DIDS BEYOND FY 1972 The prototype transmission facility will provide service to ten central east coast states. Two additional Distribution facilities could provide service to 12 additional States in the south-east and central parts of the United States in FY 1973. Additional Distribution facilities could provide coverage to the remaining contiguous States of the U. S. in the period FY 1974 through FY 1977. Completion of the Control subsystems and facilities for Alaska and Hawaii could be accomplished by FY 1979. When fully deployed DIDS would provide service to over 96% of the people, through 40,000 voice, teletypewriter, and siren activator terminals. Additional receiving terminals could be added where needed without change in the basic Distribution System. Estimated total system investment cost is $49 million. Because the basic DIDS transmission and distribution service covers the 48 contiguous States, Direct indoor home warning to the public could be added once DIDS is operational. OCD Use of civil defense home warning systems in natural disasters and other peacetime emergencies is under study by a Federal interagency committee. |
