ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Eternal giveth you.

18. Therefore shall ye lay up these words in your heart, and in your mind, that thou mayest observe them, as a signet on thine hand, and frontlets between thine eyes. 19. And ye shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when ye sit in sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when ye lie down, and when ye rise up. 20. Thou shalt write them on the door posts of thy house, and on thy gates: 21. That thy days, and those of your children, may be prolonged and blessed, as the days of heaven upon earth, in the land which the Eternal promised to give you.

22. If ye diligently keep all the commands I give you, to love the Eternal your God, to walk in his ways, and cleave to him, 24. Then will he drive out nations before you greater and mightier than yourselves, that ye may possess their land. 24. From the wilderness, to Lebanon, from the river Euphrates, to the Mediterranean sea, every place where ye shall come. 25. None shall be able to stand before you; for the Eternal your God will bring the fear and dread of you on every place to which ye shall come, as he said to you.

26. Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse. 27. For obedience to the Eternal your God's commands: 28. Or disobedience, and following strange gods.

29. And when the Eternal brings thee into the promised land, the blessing shall be proclaimed on mount Gerizim, and the curse on mount Ebal; 30. Beyond Jordan westward, in the Canaanites' land, in the plain opposite Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh. 31. For ye shall assuredly possess the land promised by the Eternal your God.

32. Be careful to observe all the statutes and judgements which I now set before you.

CHAP. XII.

MONUMENTS OF IDOLATRY TO BE DESTROYED.

THESE are the statutes and judgements ye shall observe in the land the Eternal God of your fathers gives you to possess, as long as ye live on earth.

2. Ye shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations, your predecessors, served their gods, on the high mountains, on the little hills, and under every green tree. 3. Overthrow their altars, break their statues, burn their groves, demolish their caryed idol gods, and blot out their memorial from that place.

4. Ye shall not so worship the Eternal your God; 5. But come diligently to the place which he shall chuse among all your tribes to record his name therein. 6. And thither shall ye bring your holocausts, and other sacrifices, your tythes, your heaveofferings, your free-will offerings, that ye vowed to the Eternal, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks. 7. And there, with your households, shall ye feast before the Eternal your God; and rejoice that he hath blessed you in all your undertakings.

8. Ye shall not offer only as we do here, every man as it seemeth meet to him, on our journey; 9. Because ye are not come to the rest, and the inhe ritance which the Eternal your God giveth you.

10. But when ye pass over Jordan, and dwell in the land the Eternal your God giveth you to inherit; and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies around, so that ye dwell in safety; 11. Then there shall be a place chosen by the Eternal your God, where he will establish the memorial of his name; to it shall ye bring your tythes and vowed gifts, heave-offerings, (v. 6.) and all the sacrifices and offerings which I commanded you.

12. And ye shall rejoice before the Eternal your God, with your sons, and your daughters, your men

servants, and your maid-servants; and the Levite that is in your city shall partake with you, as he hath no inheritance in the land with you,

13. Beware of offering thy holocausts in every place that seemeth meet to thee. 14. But only in the place which the Eternal shall chuse in one of your tribes, shall ye offer your holocausts, and do all that I command you.

15. Yet thou mayest kill and eat flesh within all thy cities, whatever thou desirest that is clean, wherewith the Eternal thy God hath blessed thee, both the unclean and the clean persons may eat thereof; as of the roe-buck, and the hart; 16. Only ye shall not eat the blood, but pour it out on the earth as water.

17. Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, wine, and oil, or the firstlings of thy herd or flock, nor any thing that thou hast vowed, nor thy free-will offerings nor heave-offerings, 18. But thou mayest eat them before the Eternal thy God, in the place that he shall chose for his altar, with thy son, and daughter, thy servant, and thy maid, and the Levite that is within thy gates; and rejoice before the Eternal thy God in all that thou undertakest.

19. Beware of neglecting the Levites as long as thou livest.

20. When the Eternal thy God shall enlarge thy possessions as he hath promised to thee, thou mayest satisfy thy desires, in eating clean flesh.

21. If the place where the Eternal thy God hath chosen to have his name recorded, be too far from thee, in order to take thy cattle there to slay them, and sprinkle their blood on the altar; then thou shalt kill what he hath given thee, as I commanded thee, and eat what thou desirest within thy gates. 22. (Both the clean and unclean persons may eat). 23. Only be sure not to eat the blood, because it is the life. 24. Thou shalt pour it on the earth as water.

25. That it may be well with thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do what the E ternal approveth.

26. But thy holy things, (v. 17.) and what thou hast vowed, shalt thou take to the place which the Eternal shall chuse: 27. And offer both the flesh and the blood of thy holocausts on the altar of the Eternal thy God; and the blood of thy peace-offerings shall be poured out on the altar; but thou shalt eat the flesh.

28. Hearken to all the words I command thee this day, that it may be well with thee, and thy posterity forever, by doing what is right and good in the Eternal thy God's sight.

29. When he shall cut off the nations of the land which thou goest to possess, that thou mayest succeed them. 30. Beware, lest thou be entangled in their snare, by following their example, after they are destroyed before thee, enquiring after their gods, saying, As these nations served their gods, so will I do. 31. Thou shalt not serve the Eternal thy God as they did their idols; for they have done, to serve their gods, every abomination which the Eternal hateth; they have even burnt their sons and their daughters to them.

32. Observe to do whatever I command you, with out adding to it, or diminishing from it.

CHAP. XIII.

ENTICERS TO IDOLATRY TO BE STONED.

If there be among you an impostor, prophet, or dreamer, who doth some delusive artificial trick, or wonder (or by analogy foresignifies something to happen); 2. And the thing take place which he said he foresaw, or did by the influence of false gods, 3. Saying, Let us serve other gods which thou hast not known, 4. Thou shalt not hearken to that prophet or that dreamer; for the Eternal your God suf

fereth you to be thus tried and proved, whether ye love the Eternal your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, ye shall worship the Eternal only, and fear him, and keep his commands, and obey his voice, and serve him, cleaving to him. 5. And that prophet or dreamer shall be put to death; because he hath spoken rebellion against the Eternal your God, who delivered you from the Egyptian bondage, to lead thee to worship other gods, and forsake the Eternal's law: so ye shall put away evil from among you.

6. If thy brother, thine own mother's son, or thy son, or thy daughter, or even thy wife, or thy dearest friend, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go worship other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; 7. Even the gods of the people around you, far or near, from the one end of the land to the other; 8. Thou shalt not hearken or consent to him: thou shalt not pity, nor spare him, nor conceal him; 9. But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and next these of all the people. 10. He shall be stoned; because he endeavoured to turn thee away from the Eternal thy God, who delivered thee from the Egyptian bondage. 11. That all Israel may hear, and fear to do any more such wickedness.

12. If thou hear it said, that in one of thy cities which the Eternal thy God gives thee, 13. Certain wicked men have enticed the inhabitants to idolatry; 14. Then thou shalt enquire and search diligently and if it be certain that such abomination is done, 15. Thou shalt destroy that city, with its inhabitants, and all that is therein. 16. Thou shalt gather all its spoil into the midst of the street, and burn it and the city, as the Eternal thy God commanded thee; it shall be an heap, and never be rebuilt. 17. Thou shalt not intermeddle with any of the goods of it, as being accursed, that the Eternal
