee. 61. Also, every

sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, will he bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

62. And whereas ye were a great multitude, ye shall be left few in number, because ye would not obey the voice of the Eternal your God. 63. As the Eternal's goodness rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so will his justice to punish you, by destroying you as you deserve; and ye shall be snatched away from the land which ye go to possess.

64. And the Eternal shall scatter thee, among all people, from the one end of the earth to the other, where you shall serve(pagan and popish)gods of wood and stone, which neither ye nor your fathers have known. 65. And among these nations shalt thou find no quiet nor rest for the sole of thy foot, but the Eternal shall give thee a trembling heart, with anguish of mind, and dejection of face. 66. And thy life shall hang continually in doubt; thou shalt fear day and night, having no assurance of it. 67. In the morning thou shalt say, O that it were evening; and in the evening, O that it were morning; because of the fear of thine heart, and of what thou seest with thine eyes. 68. And the Eternal shall bring thee again into Egypt, in a way that thou canst not escape, being in ships; and ye shall be sold for bond-men and bond-women, until there be no more buyers.

CHAP. XXIX.

MOSES LAST CHARGE.

THESE are the articles of the covenant now renewed; and solemnly ratified, which the Eternal commanded Moses to make with the Israelites, in the land of Moab, beside the ratification of it in Horeb at Sinai, by different persons.

2. Then Moses addressed all Israel thus: Ye

have seen all that the Eternal did before your eyes in Egypt, to Pharaoh aud all his servants, and all his land. 3. The great trials, the prodigies, and great miracles, which your eyes have seen, 4. Yet, because of your sins, you have not received from the Eternal an understanding, willing, and obedient heart, unto this day.

5. I have led you forty years in the wilderness (saith the Eternal); your clothes and your shoes have not waxen old upon you. 6. Ye have not taken wine, nor bread, that ye might know that I the Eternal am your God, (who gave you manna from heaven, and water out of the rock.)

7. When ye came to this place, Sihon king in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, came out to attack us, and we conquered them; 8. And gave their land to the Reubenites, and Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh, to possess.

9. Keep, therefore, the conditions of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.

10. Ye all this day stand before the Eternal your God, the chiefs of your tribes, your elders, and offi-: cers, with all the Israelites; 11. Your wives, and your little ones, and the stranger that is in the camp, from the hewer of wood to the drawer of water; 12. That ye should enter into covenant with the Eternal your God, in the solemn manner he maketh it with thee this day; 15 That he may establish thee this day for a people to himself, and may be thy God, as he hath said to thee, and as he hath solemnly promised to thy fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

14. Neither for you only do I make this solemn covenant, 15. But with the whole nation in being, and about to be; for your posterity's good as well as your's: 16. For ye know how we dwelt in Egypt, and how we came through the nations, by which we passed, 17. Whose abominations, and idols of wood

and stone, silver and gold, ye have seen; 18. Beware lest there should be among you man or woman, family or tribe, whose heart turneth away from the Eternal your God to the gods of the nations, as a poisonous plant, producing deadly effects. 19. And when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I add sin to sin, gratifying the lusts of my heart, 20. The Eternal will not spare him, but his jealousy and his wrath shall burn against that man; all the curses written in this book shall come uponhim. He shall be consumed from off the earth, and his name blotted out from under the heaven.

21. The Eternal shall set him apart for punishment, separating him from the communion of the assembly of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses which are written in the book of the law, for breaking the covenant. 22. So that the succeeding generations of your children, and strangers that shall come from afar, when they see the plagues of the land, and the diseases which the Eternal hath brought upon it, shall say, 23. Is the whole land burnt with brimstone and salt, that it is not sown, nor any grass groweth thereon, being as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the Eternal consumed in his wrath? 24. And all nations shall say, Why hath the Eternal done so to this land? What is the cause of this great wrath?

25. Then shall it be said, because they have forsaken the covenant of the Eternal the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he delivered them from Egypt, 26. And worshipped idols; 27. Therefore his wrath was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses written in the book of the law. 28. And he rooted them out of the land in his anger and wrath, and great indignation, and hath driven them into strange lands, as at this day.

29. The secrets of his will of purpose are with the Eternal our God; but the precepts of his reveal ed will are a perpetual rule to us and to our posterity, that we may keep all the precepts of his law.

When all these things are come upon thee, and thou shalt remember the blessing; and the curse set before thee, and ponder them in thy mind a mong all the nations, whither the Eternal thy God hath driven thee. 2. And shalt, return with thy children to the Eternal thy God, (by embracing the gospel), and obey his word (of the gospel), as thou art commanded, in all things, with all thine heart and soul. 3. Then the Eternal thy God will have compassion on thee, and bring thee back from thy captivity, gathering you from all the nations among whom he scattered you; 4. Even from the remotest; parts of the earth. 5. And he will bring thee intor the land which thy fathers possessed, and multiply thee above thine ancestors, and prosper thee. 6 And he will circumcise thine heart, and that of thy seed, to love the Eternal thy God with all thy heart,, and all thy soul, that thou mayest live happy. 7. And he will put all these curses on thine enemies, and thy haters who persecuted thee.. S. And thou shalt return, and obey the Eternal thy God's word,, and do all his commands, as thou art commanded this day. 9.
