"Some years ago the design of publishing Les Historiens des Gaules et de la France was resumed on a larger scale and in a more splendid form; and although the name of Dom Bouquet stands foremost, the merit must be shared amongst the veteran Benedictines of the Abbey of St. Germain des Prés at Paris. This noble collection may be proposed as a model for such national works; the original texts are corrected from the best manuscripts; the curious reader is enlightened without being oppressed by the perspicuous brevity of the preface and notes. But a multitude of obstacles and delays seem to have impeded the progress of the undertaking; and the historians of France had only attained the twelfth century and thirteenth volume, when a general deluge overwhelmed the country and its ancient inhabitants."-Gibbon's Miscellaneous Works, vol. 2, p. 713.

The tables of contents and the index are framed with so much minuteness as to bring, in a few minutes, before the reader's eye, all that can be found respecting any fact within the period of the collection, and the dissertations are so copious and ably executed, that there seldom is a point of importance where the writers have not collected the learning and sentiments of all preceding writers. Dom Bouquet lived to finish the first eight volumes; on his decease, the work was put into the hands of Dom Haudiquier, who had, in Dom Bouquet's life-time, learned the Arabic language, to enable him to print, with a translation, the authors who have written in that language upon the Crusades. Both writers were Benedictine monks of St. Maur; and invaluable as the work is, it is by no means the only work of the same calibre for which we are indebted to that learned community."-Works of C. Butler, vol. 2, p. 5. (Appendix).

Bouquet is a name better known to the continental historian than any other compiler and editor, and indeed almost every one who has studied the earlier portions of English history, must be familiar with the sound. This Benedictine was commissioned by his order to draw up one of those immense works which, from time to time, have been the peculiar boast of the French literary world and to which we have nothing to compare in our country. It was considered desirable that all the ancient and medieval writers upon the history of France should be collected into one immense corpus historicum for the good of the nation.”—H. L.
