material shall be placed and compacted in the bottom of the trench for its full width and length.

Perforated pipe shall normally be placed with the perforations down. The pipe sections shall be joined securely with the appropriate coupling fittings or bands.

Non-perforated pipe shall be laid with the bell end up-grade and with open joints wrapped with suitable material to permit entry of water, or unwrapped as may be specified. Upgrade end sections of all subdrainage pipe installations shall be closed with suitable plugs to prevent entry of soil materials.

After the pipe installation has been inspected and approved, granular backfill material shall be placed to a height of 12 inches above the top of pipe. Care shall be taken not to displace the pipe or the covering at open joints. The remainder of the granular backfill material shall then be placed and compacted in 6 inch maximum layers to the required height. Any remaining portion of trench above the granular backfill shall be filled with either granular or impervious material, as may be specified, and thoroughly compacted.

605.04 Underdrain Outlets. Trenches for underdrain outlets shall be excavated to the width and depth shown on the plans or as otherwise indicated. Pipe shall be laid in the trench with all ends firmly joined by the applicable methods and means. After inspection and approval of the pipe installation the trench shall be backfilled in accordance with subsection 603.08. Each outlet end of the subdrainage system shall be marked in accordance with plan details.

605.05 Storm Water Recharge Systems. Trenches for storm water recharge shall be excavated to the width and depth shown on the plans. The trench shall be filled with granular backfill material of the type and to the depth required by the plans. Perforated (360°) and non-perforated pipe shall be installed as required by the plans. Any remaining upper portion of the trench shall be filled with either granular or impervious material in accordance with subsection 603.08.

605.06 Waterproofing Trenches. The trench shall be graded to remove all bumps or depressions that may cause the film to be punctured. Care shall be taken to remove all sharp rocks, stones, roots and other sharp objects that may puncture the film. Placement of the film shall begin at the lower end of the installation.

The film shall be rolled out in place to cover the areas to be protected. The film shall be placed without stretching and shall lie smoothly in contact with the soil surface. Each strip of film shall be continuous in width with no joints. When end overlapping of strips is necessary, the joints shall be overlapped a minimum of two feet. End overlaps shall be made in the direction of flow. The film shall be covered and backfilled with the types of material shown on the plans.

Method of Measurement

605.07 Underdrains and outlets will be measured by the linear foot for pipe of the type and size specified. Storm Water Recharge Systems will be measured by the linear foot including all excavation and backfill material required in addition to the pipe as measured for underdrains.

Granular backfill material, when specified in the contract as a pay item will be measured in place by the cubic yard, completed and accepted. Cross sectional measurements will not exceed the neat dimensions shown on the plans or directed by the Engineer.

Excavation for underdrain pipe will be measured and paid for as provided in Section 206. Plastic film sheeting will be measured by the square yard, in place, completed and accepted. Measurement will be made on the ground surface, excluding overlaps. Filter cloth will be measured by the square yard in place and accepted.

Basis of Payment

605.08 The accepted quantities of pay items from the list below which appear in the bid schedule, determined as provided above, will be paid for at the contract unit prices therefor. Payment will be made under:

Section 606-GUARD RAIL AND CONCRETE WALL BARRIERS

Description

606.01 This work shall consist of the construction of guard rail in accordance with these specifications and in reasonably close conformity with the lines and grades shown on the plans or established by the Engineer.

The construction of the various systems of guard rail shall include the assembly and erection of all component parts and materials complete at the locations shown on the plans or as directed. Materials and construction requirements for MB5 and MB6 Guard Rail shall conform to the applicable provisions of Section 552.

Details for guard rail system components shall be as shown on the plans or in the special provisions.

Materials

606.02 Materials. Materials shall meet the requirements specified in the following subsections of Section 700-Materials:

Barrier grout shall consist of one part portland cement and three parts sand thoroughly mixed with water to produce a thick, creamy consistency.

Barrier hardware-Pins and dowels shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A36 and shall be galvanized in conformance with the requirements of ASTM A153.

Paint for field painting of guard rail shall conform to the AASHTO bridge specifications for the type and color specified in the contract. If not otherwise specified, the requirements for "Paint and Painting Metal Structures" of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges shall apply. Reflector tabs and hardware shall conform to the requirements shown in the contract.

Concrete for anchors shall meet the requirements of Section 602. Concrete for barriers shall be class A(AE) conforming to Section 552.

Construction Requirements

606.03 Posts. Posts shall be set plumb in hand or mechanically dug holes, unless driving is permitted. In the latter case the manner of driving shall be such as to avoid battering or distorting of posts. Post holes shall be backfilled with acceptable material placed in layers and thoroughly compacted. When it is necessary to cut post holes in existing paving, all loose material shall be removed and the paving replaced in kind.

606.04 Rail Elements. Rail elements shall be erected according to plan details and in a manner resulting in a smooth, continuous installation with laps in the direction of traffic flow. All bolts, except adjustment bolts, shall be drawn tight. Bolts shall be of sufficient length to extend beyond the nuts by more than one inch.

Where painting of railing components is specified, any damage to the shop coat of paint shall be corrected by an application of an approved rust-inhibitive primer prior to other painting. Ungalvanized surfaces inaccessible to painting after erection shall be field painted before erection. The railing components shall be given the specified number of coats of paint uniformly applied by thorough brushing or by approved pressure spray as specified.

Galvanized surfaces which have been abraded so that the base metal is exposed, threaded portions of all fittings and fasteners and cut ends of bolts shall be painted with two coats of zinc-dust, zinc-oxide paint conforming with Federal specification TT-P-641.

When concrete anchors are poured in place, the anchors shall not be connected to the guardrail until 7 days have elapsed from the time of curing concrete.

Rails on curves with a radius of 150 feet or less shall be shop bent.

606.05 Temporary or Permanent Concrete Wall Barriers.

(a) Wall barrier may be cast in place, precast, or slip formed. Temporary barriers may be incorporated in the permanent work provided they are not damaged and meet these specifications.

All work shall be done in accordance with the applicable sections of Section 552.
The barriers shall present a smooth uniform appearance in the final position.

(b) Finishing-The barrier top and sides shall be given a Class 1, ordinary surface finish and then given a spray finish in accordance with Section 552.

(c) Curing-The barriers shall be cured in a moist atmosphere a sufficient time to keep shrinkage cracks to a minimum and to assure specified strength.

Method of Measurement

606.06 Guard rail will be measured by the linear foot from center of end posts, except where end connections are made to masonry or steel structures, in which case measurement will be to the face of such structures. Double faced rail attached to the same post will be measured as a single unit.

End anchorages and terminal sections may be measured as units of each kind specified and installed, or they may be included in the quantities of guard rail of the respective type and not measured separately.

Concrete wall barrier will be measured by the linear foot to the nearest foot in accordance with Section 109.

Basis of Payment

606.07 The accepted quantities of guard rail will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for the type specified complete in place. When so specified, end anchorages and terminal sections will be paid for at the contract unit price per each of the kind specified complete in place.

The accepted quantities of Concrete Wall Barriers will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot complete in place.

Section 607.-FENCES, GATES, AND CATTLE GUARDS

Description

607.01 This work shall consist of the construction of fence, gates, and cattle guards in accordance with these specifications and the details shown on the plans and in reasonably close conformity with the lines and grades shown on the plans or established by the Engineer.

Materials

607.02 Materials. Materials for fences shall meet the requirements specified in the following subsections:

Materials for gates and cattle guards shall conform to the requirements shown in the contract. Concrete provided under this Section shall meet the requirements specified in Section 602 for cast-in-place concrete or 712.06 for precast units. Cattle guard units may be cast-in-place or precast as specified in the contract.

Construction Requirements

607.03 General. The Contractor shall perform such clearing and grubbing as may be necessary to construct the fence to the required grade and alignment.

At locations where breaks in a run of fencing are required, or at intersections with existing fences, appropriate adjustment in post spacing shall be made to conform to the requirements for the type of closure indicated.

When the plans require that posts, braces or anchors be imbedded in concrete, the Contractor shall install temporary guys, or braces as may be required to hold the posts in proper position until such time as the concrete has set sufficiently to hold the posts. Unless otherwise permitted, no materials shall be installed on posts or strain placed on guys and bracing set in concrete until seven days have elapsed from the time of placing of the concrete.

All posts shall be set vertically and to the required grade and alignment. Cutting of the tops of the posts will be allowed only with the approval of the Engineer and under the conditions specified by him.
