THE FOURTH BOOK OF MOSES,

CALLED

NUMBERS.

[A History from 2d month of 2d year till 11th month of 40th.]

CHAP. I.

THE PEOPLE NUMBERED.

THE Eternal spake to Moses, in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the assembly, on the first day of the second month, of the second year, after their departure from Egypt, saying, 2. Number all the Israelites' names, by their families, and tribes, and their polls, 3. From twenty years old to fifty, all that are able to go to war, thou and Aaron; 4. And a man of every tribe, the chief of his pedigree, shall number them.

5. These are the men that shall assist you. Of Reuben's tribe, Elizur, Shedeur's son; 6. Of Simeon, Shelumiel, Zurishaddai's son; 7. Of Judah, Nahshon, Amminadab's son; 8. Of Issachar, Nathaniel, Zuar's son; 9. Of Zebulon, Eliab, Helon's son; 10. Of Joseph's offspring, of Ephraim, Elishama, Ammihud's son; of Manasseh, Gamaliel, Pedahzur's son; 11. Of Benjamin, Abidan, Gideoni's son; 12. Of Dan, Ahiezer, Ammishaddai's son; 13. Of Asher, Pagiel, Ocran's son; 14. Of Gad, Eliasaph, Deuel's son; 15. Of Naphthali, Ahira, Enan's son.

16. These were the chiefs of the national council, and chiefs of their father's tribes, heads of thousands in Israel.

17. Then Moses and Aaron took these men above mentioned; 18. And they assembled all the congregation, on the first day of the second month, and declared all their genealogies, by their families and tribes, giving their names, from twenty years old and upwards, by their poll. 19. Moses caused them be numbered in the wilderness of Sinai, as the Eternal commanded him.

20. Of Reuben's posterity. Israel's eldest son, 21. Were numbered, forty-six thousand and five hundred. 22, 23. Of Simeon's forty-nine thousand and three hundred. 24, 25. Of Gad's, forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 26, 27. Of Ju dah's, seventy-four thousand and six hundred. 28, 29. Of Issachar's, fifty-four thousand four hundred. 30, 31. Of Zebulon's, fifty-seven thousand four hun dred. 52. Of Joseph's, even of Ephraim's, 33. Forty thousand five hundred. 34, 35. And of Manasseh's, thirty-two thousand two hundred. 36, 37. Of Benjamin's, thirty-five thousand four hundred. 38, 39. Of Dan's, sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 40. Of Asher's, forty-one thousand five hundred. 41, 42, 43. Of Naphthali's, fifty-three thousand four hundred.

44, 45, 46. The sum of the whole in Israel able for war, being six hundred thousand, and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

47. The Levites only were not numbered; 48. As the Eternal said to Moses, 49. Thou shalt not number Levi's tribe among the rest, 50. But appoint them the charge of the tabernacle, and all that belongs to it, to carry and keep it, and do its service, and encamp around it. 51. They shall take it down, when it is to be carried forward; and shall set it up, when it is to be pitched: and if any not of the tribe of Levi approach it, he shall die. 52. And each of the Israelites shall pitch his tent by his own camp, and his own standard, by their tribes. 53. But the Levites shall pitch around the

tabernacle of the testimony, and keep the charge of ît, that there be no wrath against the congregation. 51. So the Israelites did all that the Eternal com. manded Moses.

CHAP. II.

THE ORDER OF THE TRIBES IN THEIR TENTS.

THE Eternal said also to Moses and Aaron, 2. Every man of the Israelites shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father's house, a round the tabernacle at a distance.

3. The standard of Judah's tribe shall pitch on the east, with their armies, and Nashon, Ammina dab's son, their captain. 4. The number of his host were seventy-four thousand and six hundred, as be fore mentioned. 5. Issachar's tribe shall pitch next to him; and Nathaneel, Zuar's son, their captain. 6, 7. Then Zebulon's tribe; and Eliab, Helon's son, their captain. 8, 9. All that were numbered in the camp of Judah (with Issachar and Zebulon), were an hundred and eighty-six thousand and four hundred by their armies: these go foremost.

10. On the south side shall be the standard of Reuben's camp, with their armies, and their captain, Elizur, Shedour's son. 11, 12. Simeon's tribe shall pitch by him; whose captain is Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai. 13, 14. And then Gad's tribe; and their captain Eliasaph, Reuel's son. 15, 16. All that were numbered in the camp of Reuben (with Simeon and Gad), were a hundred thousand, and fifty-one thousand four hundred and fifty, by their armies; they set out in the second rank.

17. Then the tabernacle of the assembly shall set out with the camp of the Levites (around it) in the midst of the other camps; as they encamp, so shall they set out, each in his place by their standards.

18. On the west side, the standard of Ephraim's camp, with their armies; their captain being Elisha

ma, Ammihud's son. 19, 20. And by him Manas. seh's tribe; whose captain being Gamaliel, Pedah zur's son. 21, 22. Then Benjamin's tribe; whose captain being Abidan, Gideoni's son. 28, 24. All that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim (with Manasseh and Benjamin), were an hundred thousand, and eight thousand and one hundred, by their armies: they set out in the third rank.

25. The standard of Dan's camp on the north side, with their armies; whose captain being Ahiezer, Amishaddai's son. 26, 27. And by him Asher's tribe; whose captain being Pagiel, Oeran's son. 28, 29. Then Naphthali's tribe; whose captain being Ahira, Enan's son. 30, 31. AH that were numbered in the camp of Dan (with Asher and Naphthali), were a hundred thousand, and fifty. seven thousand and six hundred. They marched in the rear with their standards.

32. All that were numbered in the camps by their hosts were six hundred thousand, and three thousand five hundred and fifty.

33. But the Levites went not to war, and were not numbered among them, as the Eternal commanded Moses.

34. Thus the Israelites did all as the Eternal commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they marched every one by their families, and the house of their fathers.

CHAP. II.

LEVI'S AND AARON'S RACE, Aand charge. MOSES and Aaron were of Levi's tribe. Their off spring, when the Eternal commanded Moses to number the other tribes at Mount Sinai, were these: 2. Aaron's sons were Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, 3. Who were anointed priests, consecrated to minister in that office.

4. Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire on the

Eternal's altar, in the wilderness of Sinai, and were consumed; they had no children. But Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office with Aaron their father.

5. The Eternal said to Moses, 6. Bring Levi's tribe, to present them before Aaron the priest, to assist him in the service of the church. 7. Serving him in the duties of his office, and they shall keep his charge, and that of the religious service of the whole congregation by the tabernacle, to do its service. 8. They shall keep all the utensils of the tabernacle. 9. The Levites shall be wholly given from among the tribes to Aaron and his sons for this purpose. 10. Aaron and his sons are to wait on the priest's office; and if any other come nigh he shall be put to death.

11. The Eternal said to Moses, 12. I have taken the Levites from among the tribes of Israel, instead of the first-born, to minister in holy things; 13. Therefore they are mine, because the first-born were mine since the day I saved them, when I smote all the Egyptians first-born, I consecrated and set apart for myself the first-born of man and beast, saith the Eternal.

14. The Eternal said to Moses, in the wilderness of Sinai, 15. Number every male of Levi's tribe, from a month old and upward. 16. And Moses did as the Eternal commanded him.

17. Levi's sons were, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 18. Gershon's sons, Libni, and Shemei. 19. Kohath's sons, Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 20. Merari's sons, Machli and Mushi.

21. The Gershonites' families were the Libnites and the Shemeites. 22. Their number was seven thousand and five hundred. 23. They pitch behind the tabernacle on the west.

24. The chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites, was Eliasaph, Lael's son.
