CHAP. VIII.

HOW THE LAMPS ARE TO BE LIGHTED.

Now the Eternal said to Moses, 2. Say to Aaron, thou shalt light the candlestick's seven lamps to shine forth. 3. And Aaron did so.

4. The candlestick was made of one piece of solid gold; the seven lamps, with their flowers, were formed out of the same shaft, being six around it, according to the pattern which the Eternal shewed to Moses on the Mount.

5. The Eternal spake again to Moses, 6. Take the Levites from among the Israelites, and purify them. 7. For cleansing them, thou shalt sprinkle purifying water upon them, Numb. xix. 9. And they shall shave off all their hair, and wash their clothes, and make themselves clean. 8. Then shall they take one young bullock (for a holocaust), with its meat-offering, even fine flour mingled with oil; and another for a sin-offering: 9. Then thou shalt bring the Levites before the tabernacle, and assemble all the elders of Israel there; 10. Then they shall put their hands on the Levites, before the Eternal: 11. And Aaron shall offer the Levites as the Israelites offering for the Eternal's service. 12, Then the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bullocks; and thou shalt offer the one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, to the Eternal, to make atonement for the Levites. 13. And set them before Aaron and his sons, as the Eternal's offering. 14. Thus shalt thou sepa rate the Levites from among the Israelites, to be mine, saith the Eternal.

15. And after they are cleansed, and offered, they shall come nigh to do the tabernacle service; 16. For I have chosen them instead of the first-born (to minister in holy things), 17. Which were mine: since I smote those of Egypt, both of man and of

beast, 18. I consecrated them for myself, the Lev ites for those of the Israelites; 19. And have given them as a donation to Aaron and his sons to do the Israelites' service at the tabernacle of the church, and to make atonement for the Israelites, that there be no plague among them, when they approach the sanctuary.

20. Now Moses and Aaron, and all the Israelites, did all that the Eternal commanded concerni ing the Levites. 21. And they being purified, and their clothes washed, were offered to the Eternal by Aaron, who made a purification atonement for them. 22. After which they went to do their service at the tabernacle, with the priests; as the Eternal com manded.

23. The Eternal said again to Moses, 24. The age of the Levites to wait upon the tabernacle ser. vice, shall be from twenty-five years old to fifty. 257 After which they shall do no burdensome service, 26. But minister with their brethren, in keeping the charge of the tabernacle.

CHAP. IX.

A SECOND PASSOVER IS AGAIN COMMANDED.

THE Eternal had spoken to Moses, in the wil derness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after coming out of Egypt, saying, 2. Let the Israelites keep the passover at the season appointed. 3. In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, according to all its statutes and ordinances.

4. And when Moses told them to keep it, 5. They did so; as the Eternal commanded.

6. But certain men who were defiled by the dead, so that they could not keep it on that day, came to Moses and Aaron, 7. And said, Wherefore are we kept back from offering an oblation to the Eternal among the Israelites at the season appointed?

8. Then Moses said, Stay, till I hear what the

Eternal will command concerning you in this matter. 9. Then he said to Moses, 10. Say to the Israelites, If any be unclean by a dead body, or be on a journey at a distance, 11. He shall keep the passover to the Eternal, on the same day of the second month, with unleavened bread, and bitter herbs, 12. Not breaking a bone of it, nor leaving any until the morning. 18. But he that is clean, and not on a journey, and neglecteth to keep it, shall be exterminated from his people; he shall bear the punishment of his iniquity, because he neglected the offering and service of the Eternal in the season appointed. 14. And if a stranger being a proselyte, sojourning among you, will keep the passover, he shall do it in the same manner as the native Israelites.

15. ¶ And on the day wherein the tabernacle or convention tent was reared up, the cloud of glory covered it; from evening to morning it had the appearance of fire over the tabernacle. 16. The cloud always covered it by day, which became bright like fire by night. 17. When it went up and moved before them, they journeyed, following it; and when it stood still, they remained in their tents.

18. Thus, according to the Eternal's will they journeyed or rested in their tents: 19. Even when it rested long, they kept the Eternal's charge abiding in their tents; 20. Whether for many days, or few; 21. Whether the cloud moved by day or night, they journeyed; 22. Whether it was a day or a month, or a year, that it rested on the tabernacle, they abode in their tents.

23. They did according to the Eternal's commands.

CHAP. X.

THE USE OF THE SILVER TRUMPETS.

THE Eternal said again to Moses, 2. Cause two trumpets of solid silver to be made, each of a whole

piece, to be used for assembling the people, and moving the camp to journey (also for festivals, sacrifices, and war). 3. When both are blown, all the congregation shall assemble to thee, at the tabernacle door. 4. If but one sound, only the heads of the tribes shall assemble. 5. When an alarm (quicker and longer) is sounded, the east part of the camp shall march. 6. When it is sounded twice, the south side of the camp shall take their journey, and so of the rest. 7. When the congregation is to be assem bled, ye shall only blow, but not sound an alarm. 8. They shall be blown by the inferior priests thro' all generations. 9. When ye go to war against an enemy, that intruding upon your land, oppresseth you, ye shall sound an alarm; and the Eternal your God will remember you, and save you from your enemies. 10. In your jovial festivals also, and stated solemn days, and on the first days of your months, ye shall blow the trumpets over your holocauts, and peace-offerings, that they may be for a memorial of you before your God, saith the Eternal, your God.

(The Eternal then said to Moses, You have been long beside this mountain, go by the Amorites' hillcountry, and the south and north places, hills or dales, to Canaan, Lebanon, and Euphrates, and possess the land I promised to your fore-fathers to give to their posterity. Deut. i. 6-9.)

11. On the twentieth day of the second month, of the second year, after their exit from Egypt, the cloud rose up from off the tabernacle, 12. And removed from the wilderness of Sinai, to that of Paran, where it rested, the Israelites having followed it. 13. And the journey was begun (according to the Eternal's command given to Moses), 14. By the standard of the tribe of Judah's camp first, with their armies; over which Nashon, Amminadab's son, presided. 15. Nathaneel, Zuar's son, presided over the host of Issachar's tribe. 16. Eliab, Helon's son, presided over Zebulon's tribe. 17. And the taber

nacle being taken down, was carried by the sons of Gershon and Merari. 18. Elizur, Shedeur's son, presided over the host of Reuben's tribe, with their standard, which went next. 19. Shelumiel, Zurisaddai's son, presided over the host of Simeon's tribe; 20. Eliasaph, Deuel's son, presided over the host of Gad's tribe. 21. Then went the Kohathites, carrying the parts of the sanctuary.

22. Elishama, Ammihud's son, presided over Ephraim's host, with their standard, which went next. 23. Gamaliel, Pedahzur's son, presided over the host of Manasseh's tribe; 24. Abidan, Gideoni's son, presided over the host of Benjamin's tribe.

25. The standard of Dan's camp was in the rear of all; over it presided Ahiezer, Amishaddai's son. 26. Pagiel, Ocran's son, presided over the host of Asher's tribe; 27. And Ahira, Enan's son, presid ed over the host of Naphthali's tribe (on the wings). 28. In this order the Israelites camps, and hosts, and standards, journeyed.

29. Then Moses said to Hobab, Reuel's son, the Midianite, his relation, We are going to the place which the Eternal promised to give us, come thou with us, and we will do thee good, for the Eternal hath promised good things to Israel. 30. But he answered, I will not go, but return to my country and kindred. 31. But he said, Leave us not I pray thee; for as thou knowest we are to encamp in the wilderness, thou mayest be to us instead of eyes to guide us: 32. And if thou wilt go with us, whatever good the Eternal doth to us, we will do the same to thee.

33. Then they departed from the Mount (Sinai) of the Eternal three days journey, during which the ark of the Eternal's covenant went before them, to find a resting place for them. 34. And the cloud of the Eternal was over them by day when they went out of the camp (to shade them from the heat).

35. And when the ark removed, Moses said, Á.
