The issue by R. Grafton, dated 1547, fetched, 1857, at Sotheby's, £7. 10s. The present copy is marked higher on account of its finer condition. Lowndes ignores the issue of 1548. I have been unable to trace the sale of a copy. 1057 CERTAINE SERMONS or HOMILIES appoynted to be read in Churches, in

A very beautiful copy of a work in the Low Saxon dialect, unknown to most bibliographers. Hain cites a copy, wanting, as he states the two leaves of table; but which also wanted the Register that is to be found in this copy (misplaced between ff. 402-3), and the existence of which he was not aware of. He attributes the work to the concluding portion of the fifteenth century; but it is considered to be nearly thirty years earlier.

This enormous volume, filled with very curious wood-engravings, is, without contradiction, one of the most interesting monuments of Ancient German typography.

1087 PASSIONAEL. Hyr hevet syk an dat Passionael: Unde dat Levend der Hylghen unde to deme ersten dat Samer deel-In fine: Hyr endighet sik dat passionael efte der hyllighen levendt mit velen nyen merckliken historien, uth deme latine in dat dudesck ghebracht uñ ghedrukket dorch dat beveel un kunst Steffani Arndes inwaner un borgher der keyserlike stat Lubeck, int yar unses here MCCCCXCII up de dach sunte Elizabeth, stout folio, 418 leaves, with many quaint WOODCUTS, though rude, but very good impressions, most probably used here for the first time, all the cuts entirely free from color, singularly fine sound copy, calf, VERY RARE, £9. 9s Lübeck, Arnd, 1492

An early edition of the Passionale in Low German; for reviews see Panzer's Annalen, page 194; von Seelen Select. litterar. p. 632; Suhl's Verzeichniss, p. 55; Helmst. Biblioth. Bruns. Bietr. zur krit Bearb. p. 177; Goetze merkwürdigkeiten Band 2 p. 463.-Goetz ridicules the contents of this work, but he adds, that he must praise the Low German translator for occasionally doubting the truth of these stories. This edition contains several ORIGINAL Legends, extremely fabulous, not contained in the Latin and High German editions.

1088 PSALTERIUM, Latine, Incipit : [B] eatus vir qui nō abiit in cōsilio īpiorū. In fine, Finit psalteriù impressū per Fridericu Crewsner de Nurenberga, Laus deo Clementissimo, stout sm. 4to. 162 leaves, thick paper, bold gothic type, 19 lines to a full page, remarkably well preserved in the original impressed binding, the Virgin and child stamped in gold on the sides, with clasps, £8. 8s

ca. 1472

EXTREMELY RARE. The first letter illuminated in gold and colours, the other initials painted in, with the musical notes added in manuscript. Various prayers, Litanies, etc. in a handwriting of the 15th century are added on the fly-leaves at the commencement and the end. This copy agrees with Panzer's collation.

Priced, 1847, Thorpe, £10. 10s.

It seems to me doubtful, whether this volume was really printed at Nürnberg; the little variety of type used makes it appear rather to have been produced at some small monastery, "per F. Crewsner de Nurenberga."

1089 SUMMA JOHANNIS, FIRST EDITION, in Low German, sm. folio, very fine Lubek, S. Arndes, 1487

Bartold, sheets A-S (in 8 eight) T in 10 leaves "This version in the language of Lower Saxony is very rare and highly interesting in a philological point of view. "This Polyglot is of the utmost importance to a critic, not only on account of the extracts which it contains from a variety of important MSS., but particularly on account of the Oriental versions, from which he must collect various readings of the New Testament. Though several of the MSS. which are quoted in the Polyglot have since that time been more accurately collated, and no one would now have recourse to that edition for the reading of the Codex Alexandrinus or Cantabrigiensis; yet some of the MSS. which Usher had collected, have never since been examined, Mill and Wetstein have inserted those readings in their collections as they found them in the Polyglot. Now, as errors of the press are unavoidable, especially in a work like Wetstein's, it is necessary to have a recourse to the Polyglot whenever a doubt arises in regard to the accuracy of a quotation by Mill or Wetstein, in order to see whether these MSS. which were collated for the London Polyglot, have the readings in question or not." In this work it was Aelfric's object to furnish his countrymen with a translation of those parts of the Scripture only which he conceived to be most important for them to know; and in the execution of his purpose, although he has sometimes given an accurate verbal translation of the passages he has selected from Holy Writ, yet he has for the most part stated, in his own words, only the substance of the precepts inculcated, and the history recorded by the inspired penman.
