2.

teach you to do in the land ye go to possess. To fear the Eternal, thy God, and teach thine offspring so to do, doing all he hath commanded all the days of thy life, that it may be prolonged.

3. Hearken, therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily in the land that flows with milk and honey, as the Eternal God of thy fathers hath promised to thee.

4. Hear, O Israel, the Eternal, our Alehim, is one ETERNAL; 5. Whom thou shalt love with all thy heart, all thy soul, and all thy might. 6. And let these doctrines I now teach thee be in thy heart. 7. And teach them to thy children; speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest in the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8. Remember them as constantly as if thou hadst the memorial of them wrapt about thine hand, or placed as a frontlet between thine eyes. 9. Write them on the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

10. And when the Eternal thy God hath brought thee into the land he promised to thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give thee, with great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, 11. And houses full of all good things, which thou providedst not, and wells which thou didst not dig, and vineyards and olive trees, which thou didst not plant. 12. Of which, when thou eatest and art full, beware, lest thou forget the Eternal, who delivered thee from Egyptian bondage.

13. Thou shalt fear the Eternal thy God, and serve him, and enter into covenant with him.

14. Ye shall not follow the gods of the nations around you: 15. Lest the Eternal thy God's anger be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from the earth: for he is among you a jealous God.

16. Ye shall not tempt him, as ye did at Massah; 17. But diligently keep his commands, testimonies,

and statutes. 18. Doing what is right and good in his sight, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst possess the good land he sware to thy fathers to give thee, 19. And to cast out all thine enemies before thee.

20. And when thy children shall ask thee in future times concerning the testimonies, statutes, and judgements, which the Eternal your God commanded you, 21. Thou shalt tell them that ye were in bondage to the king of Egypt, and the Eternal delivered you by his mighty power; 22. And inflicted (wonderful) great and terrible judgements on Pharaoh, and all his vassals, before our eyes; 23. And delivered us, to give us the land he promised to our fathers. 24. And commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Eternal our God, which is for our good always, that he might preserve our life, as at this day. 25. To observe all the Eternal our God's commands before him, shall be our wisdom, duty, glory, and gain.

CHAP. VII.

UNION WITH THE NATIONS FORBIDDEN.

WHEN the Eternal thy God hath given thee possession of the promised land, having cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; SEVEN nations greater and mightier than thee. 2. When he shall deliver them to thee, thou shalt exterminate them, and make no covenant with them to spare them; 3. Nor to make marriages with them; 4. For they will lead thee to idolatry; and then shall the Eternal's anger be kindled against thee, as against them, to destroy thee like them. 5. Destroy their altars, break down their statues, cut down their groves, and but their graven images. 6. For thou art apple sett for the Eternal thy God; he hath chosen thee a pe

culiar people to himself, above all the people on earth. 7. He set not his affection on you, nor prefered you, because ye were a greater people; for ye were the least of all people: 8. But because he loved you of his own good pleasure, and would keep the promise made to your fathers, he delivered you by his great power, and redeemed you from your bondage to Pharaoh king of Egypt.

9. Know, therefore, the Eternal thy God is the only true God, faithful, and keeping the covenant of mercy with them that love him and keep his com mands, to a thousand generations. 10. And destroys speedily those that hate him, repaying them openly.

11. Thou shalt therefore keep the commands, ordinances, and judgements, which I now command thee; 12. Which if ye observe, the Eternal thy God will keep for thee the covenant, and perform the mercy he promised to thy fathers; 18. And will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee, and bless also thine offspring, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, thy wine, and oil; the product of thy cattle and flocks in the land, which he promised to thy fathers to give thee. 14. Thou shalt be blessed a bove all people; the males and the females among you, and the cattle, shall be all fruitful. 15. And the Eternal will keep all sickness from thee, and bring upon thee none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, but lay them upon them that hate thee. 16. And thou shalt smite all the Eternal thy God shall deliver to thee, and not spare them, nor serve their gods, to bring destruction on thyself.

17. Say not in thine heart, These nations are greater than I; how then can I dispossess them? 18. Be not afraid of them, but remember well what the Eternal thy God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: 19. According to the great trials which thou sawest, and the prodigies and wonders, and great power displayed, whereby the Eternal delivered thee,

so shall he do to all the people whom thou fearest. 20. The Eternal thy God will also send the hornet. among them, till they that escape, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed. 21. Fear them not, because the Eternal thy God is on thy side, a mighty and terrible God. 22. Thou shalt not exterminate them all at once, lest the beasts of prey multiply upon thee; 23. But the Eternal thy God will deliver them to thee, and destroy them utterly by many and great judgements; 24. With their kings, whose name thou shalt destroy from under heaven: no man shall be able to stand before thee, when thou destroyest them.

25. Ye shall burn their idol-gods, and not desire nor retain the silver and gold of them, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for it is an abomination to the Eternal thy God; 26. Bring not an abomination into thy house, lest thou become accursed like it, but utterly detest and abhorit; for it is an accursed thing.

CHAP. VIII.

AN EXHORTATION TO OBEDIENCE.

YE shall carefully practice all the commands I give you this day; that ye may live, multiply, and inherit the land which the Eternal promised to your fathers. 2. Remember all the way in which the Eternal thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee and try thee, to make thee know what was in thine heart, whether or not thou wouldst keep his commands. 3. Having humbled thee by hunger, he fed thee with manna, which neither thou nor thy fathers had known, to make thee know that man doth not live by bread alone, but by the will and word of God, all these forty years; 4. Neither thy garments nor shoes waxed old (but enlarged with thy stature without rending); nor did thy feet swell by going in the heat of the day.

5. So consider in thy heart that the Eternal thy God chastiseth thee only as a father doth his son, 6. That thou mayest keep his commands, to waik in his ways, and fear him. 7. For he bringeth thee into a good land, having water brooks, fountains, and lakes, that spring from hills and in valleys; 3. With wheat and barley, vines, and fig-trees, pomegranates, oil-olive, and palm honey; 9. Abounding with bread, where thou shalt lack nothing, having iron stones, and whose hills contain brass. 10. When thou hast eaten abundantly, thou shalt bless the Eternal thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

11. Beware thou forget not the Eternal thy God in neglecting to keep his commands, judgements, and statutes, which I command thee this day, 12. Lest when thou hast built and inhabited goodly cities, and eaten fully therein, 13. And when thy flocks of cattle, and thy silver and gold, and all that thou hast, is increased, 14. Thine heart become haughty, so as to forget the Eternal thy God, who delivered thee from thy bondage in Egypt, 15. And who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents and scorpions, in places without water; who brought water out of the flinty rock for thee; 16. Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and try thee for thy good, at thy latter end.

17. If thou say in thine heart, The power of my hand hath gotten me this wealth, 18. And consider not that it is the Eternal thy God who giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may ratify the covenant he made with thy fathers, as at this day; 19. If thou forsake the Eternal thy God, and worship other gods, I certify thee that thou shalt surely perish, 20. Like the nations whom the Eternal destroyed before thy face, for not obeying the Eternal thy God's commands.
