very grievous hail, minged with fire, 25. Which smote all in the field, both man and beast, and every herb, and brake every tree. 26. But there was no hail in Goshen.

27. Then Pharaoh sent to call Moses and Aaron, and said, to them, I have sinned this time also; the Eternal is just, but I and my people are wicked. 28. Intreat the Eternal, that there be no more mighty thunderings, lightening, and hail; and I will let you go; ye shall stay no longer.

29. Then Moses said to him, As soon as I go out of the city, I will lift up my hands to the Eternal, and the thunder and the hail shall cease; that thou mayest know that the earth is the Eternal's. 30. But I know, that thou, and thy servants, though ye dreaded the Eternal, will yet sin. 31. The flax and barley was smitten; for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in the stalk. 32. But the wheat and the rye were not smitten; for they were not grown.

33. So Moses went out of the city, and prayed to the Eternal; then the thunder ceased, and no more hail and rain was poured out on the earth.

34, 35. But when Pharaoh and his servants saw that they ceased, they again hardened their hearts, and would not let the Israelites go.

CHAP. X.

LOCUSTS SENT.

THE Eternal said to Moses, I left Pharaoh and his servants to the hardness of their hearts; therefore I will shew my wonders among them; 2. That ye may relate to your children, and they to theirs, from age to age, what wonders I have done in Egypt; that they may know I am the Eternal.

3. Now Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, as the Eternal commanded them; and said to him, Thus saith the Eternal, the Hebrews God, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me?

Let my people go to serve me, 4. Else I will bring locusts to-morrow into thy land, 5. Which shall cover the face of the earth, so that one cannot see it: and they shall eat what the hail hath not destroyed; yea, every herb, and the fruit of every tree of the field. 6. And they shall fill thy houses, and those of thy servants, and of all the Egyptians; which thing neither thy fathers, nor their fathers, have seen, from the remotest age, till now. Then he turned, and went out from Pharaoh.

7. Now Pharaoh's servants said to him, How long shall we hurt ourselves, by injuring these men? Let them go, to serve the Eternal, their God; knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

8. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said to them, Go serve the Eternal, your God. But who are they that shall go? 9.Then Moses said, Both old and young, parents and children, cattle and flocks; for we must keep a festival to the Eternal.

10. But Pharaoh said, Neither is the Eternal with you, nor will I let your children go with you, for evil is before you. 11. Go ye that are men only, and serve the Eternal, as you desire. Then they were driven out from his presence.

12. Then the Eternal said to Moses, Stretch out thine hand, and the locusts shall cover Egypt, and eat every herb, and the fruit of every tree, even all that the hail hath left.

13. Then Moses stretched forth his rod, and the Eternal brought an east wind all that day and night; which brought locusts next morning over all the land. 14. They rested in all its borders: there there were none such before, nor shall any such be afterwards; 15. For they covered the whole land, so as to darken it; and they devoured every herb of the field, and all the fruit of the trees, which the hail had left; so that no green thing remained of herbs or trees through all the land.

16. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, I have sinned against the Eternal, your God, and you: 17. Forgive, I pray you, my sin only this time, and intreat the Eternal, your God, now only, that he may remove this calamity from me.

18. So he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the Eternal: 19. And he brought a very strong west wind, which removed all the locusts from the land, into the Weedy Sea.

20. But the Eternal left Pharaoh to the hardness of his heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.

21. Then the Eternal said to Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, and there shall be darkness over all Egypt so gross, that it may be felt.

22. Then Moses did so; and there was thick darkness over all Egypt three days; 23. So that none could stir out of his place, nor could they see one another. But there was light in Goshen.

24. Then Pharaoh called Moses, and said, Go and serve the Eternal, and take your children with you; let your flocks and herds only remain.

25. But Moses said, Thou must let us also take cattle, for sacrifices, and holocausts, to the Eternal, our God. 26. Therefore, our cattle also must all go with us; for we know not with what we must serve the Eternal, our God, till we come to the place appointed.

27. But the Eternal left Pharaoh to the hardness of his heart; so he would not let the people go. 28. But he said, Depart from me, and see my face no more, else thou shalt die. 29. And Moses said, According to thy word, I will see thy face no more of my own accord, after this time.

30. (The Eternal had said to Moses, I will bring yet one plague more on Pharaoh and Egypt; after which he will not only let you go, but hurry you away, with all ye have. 81. Tell the Israelites this, and both men and women will ask of their neigh

bours, golden and silver vessels, as their hire.

32. Then the Eternal made the Hebrews obtain the Egyptians favour. Moreover, Moses was very great in the esteem of all the people in Egypt.)

33, 34. Moses said (to Pharaoh), Thus saith the Eternal, about mid-night I will smite all the firstborn in Egypt, both of king, and people, man, and beast. 35. And there shall be a great cry through all Egypt; there was no such lamentation before it, nor shall be after it. 36. But no evil shall befal the Israelites, not a creature shall disquiet them; that it may be known that the Eternal makes a differ ence between them and the Egyptians.

37. (Then Moses said to Pharaoh, All thy servants shall come, and humbly intreat me, bowing" themselves, saying, Depart with all thy people; and then will I depart. Then he went out from Pharaoh, with great indignation).

CHAP. XI.

THE Eternal had said to Moses, Pharaoh will not hearken to you; so shall my wonders be multiplied in Egypt.

2. (Moses and Aaron having done all these wonders before Pharaoh, the Eternal left him to His hardness of heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his land).

3. The Eternal said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 4. This month, (Abib), shall be the chief of months, the first month of the year to you. 5. Tell all the Israelites that the head of every house shall take a lamb, on the tenth day of this month, for each family. 6. If the family be too little for the lamb, let it be for two: next neighbouring houses, according to the number of persons. 7. Let it be à male lamb, or a kid, a year old, without blemish. 8. And keep it till the fourteenth day of the month; and some in the name of the whole assemblies shall

kill it in the evening; 9. And sprinkle with its blood the posts on each side, and the lintel above the head of the door of the house, wherein they eat it. 10. They shall eat it in the evening, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 11. it must not be boiled, nor divided into parts, but roasted whole, and wholly eaten, even the head, legs, and carcase. 12. None of it ought to remain till the morning; if any of it do remain, it must be burnt. 18. ie shall eat it with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand, in haste; it is the Eternal's passover. 14. For he will pass pver you, in punishing Egypt, by smiting all the first-born, of both man and beast, and executing judgement on the gods of it. 15. And the blood on the lintel, and door-posts. of your houses, shall be a token to you, that your first-born shall not be destroyed, like those of Egypt; and that the plague shall pass by your houses, without entering them. 16. And this day shall be a memorial-day to you, to be kept a festival to the Eternal, in all ages, perpetually. 17. Ye shall eat unleavened bread seven days, and have no leaven in your houses. On the first day ye shall take away all the leaven out of them: whoever eats leavened bread, on any of these days, shall be excommunicated from Israel. 18. On the first day, there shall be an holy convocation; and also on the seventh no kind of work shall be done, except preparing necessary food. 19. You and your race shall observe the festival of unleavened bread, continually, because on the day of it ye were all delivered from Egypt. 20, 21. Ye shall eat unleavened bread, from the evening of the fourteenth dy of the first month, till the evening of the twenty-first day of it, by both Israelites and proselytes. 22, 23. This shall be observed in all your habitations.

24. Then Moses called all the elders of Israel,
