lency of the dignity of priest, and the power of prince of the family or tribe; 4. Which, like water spilt on the ground, thou hast lost, and fallen from thy dignity and excellency, by abusing thy youthful vigour, in defiling thy father's couch.

5. Simeon and Levi are brethren in iniquity and. cruelty. 6. Let not my soul come into their wicked councils, nor mine honour be united to their as-sembly; for in their rage they slew a prince, and in their self-will, they desolated a city. 7. Their anger is accursed, because it was fierce; and their. wrath, because it was cruel. I predict their being separated and dispersed among the other tribes of. Israel.

8. Judah, thou shalt be honoured and extolled by thy brethren; thou shalt be superior to thine enemies, 9. As a lion is to the other animals. 10. Judah shall continue a distinct tribe; having civil, and ecclesiastic power and authority, till Messiah come; to whose kingdom of peace, people of all nations shall flow. 11. He shall possess vines, and wine in such abundance, that he may bind his cattle to the vines, and wash his garments in wine, or dye them as scarlet, and crimson, in the blood of the grapes. 12. His eyes shall be ruddy with wine, and his teeth blanced with milk.

13. Zebulon shall dwell on the sea coasts, and be an haven of ships; Zidon shall be his border, (on the Mediterranean sea, and Tiberias eastward.)

14, 15. Issachar will yield to tribute, as a strong ass, under a load on each side, couching down for rest; which is good in the pleasant land.

16. Dan shall have the power of judgement, as the other tribes of Israel. 17. He shall be as a serpent by the way-side, as an adder in the paths, that biteth the horse's heels, to make his rider fall backward. 18. O Eternal! I have waited for thy salvation from such evils.

19. Gad shall be overcome by a troop; but he shall overcome at last.

20. Asher's land shall be fruitful, and yield royal dainties.

21. Naphthali is like a spreading tree, having beautiful branches.

22. Joseph is a prosperous son, like a fruitful. tree by a fountain well, whose branches extend o ver the wall. 23. His enemies shot at him, as the mark of their hatred, and sorely distressed him; 24. But his fortitude, and armour of defence, con- . tinued in strength, by the power of the mighty God of Jacob; thro' the name of the shepherd and support of Israel, 25. Through the God of his father, who assisted him, by the Almighty, who blesseth him with celestial and terrestial things, yea with abundant fruitfulness. 26. The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors, (in making all my sons partakers of the inheritance), the desireable things of the antient mountains, shall be on the head and the crown of him that was separated from his brethren, (by their envy).

27. Benjamin shall be to his enemies as a ravening wolf, to devour in the morning, and divide the spoil in the evening.

28. These twelve are all the tribes of Israel; and this is what their father spake to them, when he blessed them severally, with their peculiar blessings, predicting to them what should befal them.

29. Then he charged them, saying, As I am now. to be united to my fore-fathers, bury me with them, in the cave which is in the field of Ephron the Hittite; 30, 31. Of Machpelah, opposite to Mamre, in Canaan, which Abraham purchased from Heth's progeny for a burying-place. 32. He, and Sarah his wife, were buried there; and also Isaac, and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.

33. Now when Jacob finished giving commands

to his sons, he withdrew his feet into the bed, (on which he sat), and his spirit departed, and was associated with those of his ancestors.

CHAP. L.

JOSEPH fell on his father's face, and saluted him, and wept. 2. And he commanded the physicians of Egypt, his servants, to embalm his father. 3. And they did so, during forty days, according to the usual manner with those embalmed; then the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days: 4. Which being ended, Joseph said to Pharaoh's house, If I have obtained your favour, tell Pharaoh, I pray you, 5. That my father made me swear, to carry him to Canaan, and bury him with his fathers, in the grave he had digged for himself, that Pharaoh may suffer me to go, and I will come again.

6. Then Pharaoh said, Go, and bury thy father, as he made thee swear. 7. So Joseph went, accompanied with Pharaoh's servants, the elders of his house, and the elders of Egypt; 8. And Joseph's house, and his brethren, and his father's house, (they left only their families, and their flocks of cattle in Goshen), 9. And horsemen, and chariots; so there was a very large company.

10. And when they came to Goren-Ated, beyond Jordan, they mourned with a very great lamentation: Joseph mourned there for his father seven days. 11. And when the inhabitants, the Canaanites, saw the mourning of Goren-Ated, they said, This is a grievous mourning of the Egyptians; therefore that place was named, The mourning of the Egyptians.

12. Now Jacob's sons did to him as he commanded them: 13. For they carried him to Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah. 14. Then Joseph returned to Egypt, with his brethren, and all that accompanied him to bury his father.

15. Now Joseph's brethren, after their father's death, said, Joseph will persecute us, and certainly requite us all the evil we did to him. 16. So they sent messengers to him, saying, Thy father commanded us before he died, to speak thus to thee : 17. Forgive now, we pray thee, the trespass of thy brethren, and their crime, in the evil they did thee; we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father: He wept when they spake to him. 18. His brothers approached, and fell down before him, saying, Behold, we are thy servants. 19. But Joseph said to them, Fear not, for I will act the part of God to the penitent. 20. Ye indeed purposed evil against me, but God disposed it for good, to save many lives, and thus brought good out of evil. 21. Now therefore fear not; for I will nourish you, and your families. Thus he encouraged, and comforted them.

22. So Joseph and his father's house dwelt in Egypt: and he lived an hundred and ten years; 23. And saw Ephraim's children, being the third generation; and also the children of Machir, Manasseh's

son.

24. Then he said to his brethren, I am dyingbut God will surely visit you, to bring you from this fand, to the land concerning which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, (to give to their posterity): 25. Then he made Israel's offspring swear, that they would carry his bones thence, when God visited them to bring them back to their own land. 26. Then he died, being an hundred and ten years old, and was embalmed, and put in a coffin in Egypt, 1635.

CHAP. I.

A NEW KING IN EGYPT ENSLAVES THE HEBREWS. A. C. CIR. 1635.

THESE are the names of Israel's sons who came to Egypt with Jacob their father, each with his offspring; but the whole number of persons descended from Jacob, including Joseph and his sons, who were already in Egypt, were seventy. 2. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, 3. Issachar, Zebulon, Benjamin, 4. Dan, Naphthali, Gad, and Asher. 5, 6. Joseph, and all his brethren-even all that generation died.

7. Israel's posterity were prolific; they multiplied much, increased greatly, became mighty, and filled Goshen. 8. But a new king, (who was a foreigner), and knew not Joseph, ruled over Egypt. 9. And he said to his people, The Israelites are more and mightier than we; 10. Let us, therefore, wisely prevent their multiplying, lest if any war happen, they desert us, and join our enemies, to overcome us, or get out of the land.

11. Therefore task-masters were set over them, to oppress them with burdens. And they built the treasure cities Pithom, On, or Heliopolis, and Ra
