Section 710.-FENCE AND GUARD RAIL

710.01 Barbed Wire. Galvanized barbed wire of the coating class specified, shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A121. Aluminum coated barbed wire shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A585, with Type I (Aluminum Coated) or Type II (Aluminum Alloy) barbs at the option of the manufacturer.

710.02 Woven Wire. Galvanized woven wire fence of the coating class specified shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A116. Aluminum coated woven wire fence shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A584.

710.03 Chain Link Fence. Chain link fabric and the required fittings and hardware shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M181, for the kind of metal, coating, size of wire, and mesh specified. Galvanized coiled spring steel tension wire shall be 7 (.177'') gage, conforming to ASTM A641, hard temper, with Class 3 coating unless otherwise specified or shown on the drawings.

Aluminized coil spring steel tension wire shall also be 7 (.177) gauge, hard temper, having a minimum coating weight of .40 ounces per square foot of aluminum.

710.04 Metal Beam Rail. Steel rail elements shall be corrugated sheet steel beams conforming to the requirements of AASHTO M180 of the designated class and type.

710.05 Timber Rail, The timber rail shall be cut from the specified grade of dry, well seasoned and dressed timber stock of the species specified, which shall meet the applicable requirements of AASHTO M168.

Where preservative treatment is specified this shall conform to the requirements of subsection 716.03.

Rustic rails shall be straight, sound, and free of injurious defects and shall have been cut from live trees not less than 30 days but not more than 1 year before use. They shall have been stripped of bark before seasoning or shall have been stored under water. Immediately before the logs are used in the work all knots and projections shall be trimmed smooth and, if water cured, all bark shall be peeled. Slight curvature or "wind" to give a pleasing appearance to the structure will be permitted. Logs of only one species shall be used in the construction of any one continuous length of guardrail.

710.06 Fence Posts. Wood posts shall conform to the details and dimensions indicated on the plans. All wood posts shall be of sound, seasoned wood, peeled and with ends cut square or as indicated. The posts shall be straight and all knots trimmed flush with the surface. Where treated posts are called for, the kind and type of treatment shall conform to that indicated on the plans. When red cedar posts or bracing is furnished, the requirements for peeling may be omitted.

All dimension timber and lumber required for fences or gates shall be sound, straight and reasonably free from knots, splits and shakes. It shall be of the species and grades indicated on the plans and shall be dressed and finished on four sides.

Concrete posts shall be made of concrete conforming to section 602 for the class specified,

and shall contain steel reinforcement as shown on the plans, conforming to the requirements of section 709.

Steel posts for line-type fencing shall conform to ASTM A702.

Steel posts shall be galvanized in accordance with AASHTO M111 except that tubular steel posts shall be galvanized in accordance with ASTM A120. Fittings, hardware and other appurtenances not specifically covered by the plans and specifications, shall be galvanized in accordance with ASTM A120 and shall be standard commercial grade, and in accord with current standard practice.

Weathering steel posts conforming to the requirements of ASTM A558 shall be furnished when specified.

Aluminum alloy posts shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M181.

710.07 Guard Rail Posts. Guard rail posts shall conform to the applicable standards contained in AASHTO-AGC-ARTBA “A Guide to Standardized Highway Barrier Rail Hardware."

710.08 Guard Rail Hardware. Guard rail hardware shall conform to the applicable standards contained in AASHTO-AGC-ARTBA “A Guide to Standardized Highway Barrier Rail Hardware."

710.09 Box Beam Rail. Steel box beam rail elements shall conform to the applicable standards contained in AASHTO-AGC-ARTBA “A Guide to Standardized Highway Barrier Rail Hardware."

Section 711.-CONCRETE CURING MATERIALS AND

ADMIXTURES

711.01 Curing Materials. Curing materials shall conform to the following requirements as specified:

Burlap Cloth made from Jute or Kenaf.
Sheet Materials for Curing Concrete

Liquid Membrane-Forming Compounds for Curing
Concrete

AASHTO M 182

AASHTO M 171 (ASTM C 171)

AASHTO M 148 (ASTM C 309)

711.02 Air-Entraining Admixtures. Air entraining admixtures shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M154 (ASTM C-260).

711.03 Chemical Admixtures. Water-reducing, set-retarding, and set-accelerating admixtures, or combinations thereof, shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M194.

Section 712.-MISCELLANEOUS

712.01 Water. (a) Water used in mixing, curing, or other designated applications shall be reasonably clean and free of oil, salt, acid, alkali, sugar, vegetable, or other substance injurious to the finished product. Water will be tested in accordance with, and shall meet the suggested requirements of, AASHTO T26.

(b) Water known to be of potable quality may be used without test.

712.02 Calcium Chloride and Sodium Chloride. Calcium chloride shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M144 (ASTM D98) for the type specified in the bid schedule. Sodium chloride shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M143 (ASTM D632). 712.03 Hydrated Lime. Hydrated lime shall conform to the requirements of ASTM C207, Type N.

712.04 Stone Curbing.

(a) Stone curb.-The stone for the stone curb items shall conform to the size and shape specified and shall also conform to the following requirements:

Stone curb shall be approved limestone, sandstone or granite from acceptable sources. Stone shall be of the material indicated in the contract, or, if none is indicated, it may be any one of the three at the Contractor's option, provided that only one of the varieties of stone shall be supplied for the project. The exposed faces of stone curb shall be free from drill holes.

All vertical stone curb shall have a top surface sawed or pointed to an approximate true plane with no depression or projection on that surface of over 44-inch. The front and back arris lines shall be pitched straight and true. There shall be no projection or depression on the back surface which would exceed a batter of one inch horizontal on 3 inches vertical. The front exposed face vertical stone curb shall be sawed, pointed or smooth quarry split, as specified on the plans for the type specified, and shall be formed to an approximately true plane. The remaining face distance shall have no projections or depressions greater than one inch from the plane of the exposed face noted above.

The ends of vertical stone curb shall be square with the plans of the top, back and face, and so finished that when the sections are placed end to end as closely as possible, no space more than 2-inch shall show in the joint for the full width of the top surface and for the entire exposed front face. The remainder of the end may break back no more than 4 inches from the plane of the joint. The joints of circular or curved stone curb shall be cut on radial lines.

The minimum length of any segment of vertical stone curb shall be 4 feet unless otherwise noted on the plans. When required for driveways, crossings, closures or for other reasons, a depressed or modified section of curb is indicated on the plans or ordered by the Engineer, the Contractor shall furnish curbing with the required modification.

(b) Slope stone curb.-Unless otherwise indicated on the plans, slope stone curb shall conform to the requirements for stone curb except as follows:

The maximum allowable projection or depression on a horizontal top surface shall be 1⁄2 inch on other exposed faces the maximum allowable projection or depression shall be one inch.

For unexposed surfaces the maximum allowable projection or depression from a true plane on a 2-foot length shall be 3 inches.

The maximum allowable space showing on exposed faces between adjacent segments of slope stone curb shall be 34 inch.

The minimum length of any segment of slope stone curb shall be 2 feet. 712.05 Precast Concrete Curbing. Precast concrete curbing shall consist of precast portland cement concrete curb units constructed to the lengths, shapes, and other details shown on the plans. These units shall be reinforced with steel reinforcement when shown on the plans. Steel reinforcement shall conform to subsection 709.01. Concrete shall be class A(AE) conforming to section 552 unless otherwise shown on the plans.

When required for driveways, crossings, closures, or for other reasons, a depressed or modified section of curb is indicated on the plans or ordered by the Engineer, the Contractor shall furnish curbing with the required modification.

712.06 Precast Concrete Units. These units shall be cast in substantial permanent steel forms. Structural concrete used shall attain a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 3000 psi as determined in accordance with AASHTO T22 (ASTM C39). When air entrained concrete is specified, it shall have an air content of 6 percent plus or minus 2 percent by volume. The precast units shall be cured in accordance with AASHTO M170. Water absorption of individual cores taken from such units when tested in accordance with AASHTO T33 shall not

exceed 8 percent. Additional reinforcement shall be provided as necessary to provide for handling of the precast units.

A sufficient number of cylinders shall be cast from the concrete for each unit to permit compression tests at 7, 14 and 28 days, and to allow for at least 3 cylinders for each test. If the strength requirement is met at 7 or 14 days, the units will be certified for use 14 days from date of casting. If the strength requirement is not met at 28 days, all units made from that batch or load will be rejected.

Cracks in units, honey combed or patched areas in excess of 30 sq. in., excessive water absorption, and failure to meet strength requirements will be cause for rejection. Precast reinforced concrete manhole risers and tops shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M199.

712.07 Frames, Gratings, Covers, and Ladder Rungs. Metal units shall conform to the plan dimensions and to the following specification requirements for the designated materials. Metal gratings and covers which are to rest on frames shall bear on them evenly. They shall be assembled before shipment and so marked that the same pieces may be reassembled readily in the same position when installed. Inaccuracy of bearings shall be corrected by machining, if necessary. A frame and the grating or cover to be used with it shall constitute one pair.

All castings shall be uniformly coated with asphalt varnish meeting the requirements of Federal Specification TT-V-51.

Gray iron castings shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M105. Strength class will be optional unless otherwise designated.

Carbon-steel castings shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M103 (ASTM A27). Grade will be optional unless otherwise designated.

Structural steel shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M183 or ASTM A283, Grade D or better.

Galvanizing, where specified for these units, shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M111.

Malleable iron castings shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A47. Grade will be optional unless otherwise designated.

Aluminum alloy ladder rung material shall conform to the requirements of ASTM B221, alloy 6061-T6 or 6005-T5.

Aluminum castings shall conform to ASTM B26, Alloy 356.0-T6.

712.08 Corrugated Metal Units. The units shall conform to plan dimensions and the metal to AASHTO M36. Bituminous coating, when specified, shall conform to AASHTO M190, Type A, except that the Engineer may waive the imperviousness test if no separation of the coating from metal is observed. Polymer precoating shall conform to AASHTO M-245 for the type specified.

712.09 Linseed Oil.-This protective coating is intended for application to the surface of bridge decks, curbs, sidewalks, and concrete portions of bridge railings.

Boiled linseed oil shall conform to the requirements of Boiled Linseed Oil, Type I or Type II, ASTM D260.

Petroleum spirits shall conform to the requirements of Petroleum Spirits (Mineral Spirits), ASTM D235.

712.10 Plastic Filter Cloth. Plastic filter cloth shall consist of linear propylene, polyester or nylon woven into sheets of 20 to 30 mils thickness. The lengths and widths of sheets may be varied to suit the manufacturer's standards. Seams meeting strength requirements of the plastic filter cloth will be permitted.

Fibers of other composition or steel wire may be woven into the cloth for reinforcing purposes. The durability of these fibers must be equivalent to that of the plastic filter cloth.

A certified copy of permeability and filtration tests from a qualified laboratory showing the performance of this filter with fine sands and water stating both particle retention and permeability shall be included with a sample of the material. Sampling of the product shall be as follows:

(a) Qualification test sample shall consist of 2 square yards of material.

(b) Acceptance Sampling: The material shall be subject at all times to inspection at the places of manufacture, and every facility shall be afforded the Engineer's personnel in the prosecution of their work. Individual samples shall not be mixed. Samples shall be labeled with lot and batch number, date of sampling, contract number, and specifications.

712.11 Polyvinyl chloride and Polyethylene plastic Film. The film shall be either polyvinyl chloride plastic film meeting the requirements of ASTM D1593, Type II, or polyethylene plastic film meeting the requirements of ASTM D2103 (type 02000). The thickness shall be 6-8 mils.

712.12 Fly ash. Fly ash and raw or calcined pozzolans for use with Portland cement shall conform to the requirements of ASTM C618.

712.13 Materials for Gates. Materials for gates shall conform to FSS RR-F-191, Fencing, Wire and Post Metal.

712.14 The delineator reflector shall be either Type 1 or Type 2 as specified. The reflectors shall be either amber or crystal and shall be ready for mounting.

(a) Type 1 Reflectors: The reflector shall consist of an acrylic plastic lens with a smooth, clear and transparent face with a plastic back of the same material fused to the lens around the entire perimeter to form a homogenous unit, permanently sealed to prevent intrusion of dust, water or air. The lens shall have a reflective area of not less than 6.5 square inches. The rear surface of the lens shall provide reflectively by a prismatic configuration to effect total internal reflection of light.

(1) Seal Test-The following test shall be used to determine if a reflector is adequately sealed against dust, water or air.

Submerge 50 samples in water bath at room temperature. Subject the submerged samples to a vacuum of five inches gage for five minutes. Restore atmospheric pressure and leave samples submerged for five minutes, then remove and examine the samples for water intake. Failure of three or more of the 50 samples tested shall be cause for rejection of the entire lot. (2) Optical Requirements-The intensity of each reflector shall be equal to or exceed the following minimum values regardless of reflector orientation.

(3) Housing. The delineator element shall consist of a reflector element mounted in a housing fabricated of 0.063 inch 3003-H-14 or similar aluminum, or of heavy gage, cold rolled,
