We daily break God's laws.

In what way do we break them?

By doing what they forbid; commission of sin.

By not doing what they enjoin; omission of duty.

What do you infer from this?

The necessity of repentance.

Quote Ezekiel xviii. 30-32.

"Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgres

Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed;

And make you a new heart and a new spirit ;

For why will ye die, O house of Israel.

For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God;

Wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye."

Mention two sorts of repentance.

Primary repentance; when we turn from sin to God and
His service.

What is Faith in Christ?

Receiving Him; trusting in Him.

What benefits do we then obtain from Him?

Life, salvation, all spiritual blessings.

Repeat the words of St. Paul. 1 Cor. vi. 11.

"But ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."

What shall we always feel as penitents?

Deep and unfeigned humility.

What shall we always feel as believers?
Gratitude, peace, and joy.

What does the whole of spiritual religion make us ?

Humble, holy, spiritually minded. Quote Romans viii. 6. Col. iii. 2.

"To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

"Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth."

Who produces this spiritual religion in the soul?

God the Holy Ghost.

Quote St. Paul's words, Rom. viii. 9.

"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his."

VI. PRACTICAL RELIGION.

What do you understand by Practical Piety?

Obedience to the laws of God.

What are we required to do?

To employ all our powers, time, and talents as God requires us to employ them.

Quote St. Paul's words, Rom. vi. 13.

"Yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God."

Describe Christian Duty in three words.

Sobriety, Righteousness, Godliness.

Prove this veiw to be Scriptural. Titus. ii. 12.

"Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world."

What do you mean by Sobriety?

Moderation in all things.

What does it especially describe ?

The duty of the Christian with regard to himself. What is it as to the body?

Temperance, chastity; just control of appetites and desires. What is it as to the mind?

Content with such things as we have.

Quote 1 Tim. vi. 6, and Heb. xiii. 5.

"But godliness with contentment is great gain ;"
"Be content with such things as ye have," &c.

Quote a passage which shows the sobriety of St. Paul. 1 Cor. ix. 27.

"But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection," &c.

What do you here mean by Righteousness?

The duty owing to other men.

What two words will describe that duty?
Justice and Benevolence.

To what does righteousness especially relate?

To our actions and words.

What are its objects?

Both the bodies and souls of men.

If we be righteous, what shall we be in our conduct?
Not only not doers of evil, but also doers of good.
What shall we remember when we think of time, money,
influence?

That we are God's stewards.

What does St. James say that "

What does the word Godliness describe?

The duty which I owe to God.

What is the inward duty which you owe to Him?

Remembrance, faith, fear, love, trust, resignation.

As to outward duty; how are you to regard His day-the

Sabbath?

To keep it holy.

How are you to regard His word-the Holy Scriptures?

I am to search them, meditate and delight in them.
How are you to regard public ordinances?

I am to worship God in them regularly.
What private service do you owe to God?
I am to pray to Him daily in private.
How are you to regard His commandments?
I am to observe and do them.

What is your great business in this world?

To serve God truly all the days of my life.

Describe briefly the whole life of the true Christian.

It is a life of faith and love; of holiness and obedience.

VII. RELIGION WITH ESPECIAL REFERENCE TO CHRIST.

Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith?

The Lord Jesus Christ.

What is He called in Malachi? iv. 2.

"The Sun of Righteousness."

Why is He so called?

Because He is the light and life of the world. State what may be called the two great facts of the Gospel. Christ died as a sacrifice for our sins:

He rose again for our justification.
What is the source of the Christian's life?

Christ is our life; we live by being in Him.
What is the sum of the Christian's excellence ?
It is to be like Christ; more and more so.
What is the fulness of his joy?
To be with Christ.

When are we true Christians?

When we rightly regard Christ.

When do we rightly regard Him?

When we know Him, believe in Him, love Him, and obey
Him.

Prove that we must know Him. Phil. iii. 8.

"Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord."

Prove that we must believe in Him. St. John iii. 36. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him."

Prove that we must love Him. Eph. vi. 24.

"Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ

in sincerity."

Prove that we must obey Him. St. John xv. 14.

"Ye are my

friends if ye

do whatsoever I command you."

Prove that we must follow Him. St. Matt. xvi. 24.

"If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."

Prove that we must copy his example. 1 John ii. 6.

"He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself so to walk, even as He walked."

Prove that we are to live to Him. Rom. xiv. 8.

"For whether we live, we live unto the Lord: and
whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we
live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's."

If we thus regard Christ, what is our spiritual state?
We are in Christ, and He is in us.

Quote St. John xv. 4.

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot

bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me."
