mourn for your sins, during the past year; and neither you, nor your strangers, shall do any work: 30. For on that day shall the high-priest make atonement for you (it is the great day of repentance and atonement yearly), that you may be cleansed from all your sins before the Eternal. 31. It shall be a great Sabbath to you, wherein ye shall humble and afflict your souls for your sins, every year. 32. And every anointed consecrated priest, that succeeds his father in his office, shall put on the linen clothes, the holy garments, and make the atone. ment, 33. Propitiating for the tabernacle, the sanc tuary, the altar, and for the priests, and all the people.

34. This shall be a perpetual ordinance to you, to make atonement for all the Israelites' sins, once a year. And the high-priest did as the Eternal com manded by Moses.

CHAP. XVII.

THE BLOOD OF BEASTS MUST BE OFFEred.

THEN the Eternal said to Moses, 2. Say to Aaron and his sons, and all the Israelites, The Eter nal hath commanded, 3. That if any Israelite or sojourner kill an ox, a lamb, or a goat, in the camp, or out of it, to sacrifice it, 4. And bring it not to the tabernacle door, to offer his sacrifice there to the Eternal; or any who kills such to eat, and brings not their blood to offer it before the Eternal at his altar, shall be punished as one having shed blood, and be exterminated from his people; 5. So that the Israelites may not offer their sacrifices in the open field, but bring them to the tabernacle door to the priest, and offer them for thank-offerings to the Eternal; 6. That the priest may sprinkle the blood on the Eternal's altar at the tabernacle door, and burn the fat for a sweet savour.

7. They shall no more offer their sacrifices to de

8. And if any among you, whether Israelite or a stranger, offer any sacrifice, 9. And bring it not to the tabernacle door, to offer it to the Eternal, he shall be exterminated from his people.

10. And if any, whether an Israelite or a strang. er, eat any blood, my wrath shall wax hot against that man, and cut him off from among his people: 11. For the life is in the blood, and I have appoint ed it to make atonement for your lives on the altar, for it is by blood that atonement is made for the soul, Acts xv. 29. Heb. ix. 22.

12. Therefore I said to the Israelites, None of you, nor any stranger among you, shall eat blood. 13. And whether an Israelite or a stranger among you, taketh any beast or fowl that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood, and cover it with dust; 14. For the life of every creature is in the blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.

15. Ye shall not eat what dieth of itself, or is torn of beasts (because the blood is in it); if any, whether an Israelite or a stranger, do so, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening; 16. Which if he do not, he shall bear his iniquity.

CHAP. XVIII.

22. Thou shalt not have connection with mankind as with woman-kind; it is an abomination. 23. Nor shall either man or woman have such connection with beasts; it is confusion.

24. Defile not yourselves by any such pollutions as the nations did which I cast out before cast out before you; be cause they did so, 25. And defiled my land; it loathes and vomits out its inhabitants; therefore do I punish them for their iniquities.

26. But ye shall observe my statutes and ordinances, that neither you nor your strangers among you do any such abominations, 27, 28. That it vomit not you out also. 29. For whoever do such abominations shall be cut off. 30. From all such customs shall ye abstain, and not defile yourselves; for I the Eternal am your God.
