CHAP. XXV.

ISRAEL'S WHOREDOM AND IDOLATRY.

BUT while the Israelites abode in Shittim (their forty-second and last encampment), they began to commit whoredom with the women of Moab; 2. Who invited them to the sacrifices of their gods, of which they ate, and worshipped them. 8. Thus the Israelites were attached to Baal Peor; which kindled the Eternal's anger against them.

4. So he said to Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and slay the idolatrous Israelites, and hang them up till the sun's light depart, as a punishment from the Eternal, that his wrath against Israel may

cease.

5. Then Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined to Baal Peor. 6. Meantime an Israelite brought a Midianitish woman, in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation, who were weeping before the tabernacle door.

7. Which when Phinehas, Eleazar's son, Aaron the priest's son, saw, he went from the congregation with a javelin in his hand, 8. And entered their tent, and thrust it through the bodies of both; so the plague ceased, 9. Twenty-four thousand having died of it.

10. Then the Eternal said to Moses, 11. Phinehas the priest hath turned away my wrath from the Israelites, being very zealous for my glory among them, that I might not consume them in my jealousy. 12. Therefore tell him, that the priesthood is confirmed to him by a perpetual covenant of peace, 13. And to his posterity after him, because he was zealous for his God, and to make peace for the Is raelites.

14. The Israelite's name whom he slew with the the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, son of Salu, a chief of Simeon's tribe. 15. And the woman's name

.

was Cozbi, daughter of Zur, a Midianitish chief.

16, 17. Then the Eternal said to Moses, Harass the Midianites, and smite them; 18. Because they have troubled you with their subtilty, seducing you to the idolatry of Peor, and to whoredom.

CHAP. XXVI.

ISRAEL NUMBERED AGAIN.

AFTER the plague, the Eternal said to Moses and Eleazar the priest, Aaron's son, 2. Number all the Israelites from twenty years old and upwards, that are able for war. 3. So Moses and Eleazar numbered them in the plains of Moab, by Jordan, opposite to Jericho, 4. As the Eternal commanded.

5. Reuben's posterity, Israel's oldest son, were Hanoch, and the Hanochites his offspring; Pallu, and his offspring the Palluites; 6. Hezron and the Hezronites; Carmi and the Carmites. 7. Of the Reubenites were numbered forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

8. Pallu's posterity, Eliab; 9. Eliab's sons, Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram: these two were of the national council, and withstood Moses and Aaron in Korah's company, which provoked the Eternal, 10. So that the earth clave, and swallowed them up alive, when the fire devoured Korah and two hundred and fifty men for a warning to others, when their associates died. 11. But Korah's children (who followed not his example), died not.

12. Simeon's posterity by their families, were Nemuel, and his race, Jamin, and his race. 13. Zerah, and his race, Jachin, and his race, Shaul, and his race. 14. Twenty-two thousand and two hundred.

15. Gad's posterity by their families; Zephon, and his race, Haggi, and his race, Shuni, and his race, 16. Ozni, and his race, Eri, and his race, 17. Arad, and his race, Arelì, and his race. 18.

Of Gad's posterity were numbered forty thousand and five hundred.

19. Er and Onan, Judah's sons, died in Canaan, 20. Of Shelah the Shelahites, of Pharez the Pharezites, of Zerah the Zerahites. 21. Of Pharez' posterity were Hezron, the Hezronites father, Hamuel the Hamuelites father. 22. These were Judah's offspring, whereof were numbered seventy-six thousand and five hundred.

23. Issachar's posterity were, Tola, the Tolaites father, Pua, the Puaites father. 24. Of Jashub the family of the Jashubites, of Shimron the family of the Shimronites. 25. Of whom were numbered sixty-four thousand and three hundred.

26. Zebulon's posterity were, Sered the Seredites father, Elon the Elonites father, Jahleel the Jahleelites father. 27. Of whom were numbered sixty thousand and five hundred.

28. Joseph's posterity were, Manasseh and Ephraim. 29. Manasseh's sons were, Machir the Machirites father, and his son Gilead, the Gileadites father.

30. Gilead's posterity were, Jezer the Jezerites father, Helek the Helekites father, 31. Asriel the Asrielites father, Shechem the Shechemites father, 32. Shemida the Shemidaites father, Hepher the Hepherites father, 83. Zelophehad, Hepher's son, had no sons but daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noe, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 34. Of Manasseh's posterity were numbered fifty-two thousand and seven hundred.

35. Ephraim's posterity were, Shuthelah the Shuthelahites father, Becher, whence the Becherites, Tahan whence the Tahanites, 36. Of Shuthelah was Eran the Eranites father. 37. Of Ephraim's posterity were numbered thirty-two thousand five hundred.

38. Benjamin's posterity were Bela, whence the Belaites, Ashbel, whence the Ashbelites, Ahiram,

of whom were the Ahiramites, 39. Of Shupham, the Shuphamites, of Hupham, the Huphamites. 40. Bela's posterity were Ared and Naaman, the fathers of the Aredites and Naamanites. 41. Of Benjamin's posterity were numbered forty-five thousand and six hundred.

42. Dan's posterity were Shuham, the Shuhamites father; 43. Of whom were numbered sixty-four thousand and four hundred.

44. Asher's posterity were, Jimna, the Jimnaites father; Jesui, the Jesuites father; Berah, the Berahites father; 45. Heber, the Heberites father; Malchiel, the Malchielites father. 46. And Asher had a daughter called Sarah. 47. Of Asher's posterity were numbered fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

48. Naphthali's posterity were Jahzeel, the Jahzeelites father; Guni, the Gunites father; 49. Jezer, the Jezerites father; Shillem, the Shilemites father. 50. Of Naphthali's posterity were numbered forty-five thousand and four hundred. 51. Of all the Israelites there were numbered six hundred thousand, and a thousand seven hundred and thirty.

52. Then the Eternal said to Moses, 53. To these the land shall be divided. 54. Every tribe shall have according to their numbers. 55. It shall be divided by lot, 56. And possessed accordingly.

57. And of the Levites were numbered, Gershon, and his posterity the Gershonites; Kohath and Merari, and their posterity. 50. The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, the Korathites; Kohath begat Amram, 59. Whose wife was Jochebed, a daughter of Levi, born in Egypt; she had Aaron, Moses, and Mary. 60. Aaron's sons were Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61. Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before the Eternal. 62. The number of the Levites from a month old and upward, was twenty-three thousand males; they were not numbered among the other tribes, because no inheritance was given them in the land.

63. All these were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest. 64. None of whom were amongst those that were numbered at Sinai, except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, the son of Nun. 65. For all the rest died in the wilderness.

CHAP. XXVII.

THE LAW FOR HEIRESSES.

1

THEN came Zelophehad's daughters, Hepher's son, Gilead's son, Machir's son, Manasseh's son, Joseph's son; their names were Mahlah, Noe, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2. And they stood before Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs of all the congregation, saying, 3. Our father died in the wilderness; he was not in Korah's company, who rebelled against the Eternal and Moses, but died in his own unbelief. 4. Why should our father's name cease to exist in his family, because he had no sons? give us a possession among our father's brethren. 5. Then Moses brought heir cause before the Eternal.

6. Then the Eternal said to Moses, They are in the right; they shall possess what would have fallen to their father among their brethren. 8. And thou shalt say to the Israelites, If a man have no sons, but daughters, they shall possess his inheritance. 9. And if he have no children, his brethren shall have his inheritance. 10. And if he hath no brethren, his father's brethren shall possess it. 11. And if he hath none, his nearest relation shall possess it.

12. Now the Eternal said to Moses, Ascend the mount Abarim, to see the land I have given to the Israelites. 13. And having seen it, thou shalt be joined to thy people, like Aaron thy brother. 14. For in the desart of Zin, in the peoples' strife, ye offended against my command, not glorifying me before them at the water of contention, in Kadesh of Zin. Deut. iii. 24.

15. Then Moses replied, 16. Let the Eternal,
