lections, numbering more than 6,164,000 books
and pamphlets, and of the microfilm collection
containing 92,000 reels and 154,000 other micro-
copy items; supervising use of special service
to readers in the main and Thomas Jefferson
reading rooms 78 hours a week; and 40 hours a
week in the microfilm reading room.
Custody and service of the collection of serial
materials, including unbound periodicals and
Government documents, and bound and un-
bound newspapers totaling over 5,800,000
items; collates and prepares separate issues for
binding; services three reading rooms-periodi-

strengthen the collections relating to these
areas; responsible for custody, organization,
and service of unprocessed Slavic and East
European serial publications, and for reader
and reference services in the Slavic room for

Responsible for administration, planning, policy
formulation and recommendations, and for
direction and coordination of all of the divi-
sions of the Department listed above. Also
directs the following activities: 2 divisions
financed by the National Defense Establish-
ment; bibliographical work supported by
other executive agencies; the Division for the
Blind; the preservation of early American
motion pictures; organizing and microfilming
the papers of the Presidents; and numerous
special activities financed by gift and trust
funds. These activities occupy over 550 em-
ployees in addition to the 404 employees in
budgeted positions.

Responsible for administration, planning, policy formulation, and
for direction and coordination of the acquisitions, maintenance,
reference and research, and other activities of the American-
British, European, Far Eastern, Hispanic, and Near Eastern and
North African Law Divisions; and the activities of the Office of
