the Eternal to be thy God, to walk in his ways, and obey him, observing his statutes, commands, and or dinances. 18 And the Eternal hath this day avouch ed thee to be his peculiar people, as he promised. 19 To exalt thee above all nations, (Psalm cxlviii. 20.) in praise, and in fame, and honour; that thou mayest be a holy people to him.

CHAP. XXVII.

MOSES SECOND CHARGE.

AGAIN Moses, with the elders of Israel, commanded the people, to keep all the commands given them. 2 Saying, When ye pass over Jordan to the land which the Eternal your God giveth you, set up great stones, and join them with lime. 3 And write on them all the words of this law, (the ten commands, with the blessings for obedience, and curses for disobedience), that thou mayest possess the land flowing with milk and honey, as the Eter, nal God of your fathers promised. 4 These stones shall be erected on mount Ebal. 5 And there shall ye build an altar of stones to the Eternal your God, without hewing them, or lifting up any tool on them, 6 For it shall be of whole stones; and you shall offer holocausts thereon to the Eternal your God. 7 And thank-offerings, of which thou shalt eat, and rejoice before the Eternal your God. 8 You shall write the words of the law on the stones very plainly.

9 Now Moses, with the priests and Levites, said to all Israel, Hearken, and regard, O Israel! his day thou art announced to be the people of the Eternal thy God, 10 Thou shalt, therefore, obey his word, and keep his commands and statutes, as thou art commanded this day.

11 So Moses charged the people on that day, saying, 12 When ye have gone over Jordan, the elders of the tribes of Simeon, Levi, Judali, Issa

P

char, Joseph, and Benjamin, shall stand (on the right hand) upon (the fruitful) mountain Gerizzim, for to bless the people. 13 And Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphthali, shall stand (on the left hand) upon the (wild) mountain Ebal, (opposite) to curse the people.

14 Then the Levites shall say to all Israel aloud, 15 Cursed be he that maketh a graven or molten image, and putteth the work of the artist in a secret place, being an abomination to the Eternal; and all the people shall say, Amen

16 Accursed be he that contemneth his father, or his mother; and all the people shall say, Amen. 17 Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's land-mark; and all the people shall say, Amen.

18 Cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of the way; and all the people shall say, Amen.

19 Cursed be he that does not justice to the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow; and all the people shall say, Amen.

20 Cursed be he that humbleth any of his father's wives, dishonouring his father; and all the people shall say, Amen.

21 Cursed be he that coupleth with any beast; and all the people shall say, Amen.

22 Cursed be he that humbleth his sister, and all the people shall say, Amen.

23 Cursed be he that humbleth his mother-inlaw, and all the people shall say, Amen.

24 Cursed be he that smitteth his neighbour secretly; and all the people shall say, Amen.

25 Cursed be he that taketh a bribe to slay the innocent; and all the people shall say, Amen.

26 Cursed be he that doth not resolve to practice all the words of this law; and all the people shall say, Amen.

CHP. XXVIII.

THE JEWS FATE TILL THE MILLENNIUM.

Now, if thou wilt observe the Eternal thy God's words, to do all his commands, as thou art this day enjoined, he will exalt thee high above all nations of the earth; 2. And all these blessings shall come upon thee:

3. Blessed shalt thou be in the city and in the field, 4. In thine offspring, in the fruit of thy ground, and of thy cattle, 5. In thy basket (or provisions for the present), and in thy store (laid up for time to come), 6. In thy outgoing and incoming. 7. The Eternal shall cause thine enemies to fall before thee; they shall come out against thee one way, and fall before thee seven ways. 8. The blessing of the Eternal shall be in thy storehouses, and on all thy works, in the land which he hath given thee. 9. He will establish thee for a holy people to himself, as he hath promised to thee, if thou wilt keep his commands, and walk in his ways. 10. And all the people of the earth shall see that thou art called the Eternal's people, and they shall be afraid of thee. 11. And the Eternal shall make thee abound in goods, in posterity, in the fruit of thy cattle, and of thy ground, in the land' which he promised to thy fathers to give thee. 12. The Eternal shall open to thee his good treasure, in the heaven, to give rain to thy land in due season; he will prosper all thy works: thou shalt lend to many nations, and shalt not borrow. 13. The Eternal thy God shall make thee highest, and not the lowest people, being superior to all, and subject to none, if thou keep his commands, as thou art this day enjoined, 14. And not depart from any of them to ei ther extreme, (as to enthusiasm and superstition, or infidelity and profaneness).

15. If thou wilt not obey the Eternal thy God's voice, to observe all his laws and ordinances, as thou

art commanded this day, all these curses shall come upon thee:

N

16. Cursed shalt thou be in the city and in the field; 17. In thy basket, and in thy store; 18. In thy posterity, in the fruit of thy land, and of thy cattle; 19. In thy going out, and coming in. 20. The Eternal shall send upon thee sorrow, vexation, and reproach, in all thy endeavours, till thou be destroyed speedily, for thy wickedness, in forsaking him. 21. He will send the pestilence to consume thee from off the land thou goest to possess. 22. He will smite thee with a consumption, fever, ague, inflammation, drought, blasting, and mildew, until thou perish. 23. The heaven over thy head shall be as brass, and the earth under thy feet as iron; 24. For rain thou shalt have burning dust, falling on thee, till thou be destroyed. 25. The Eternal shall cause thee to fall before thine enemies; thou shalt go out against them one way, and flee before them seven ways, and be dispersed through all the kingdoms of the earth. 26. And your carcases shall be meat to the fowls of the air, and the beasts of the field, and none shall annoy them.

27. The Eternal will smite thee with the ulcers of Egypt, the piles, and scurvy, and itch, whereof thou canst not be healed; 28. And with blindness, madness, and horror of heart: 29. And thou shalt grope in the noon-day, as the blind do in darkness; thou shalt prosper in none of thy ways, but be oppressed and spoiled perpetually, and none shall save thee. 30. Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another shall take her, and build a house, but not inhabit it, and plant a vineyard, but not gather its grapes. 31. Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat of it; thine ass shall be violently taken away before thy face, and shall not be restored; thine enemies shall have thy sheep, and they shall not be rescued. 32. Thy sons and thy daughters shall be in bondage to another people, and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them every

day, and thou shalt not be able to rescue them. 33. The fruit of thy land, and of all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up, and thou shalt be sorely oppressed continually, 34. So that thou shalt be astonished at what thou shalt see. 35. Thou shalt be smitten from the sole of thy feet, in thy legs and in thy knees, and to the crown of thy head, with grievous and incurable ulcers.

36. The Eternal shall also bring thee, and thy king which thou hast set up over thee, to a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, where thou shalt serve gods of wood and stone. 37. Thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a derision among all nations, whether the Eternal shall lead thee.. 38. Thou shalt take much seed out into the field, and bring but little in, for the locusts shall consume it. 39. Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither gather the grapes nor drink of the wine, for the weavil shall eat them. 40. Though thou shalt have olive trees through all thy coasts, thou shalt not anoint thyself with oil; for the tree shall cast its fruit. 41. Thou shalt have sons and daughters, but shalt not retain them, for they shall be taken captives. 42. The locusts shall consume all thy trees, and the fruits of thy lands. 43. The stranger that is in the place of thy abode shall become very high above thee, and thou shalt be brought very low. 44. He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him.

45. All these curses shall pursue thee, and come upon thee, till thou be destroyed, because thou obeyest not the word of the Eternal thy God, to observe his commands and ordinances. 46. And they shall be upon thee, and upon thy seed, for a sign and a wonder, for a long duration. 47. Because thou servedst not the Eternal thy God, with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance he conferred on thee. 48.Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which he shall send against thee, in hunger, and
