Say to the Israelites, when ye have passed over Jordan into Canaan, 52. Ye shall drive out the idolatrous inhabitants, and destroy all their pictures and images, and demolish all their idol hills. 53. And possess the land; for I have given it to you. 54. Ye shall divide it among your families by lot; according to their numbers shall be their shares in their tribes. 55. But if ye drive not out the inhabitants, they will be as thorns and prickles to you, even to your eyes, to blind you, and pervert you to idolatry, and distress you. 56. And then I will send a nation to drive you out, as I sent you to drive them

out.

RULES FOR DIVIDING THE LAND, &c.

pass

Now the Eternal said to Moses, 2. Give a command to the Israelites, that when they come into Canaan their inheritance, 3. To make their southwest corner where the wilderness of Zin toucheth the border of Edom, 4. So that your southern boundary shall run eastward from the utmost point of the Salt Sea (of Sodom); and winding about the south side of the ascent of the Scorpion heights, shall on to Zin, thence extending to the south of Kadeshbarnea, it shall pass on to Hazar-adar, and thence to Azmon; 5. From thence the boundary shall wind about to the torrent of Egypt (a stream of the Nile), and terminate at the Great Sea. 6. And the Great Sea (ie. the Mediterranean) shall be your west border; 7. And your northern border shall be from that sea to mount Lebanon's top; 8. And thence to the entrance of Hamath, and to Zedad, 9. And to Zipron, and to Hazar-enan. 10. And your east border shall be from thence to Shephaim; 11. And thence to Riblah, to the east side of Ain, and to the lake of Chinereth eastward, 12. Along Jordan, and to the Salt (dead)Sea (i. e. the lake of Sodom); this shall be your land.

13. Then Moses commanded the Israelites, saying, The Eternal commanded to give that land by lot to the nine tribes, and the half tribe; 14. Because the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, 15. Had received their inheritance on the east side of Jordan, opposite to Jericho.

16. The Eternal said to Moses, 17. The men who shall divide the land to you, are Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, 18. And one chief of every tribe. 19. Of Judah's tribe, Caleb, Jephunneh's son; 20. Of Simeon, Shelumiel, Ammihud's son; 21. Of Benjamin, Elidad, Cheslon's-son; 22.

Of Dan, Bukki, Jogli's son; 23. Of Joseph, for Ma. nesseh's half tribe, Haniel, Ephod's son; 24. And for Ephraim's tribe, Kemuel, Shiphtan's son; 25. Of Zebulon, Elizaphan, Parnah's son; 26. Of Issachar, Paltiel, Azzan's son; 27. Of Asher, Ahihud, Shelomi's son; 28, Of Naphthali, Pedahel, Ammihud's son. 29. CHAP. XXXV.

CITIES GIVEN TO THE LEVITES.

Now the Eternal said again to Moses, in the plains of Moab, beside Jordan, opposite to Jericho, 2. Command the Israelites to give to the Levites, in their inheritance, cities to inhabit, with fields surrounding them, 3. For their cattle, and for their convenience, 4. Extending a thousand cubits every way from the walls of their cities. 5. The length of each of the four sides, the eastern, the western, the northern, and the southern, shall be two thousand cubits. 6. Among the forty-two cities given the Levites, there shall be six cities of refuge. 7. So all the cities ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight, with their enclosures. 8. The cities shall be given out of every tribe, according to the number they have: those that have many shall give many, and those that have few shall give few.

9. The Eternal said again to Moses, 10. Say to the Israelites, When ye have come over Jordan to Canaan, 12. Ye shall appoint cities for him to flee to, that kills another unawares; 11. As a refuge from the kinsman avenger, that the man-slayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgement. 13, 14. There shall be three on each side of Jordan, 15. That such, whether an Israelite, a stranger, or a sojourner, may flee thither. 16. But if he smite him willingly, so that he die, he is a mur

derer, and shall surely be put to death. 18, 19. When the nearest of blood meeteth the murderer, he shall slay him, upon conviction, 20. If he, from hatred, thrust at him, 21. Or in enmity smote him, that he die. 22. But if he smote him suddenly without intention, or cast any thing that hit him without design, 23. And was not his enemy, nor sought his hurt before; 24. Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the avenger of blood, by these ruies. 25. And deliver him from him, and restore him to the city of refuge, whither he had fled; where he shall abide till the high priest's death. 26. But if he at any time come without the borders of the city of refuge, 27. And the avenger of blood slay him, he shall not be guilty of blood. 28. But after the high priest's death, he shall return to his own possession.

29. These shall be statutes for you and your po sterity, in all your habitations.

30. The murderer shall suffer death by the testi mony of two or three witnesses, but not by that of one. 31. No compensation shall be accepted for the life of a murderer, being guilty of death; he shall surely be put to death. 32. And no compensation shall be taken for allowing him who fled to the city of refuge, to return to his own land, before the death of the High Priest. 33. So ye shall not pollute the land, for blood defileth it; and it cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed thereon, but by 'the blood of him that shed it: 34. Therefore defile 'not the land which ye shall inhabit wherein I dwell; for I, the Eternal, dwell among the Israelites.
