The sect of which the above are the Sacred Books has been known in the East under the various names of Nazareans, Mandaites, Christians of St. John, or Sabæans. Some assert that they are Christians; others the remains of the Hemerobaptists; and Norberg states that their religion is a medley of Chaldæism, Judæism, and Christianity. Others are of opinion that they are those so often alluded to in the Koran, as "the people of the book."-They are principally settled in the neighbourhood of Bussorah; in 1811 their number was about 5000, but in a state of rapid decrease. Their language is a dialect of the Chaldaic or Syriac. In the first part of the Liber Adami mention is made of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Solomon, John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ; of the destruction of Jerusalem; of the Christians;" of the Manichæans, Mahomet, the Sassanian dynasty of Persian kings, the conquest of Persia by the Arabs, &c. In the second, Mana, or the soul, sent by the Supreme Life to vivify and animate the body of Adam, speaks.

VII. The history of Abu al-Ghazi Sultan Husain Mirza, the fourth in descent from Timur; and VIII. Geographical description of the earth.

Mirkhond was born towards the close of A.H. 836 or the beginning of 837 (A.D. 1433). He devoted himself, early in life, to literary pursuits, but he never composed anything previously to his introduction to Mir 'Ali Shir, who immediately took him under his protection, and soon afterwards assigned him apartments in the Khankah Akhlasiyah, a building which the minister had erected to serve as a retreat and asylum to men distinguished by their attainments. A great portion of Mirkhond's work was written whilst he was on a bed of sickness, and he has himself given a painful account of his sufferings whilst engaged in completing his history. For a whole year before his death, which occurred in A.H. 903 (A.D. 1493) he gave himself up entirely to religious duties. 5926 TABAKAT-I-AKBARY: the Tables of Akbar, a general History of India to the reign of Akbar, by Khojah Nizámu-l-dín Ahmad Bakhshi, in Persian, sq. 8vo. neatly written MS. 110 pp. bd. 25s Saec. £3.

Saec. XVI Tabari was born A. H. 224, died A. H, 310. This Persian translation is considered more valuable than the Arabic original, from its numerous and curious additions. Tabari's work is the most accurate and judicious of all Oriental histories; the least disfigured with metaphorical exaggeration.
