Unlike the usual tiny apartments most budding physicians have to put up with, you should be able to afford a home with more space to move around in. And if you live in government housing, it won't cost a fortune either. You should find schools nearby with qualified teachers, and classmates who are your children's friends and neighbors and whose parents are your friends and neighbors.

Life in the Navy is special. That's why I decided to join, and why I think every young doctor should seriously consider the Navy Medical Corps.

However, I should point out that the Navy is for those who have what it takes to get ahead. You will be expected to provide the best possible medical care to the Navy's operating forces. There will be some weekend and night duty and possibly service in out-of-the-way places at times. Your work will be demanding but the rewards and satisfactions are great if you've got what it takes.

Please remember that in life-civilian or militaryphysicians frequently have to face challenges and perform difficult tasks. And we're all subject to the standards of hospitals, medical societies, and society in general. In these areas, the Navy is similar to civilian life. What makes it more rewarding, in my opinion, are some of the features I've discussed in this booklet.

I hope I've given you some food for thought.
