"A work of profound and various erudition, abounding with many new lights on the most curious and interesting subjects, filled with authentic testimonies which none but himself could bring to public view, and with many ingenious conjectures concerning the Theology, History, and learning of the Eastern Nations. This work has now become exceedingly scarce."-Chalmers. "Full of learned researches."Heeren.

879 WILSON (John) The PARSI RELIGION, as contained in the Zand-Avastá, and propounded and defended by the Zoroastrians of India and Persia, 8vo. cloth, RARE, 24s Bombay, 1843

This author, whose profound learning is everywhere apparent in his work, was drawn into a controversy with the educated native upholders of the ancient creed he wrote upon. He was thus necessitated to study his subject deeply; and to pass in review all that had already appeared concerning the Parsees. The Appendix contains Eastwick's translation concerning the Zartusht-Namah, the Sifat i Sirozah, etc.

883 LE POIS, Discours sur les Medailles et Graveures antiques, small 4to. fine portrait, numerous engravings of Medals and some large woodcuts, including one of Priapus on page 146, fine tall, copy, 20s Paris, 1579 884 POLIPHILI HYPNEROTOMACHIA, ubi humana omnia non nisi Somnium esse docet, atque obiter plurima scitu sane quam digna commemorat (per Franciscum Colonna), folio, 170 exquisitely beautiful woodcuts, none of which are mutilated, with the scarce leaf of "Errata," a very fine copy in calf extra, gilt edges, £15. 15s Venet. ALDUS, 1499 Priced, Payne and Foss, 1858, on paper, 247; fetched Sir M. Sykes', 217; Hibbert's, 177 15s. The extremely beautiful woodcuts, which adorn this very rare and desirable volume, are now generally attributed to Giovanni Bellino, the master of Titian and Giorgione. Formerly they were considered as the designs of RAPHAEL. The author has preserved his name in the first letter of each chapter which, being put together, form the line "Poliam frater Franciscus Columnas peramavit."

In this Hypnerotomachia he deplores the death or loss of his mistress. He was a Dominican at Venice, having entered that order soon after 1467, and died there, upwards of eighty years old, in July, 1525.

See Dibdin's Bibliotheca Spenceriana, iv. 145-65, where it is designated, "One of the most desirable volumes in the library of a collector, while it presents us with the most perfect specimen of the press of Aldus, and of the tastefulness of wood engraving in the fifteenth century."

885 POLIPHILE. "It is not generally known that Goujon re-drew the embellishments of Beroalde de Verville's translation of the Polifilo, and that these, beautiful as they are in the Aldine edition, acquired new grace from the French artist." Sir F. Palgrave, in Turner's Letters from Normandy, I. p. 201.

SERPENT WORSHIP: It is a singular fact that in the religions of almost all nations the form of the Serpent is found, as a symbol of Divinity, good or evil; even in that disputed point of Jewish and Christian doctrine,-the shape in which the tempter first appeared, popular belief has always inclined to the idea of the Serpent. This is a subject to employ the full powers of speculative thought.
