thee in thy pilgrimage through this great wilderness; these forty years he hath been with thee, thou hast suffered no want. I sent then to the king of Edom, saying, Let us pass through thy land on the highway; but he said, If ye come I will attack you.

8. And when we passed by our brethren the Edomites, in Seir, through the plain from Elath and Ezion-geber, we turned, and passed through the wilderness of Moab. 9. Then the Eternal said to me, Attack not the Moabites, nor trouble them: I will give thee none of their land, for I have given Ar to Lot's progeny. 10. (The Emmims dwelt formerly there, a people strong and many, 11. And giants, as the Anakims; the Moabites call them Emminis, i. e. terrible. 12. The Horites formerly inhabited Seir, but the Edomites conquered them, as Israel shall do the land which the Eternal givethi him to possess).

13. Let us now go speedily over the brook Zered, said I; and we did so. 14. In coming from Kadesh-barnea to it we spent THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS, till all the warriors of that generation were wasted, as the Eternal said to them. 15. The Eternal's hand destroyed them.

16. So when they were all dead, 17. The Eternal said to me, 18. Thou art to pass by Ar, on the border of Moab, this day. 19. And when thou approachest the Ammonites, meddle not with them, nor trouble them: I will give thee none of their land -I have given it to Lot's posterity. 20. (It was also reckoned a land of giants, being formerly inhabited by such, which the Ammorites called Zamzumims, i. e. great criminals; 21. Being a people powerful and many, and giants as the Anakims; but the Eternal destroyed them before the Ammonites, who succeeded them. 22. As he destroyed the Horites in Seir before the Edomites, who succeed them still. 23. And the Caphtorites, from Caphtor, destroyed the Avites, in Hazeral, even to Azzalı, and succeeded them)

24. Pass over the river Arnon speedily; I have given Sihon king of the Amorites in Heshbon, and his land, to thy disposal; defeat him, and possess it. 25. I will now make all the nations, who shall hear of thee, fear and dread thee, and tremble, and be in anguish, because of thee.

26. Then I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon at Heshbon, with a message of peace, saying, 27. Let me pass through thy land: I will go in the high-way only. 28. I will purchase meat to eat, and water to drink, from thee, 29. As I did from the Edomites in Seir, and the Moabites in Ar: I will go over Jordan to the land which the Eternal, our God, giveth us.

30. But he would not let us pass by him; for the Eternal had left him to the obstinacy of his spirit, and hardness of his heart, to deliver him into thy hand, as at this day.

31. Then the Eternal said to me, I have given Sihon and his land to thee; enter on the sion of it.

32. He then came out to attack us with all his people at Jahaz. 33. But the Eternal, our God, discomfited him before us; so we smote him, with his sons, and all his people. 34. And we took all his cities, and destroyed all the inhabitants, 35. And took the cattle and the spoil of the cities. 36. From Aroer, on the banks of Arnon, even to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; the Eternal, our God, delivered them all to us. 37. We came not to take any of the land of the Ammonites, even the whole track, that on the river Jabbock, and the cities in the neighbouring mountains, and whatever the Eternal, our God, forbade us.

CHAP. III.

OG, THE KING OF BASHAN, CONQUERED.

THEN we turned and went towards Bashan; and

Og, king of it, came to attack us with all his people at Edrei.

2. But the Eternal said to me, Fear him not; for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, juto thy hand; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sihon, king of the Amorites, at Heshbon.

3. So we smote him and all his people. 4. And took all his cities, even sixty, and all the region of Argob, his kingdom. 5. All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates and bars, besides a great many unwalled towns. 6. And we destroyed all the inhabitants; 7. And took all the cattle and the spoil. 8. So we took from the two Amorite kings the land on the east of Jordan, from the river Arnon, to mount Hermon; 9. (Which the Sidonians call Sirion, and the Amorites Shenir), and all the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Shalchah and Edrei. 10. (Only Og remained of the giants. 11. His bed-stead was of iron; it is in Rabath, the capital of the Ammonites, who took it from him in battle; it is nine common cubits long, and four broad). 12. And the land which we took at that time, from Aroer by the river Arnon, and half Mount Gilead, with its cities, I gave to the ReuBenites and the Gadites. 13. And I gave the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, to the half tribe of Manasseh, (all the region of Argob, which was called the land of giants. 14. Jair, the son of Manasseh, took all that country, unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi, and called them after his own name, the villages of Jair, in Bashan).

15. And I gave Gilead to Machir. 16. And I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites, from Gilead even to. the river Arnon, and its interior confines, the half of the valley, and the Amonites' border, on the river Jabok. 17. The plain also, and Jordan's coast, from Chinnereth, even to the sea of the plain (of Sodom), which is the Salt, or Dead Sea, eastward of the descent of Pisgah.

18. I commanded you then, saying, The Eternal, your God, giveth you this land for an inheritance; but all of you that are able for war shall pass over Jordan armed, before your brethren. 19. But your

wives, children, and cattle, of which ye have many, shall abide in the cities which I have given you, 20. Until the Eternal, your God, give them rest, as well as you, in the land he hath given them beyond Jordan; and then shall each man of you return to your possessions.

21. I commanded Joshua then, saying, Thine eyes have seen all the Eternal your God did to these two kings; so shall he do to all the kings whither thou goest. 22. Ye shall not fear them; for the Eternal your God shall fight for you.

23. I entreated the Eternal then, saying, 24. O Eternal God! thou hast already shewn thy servant thy mighty power and greatness; there is no god in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy mighty works. 25. I pray thee, let me go over and see the good land beyond Jordan, those fertile mountains, and yonder Lebanon.

26. But the Eternal was angry at me for your sakes, and would not hearken to me; but said, Be satisfied, and speak no more of this matter. 27. Go up to the summit Pisgah, and look west-ward, northward, south-ward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes; for thou shalt not go over Jordan. 28. But charge Joshua, encourage him, and fortify his mind; for he shall go over before this people, and put them in possession of the land thou shalt see. 29. We then abode in the valley opposite to Beth Peor.

CHAP. IV.

AN EXHORTATION TO OBEDIENCE.

HEARKEN now, O Israel, to the statutes and the judgements I teach you; for if ye do them ye shall

live, and go to possess the land which the Eternal, the God of your fathers, giveth you.

2. Ye shall neither add to, nor take from the things I command you; but keep the Eternal your God's commands, which I give you.

3. Ye have seen what the Eternal did because of Baal-Peor; he destroyed all that followed it. 4. But all you who followed the Eternal, your God, are yet alive.

5. Lo, I have taught you the statutes and judge. ments which the Eternal, my God, commanded me to deliver to you, to keep in the land ye go to possess. 6. Therefore observe and practice them, for thus your wisdom and understanding will appear to the nations which shall hear of your law; and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 7, 8. For what nation is so great, that hath statutes and judgements so righteous, as all this law which I now set before you, and who hath God so nigh to them? as the Eternal our God is ready to do all things for which we call upon him. 9. Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently; forget not what thine eyes have seen, nor let them depart from thine heart, all thy life, but teach them to thy sons, and their sons. 10. Especially what thou sawest and heardst, when thou stoodst before the Eternal thy God in Sinai (Horeb); when he said to me, Assemble the people, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all their days on earth, and teach their children so to do. 11. Then ye approached and stood under the mountain, which blazed with lightening that ascended to the midst of heaven, involved in stormy clouds and thick darkness.

12. And when the Eternal spake to you out of the midst of the fire, ye heard the words, but saw no similitude; ye heard only a voice. 13. Then he declared to you his covenant, the TEN Commands, which he commanded you to perform, and he wrote
